What is this game?
Super Robot Wars K (SRW K) is a turn-based strategy RPG for the Nintendo DS that came out only in Japan on March 20th, 2009. The K stands for Key or Krystal. This will be a fun party.

What series are in this game?
There are quite a few series that are in this game and some of them even feature their own plots that intertwine together in interesting ways. Other series’ plots have already happened and they’re just sticking around to help.

This will be my fourth screenshot LP, having already done SRWs R, D, and BX. Posts will be accompanied by the raw, unedited video footage of my gameplay, for better or for worse, and a link to a version of the same chapter in the test poster, which is for archival purposes. Do not expect perfect gameplay or playing animations for every attack. Even though this game lacks any sort of voice acting, I will point out the voice actors for the characters who appear, should they have one.

Barring any direct questions in the LP thread, I’m not going to go too in-depth into the game mechanics. The primary focus for this LP is to deliver the story to an English reading audience.

This game has multiple endings, all focused on how many points you give to either of the game’s two female leads. I’ll do my best to cover as much of that as possible. This game also has many mutually exclusive secrets, requiring you play through the game multiple times, each runthrough focusing on one of three game-long secrets. In the end, I will have three save files, each for these secrets, and compile them into each chapter while pointing out the differences. There’s also two different heroines for our main character to choose between, which also changes up the endings. If you’re curious, these save files will be Angelica/SEED/Zoids, Sheldia/Fafner/Gun X Sword, and one focused on a character named Ken. If none of this makes sense now, it will later.

This game’s story has a bad reputation and I think it’s worth finding out why instead of being told about it second hand. The gameplay isn’t as polished as L, UX, or BX (made by the same team), but it’s still plenty playable.

Things in brackets [] are stage directions. Things in parentheses () are either what I listed above, or note from me, your TL.

Super Robot Wars K - Over The Earth


We begin by choosing the names of our main character (Mist Rex), and his robot (Revrius). You can name them whatever you want in Hiragana, Katakana, and English characters, but I’m sticking with the defaults.


Next, you need to choose your three favorite series. All units from the chosen series will get 15 upgrade points in each stat (as opposed to the normal 10) and an increase to earned EXP and money (these differ from series to series, with series with less units having a greater multiplier). For my purposes, my chosen series are Original, Gundam SEED series, and Gun X Sword. It’s worth noting that “Gundam SEED Series” means both SEED Destiny and Stargazer. I chose Original since Mist is the main character and will always be both strong and available. The latter two were pillars of my casual run a few years ago.

About 100 years ago, the “Stellar Era” was established as the new calendar system…
The development of human civilization has rapidly advanced in this first century. It’s now possible for humans to live in space colonies, and everyone has high hopes for the future of Earth.

However, Earth was caught up in a never-ending vortex of war.

50 years ago, the “Great Jama Kingdom,” led by Queen Himika, emerged. A decade ago, the “Mimetic Beasts” invaded, after humanity had been warned of their existence by Dr. Tatsuya Aoi. Those attacks, accompanied by mysterious kidnappings, were enough to instill fear and suspicion in humanity. Over the past few decades, the conflict between “Coordinators”, those with superior abilities due to genetic manipulation, and “Naturals”, normal humans, has also reached a level that cannot be ignored by society.

In the battle 50 years ago, a barrier called “The Zone” suddenly appeared, causing both the entire island of Kyushu and the Jama Kingdom to be sealed away. The Mimetic Beasts were finally annihilated during the “Titan War” five years ago. Cities were rebuilt and peace has returned to the world.

However, behind the scenes, the already tense relationship between “Naturals” and “Coordinators” had deteriorated to the point of imminent conflict. War broke out between the Earth Alliance and ZAFT. Furthermore, the evil scientist Dr. Hell, who was secretly preparing for world domination, also began to make his move. The world was at war once more for nearly two years until their leaders were defeated.

Now, in the year 105 of the Stellar Era, six months have passed since the end of the wars… While the scars have yet to heal, humanity cherishes and savors the peace they’ve finally achieved… Unaware that a new terror is approaching right before their eyes…

A decently powerful sniper-type unit. The biggest issue is that Kouji, its pilot, has awful aim. He doesn’t even get the Aim Spirit until level 36! You can use G-Gunner as a supporter for the accuracy bonus, but otherwise you should give it accuracy boosting parts or invest in its accuracy stat.

On the left screen (top DS screen), you can see the pilot and their stats. The robot is on the left/bottom screen.

It’s worth noting that G-Gunner in this stage has Shizuru as a co-pilot. That doesn’t extend beyond this stage.

The first objective is to defeat Mimetic Beast No. 12. The Mimetic Beast is in the water, but G-Gunner sucks at aquatic combat. Move him onto the better terrain on the cliff and let it come to you. Mimetic Beasts also have barriers, so watch out for that.

How did Club Mariner turn into a Mimetic Beast!? That should be impossible!

It’s worth noting here that this game has a reputation for plagiarized music. The map BGM for this stage, which you can hear here is extremely similar to Orc 2 from Warcraft II. This track was also used in Super Robot Wars W as well. There are two other plagiarized tracks in this game, which I’ll point out when they show up.

A melee fighter who can only do his job when in someone’s face. Get in close and use his very cheap attacks, but he’ll be easily outranged by most enemies in the game.

Less powerful than Godannar, but it has a defensive barrier which will reduce all incoming damage. This makes it much tankier once you start getting Anna’s morale up.

[Mazinger Z]
A SRW staple. Mazinger is bulky, but slow and extremely EN reliant. Its main feature for the early stages of the game is that its Rust Hurricane attack can reduce the enemy’s armor by quite a bit, which is essential for bosses. Just watch its EN usage, since the game will like to default to the 50 EN using Breast Fire when the enemy is in range.

Whether they’re Kikaijus or Mimetic Beasts, they’re no match for the Mazinger my grandpa created!


[Diana A]
Diana A is not meant to be used for combat. It’s a repair bot, meaning it can use its action to restore an adjacent unit’s HP. Out of the game’s repair bots, Diana A lacks the bulk to survive more than a few attacks. Sayaka, on the other hand, has great support Spirits such as Fortune and Trust.

How dare you interrupt their wedding, you insensitive Mimetic Beast! I’ll never forgive you!

It’s worth noting that, being a repair unit, its pair partner will get an innate 10% HP regen every turn. I’ll go over that in more detail in a few chapters when the game talks about the Pair Up system.

Have everyone retreat to the cliffs and land Mazinger. All of our units suck at fighting units in the water, so we want to lure them onto land, where we can deal actual damage.

Now’s a good time to recognize what this game’s combat is trying to do. The game doesn’t want you to use your finishers all willy-nilly. That much is obvious by Mazinger Z’s Breast Fire using almost a third of its starting EN. You’re to use your weaker attacks on normal enemies and save your big finishers for bosses. And even then, don’t be afraid to chip bosses down with the weaker attacks. EN is a premium in this game, so you’ll need to watch how you attack and counterattack.

Anyway, the next plot event happens either at the start of turn 6 or when all enemies are destroyed. For me, it was the former.

The main character. The Revrius is fast, strong, and has cheap attacks at both close and long range. Its biggest weakness is that it can’t take many attacks. It’ll be with you the entire game, so it’s definitely worth investing in.

I never want to lose a friend in front of me ever again! Let’s go, Revrius! We’ll fight once more for everyone’s sake!

As mentioned, this game has a combo attack system that you can only do while a unit is solo, the pilot has the Combo skill, and you use an attack with the “C” tag. This won’t be available to use until much later in the game, but the game will be partially focused around exploiting this mechanic.

Have Mist rejoin the group by the cliffs and start taking out the enemies.

The first chapter is over when all enemies have been defeated.

Ground floor on another SRW LP! Time for the most... decisive game, I think. Plagirized music, Rex, new gameplay features that don't get fixed until the next game, Rex, no UC Gundams, Getter Robo, or even Great Mazinger, and have I mentioned Rex already? Still, I'm going to enjoy reading this, because I've never played more than the first stage. Keep it up!

Also, I believe Crimson Battlefield A-11 was ripped straight from Space Sheriff Gavan. It was the Laser Blade theme.

Ah yes, the game that very noticeably cribbed music from SFC RPGs and gave us... this protagonist, who has a theme that's honestly too good for him.

Then again I am 99.9% certain W started it with cribbing that one track from Warcraft 2.

(I don't actually have much to say about this game, it was fun at the time but doesn't really hold up under any stricter standard, and while I recall the overall writing quality being regarded as a letdown even at the time IIRC it was more boring and inconsistant than offensively awful.)

Here’s the intermission menu. On the left/top screen, you can see the top three characters in terms of kills. On the right/bottom screen, you’ll see the menu itself.

Under PILOT, we’ve got “View pilot stats”, “Skill Parts”, and “Transfer”. They are pretty self explanatory. Throughout the game, you’ll get skill parts, which can teach various skills to your pilot. There’s nothing worth using quite yet. “Transfer” is for when you get units who can swap between machines of the same series. This won’t really matter unless you want to move Boss into Mazinger Z, or when we get SEED Destiny units.

Under MACHINE, we’ve got “View machine stats”, “Equip parts”, “Upgrade units”, and “PU Setup”. Like skill parts, we’ll get parts that you can equip to the mechs to increase their stats. Under “Upgrade units”, you can spend money to increase a mech’s stats for the rest of the game. PU is short for Pair Up, and we won’t be using that for a while. In essence, much like Super Robot Wars L, UX, and BX, you can have two units team up to form a single unit. There are benefits and negatives to doing this, but the game will go over that in a few chapters.

Under SYSTEM, we’ve got “Library”, “Shop”, “System”, “Data Save”, and “Next Map”. Under “Library”, you can view information regarding Spirits and Skills. In the shop, you can sell skill and mech parts for more money, if you really want to. System lets you change system settings. Data Save will let you save the game. And “Next Map” is self-explanatory.

My best advice for this game is to dump all your money into increasing either EN and/or attack power, primarily in your main character Super Robots like Mazinger and Godannar. Investing into Revrius is always a good idea too.

Last time, Mimetic Beasts attacked Dannar Base. Mist, who’s pretending he has amnesia, saved the day along with Koji, Sayaka, Goh, and Anna.

A lightly armored unit with a long ranged sniping attack and a 1 range finisher. A great offensive-based pair partner for most units.


[Godannar (TDM)]
TDM stands for Twin Drive Mode. Goh’s Godannar and Anna’s Neo Okusaer can combine into the orange Godannar when they both hit 110 morale and are adjacent/diagonal to each other. It’s a straight upgrade over the base Godannar, but by extension, it’s more of an EN guzzler. In this game, you can decombine and recombine at any time, so take advantage of that whether you need power or more bodies.


[Boss Borot]
It’s a resupply unit that struggles at hitting units in the air. It’s extremely slow, but doesn’t have the armor or HP to let it survive more than two attacks. However, it does have three pilots, and Nuke and Mucha follow Boss if you were to, say, put him in Mazinger or Diana…

The objective of this map is to defeat Suspage without letting anyone die. Use the buildings as cover (read: terrain bonuses) as you face the Darius Army. I don’t have a way to inspect units yet, so please bear with me. Suspage is in a battleship, the Zelgaia, that has high firepower and armor. Get in close where he can only use weaker attacks.

There’s a plot event at the start of turn 2.

Your main battleship for most of the game. Its normal mode is good for movement, but its Volution Protect Mode is better suited for combat, as it gives increased defense and a barrier.

Sending in both Demonic and Iron Beasts at the same time… It seems they’re finally invading the surface in earnest. But this Daiku-Maryu will use all its power to stop the Darius Army’s ambitions!

Anyway, just keep doing what you’ve been doing. Move the Daiku-Maryu to the east and await the next plot event at the start of the next turn.

A very powerful but EN inefficient Super Robot. Make sure you pair him with a resupply bot, otherwise you run a very real risk of running out of EN. Try to max out his EN as soon as possible. Beyond that, Gaiking has a wide variety of attacks at multiple different ranges and the bulk to take a lot of attacks.

I’ve waited five years for this day! I’ll defeat you and get Dad back!


When you deploy Gaiking, the Daiku-Maryu loses the skull head, which slightly lowers its stats. It also reverts back if you put Gaiking inside of a battleship. It’s barely enough to matter, but worth pointing out. 99% of the time, you’re better off using Gaiking and dealing with this slight decrease.

Start kicking some ass. The next plot event happens when either Suspage hits 30% HP or all enemies except Suspage are defeated. For me, it was the latter.

A long ranged sniper that can fly, but functions even better underwater. It’s also a resupply bot, which you can never have too many of. Try not to partner him with a land-locked unit, as his ground rank kinda sucks.

[Crab Bunker]
A mid-to-close range tank that functions best when in water. Outside of water, it’s just okay. It’s also a resupplier with three pilots. Did Boss Borot just get power crept?

They always call us the three idiots, or that we’re three parts of the same moron, but we can pull through when we need to!
I’ll show you we can fight just as well as Gaiking!

All that’s left is defeating these Mimetic Beasts. They’re just like they were in the previous stage, but now there’s more of us. Chances are the main group is far behind, so use the river as cover and hold the line until the main group can join this new front. Crab Bunker and Serpent will only take 10 damage if you put them in the water, so take full advantage of that.

Goh has a line when fighting these Mimetic Beasts.

They just keep coming! It’s like they’re celebrating my return to active duty!

That’s the name of a hole in space opened by the Darius Army. They use that hole to send forces from Darius to the surface.

One of the speediest and dodgiest members of the roster due to his small size. He burns through EN like it’s paper and can’t survive more than two hits, but holy cow does he deal insane amounts of damage. Keep him close to or partnered with Big Shooter (New). Jeeg requires investment into its EN, since as it is now, it can’t even use its finisher when it unlocks later in the game. That S rank on ground is no joke either.

I have no idea what’s happening, but right now, all I have to do is defeat this Haniwa Genjin monster, right? Just watch. I’m gonna go wild!


[Big Shooter (New)]
Jeeg’s dedicated partner. It’s bad in combat, but it has a resupply module, which provides the EN regen that Jeeg craves, and later in the game Jeeg and the Shooter (New) will get several team attacks. The main issue is that, since the partner takes the terrain of the lead unit, you either need to give Jeeg a part to make it fly, or you give the Shooter (New) a part that’ll let it perform better on the ground. The latter becomes available during this stage.

Kenji… I won’t let you fight alone. I’ll fight with this Big Shooter!

Think of the Big Shooter (New), but a little stronger in combat, no team attacks, and a repair module instead of resupply. Very similar to the Stinger, but a tad bit more combat focused.

In terms of party composition, I just split up Rex and Angelica so they’re both solo. Only Jeeg and Big Shooter (New) are paired up, with the latter having a part equipped to give it an A rank on land. Starting in the next chapter, I’ll go more in-depth into who I’m using, who I’m pairing up, and who I’m keeping solo. Mandatory deployments for this chapter are Mist, Angelica, Puria, and Kouji.

Well, if you’re going to mass-produce something, it makes sense to try and improve its efficiency… What do you mean by “Angelica’s Selius”?
My Selius is a custom job. Beyond basic modifications, the biggest change was switching the power reactor to a semi-perpetual motion engine. Otherwise, its power is roughly the same.
I see… I wish Mazinger’s maintenance was a little easier. It’s overdue for an overhaul anyway…
Does it really need such extensive maintenance??
After defeating Dr. Hell, I’ve been too busy to have a chance to properly maintain it. The Super Alloy Z’s service life is reaching its limit, not to mention its output has dropped considerably.
It’s a shame Dannar Base’s mechanics couldn’t fix that issue.

The Revrius is supposedly a reproduction of data from a mobile weapon that was excavated from an ancient ruin. There is a mass-produced version that’s standard issue to the Defense Force, but the design isn’t original. Because of that, the maintenance procedures are completely different from the norm, so I have to learn as I go. Also, like Angelica’s, it has a different power source than the mass-produced version.
Hold up. Ruins containing data on mobile weapons? And you mass-produced them? Can you explain it step-by-step?
I don’t know the details, but it seems the ancient Atreemians sealed away their advanced technology at some point. The ruins were discovered relatively recently. The technology back then and the current technology are so similar that our engineers were actually disappointed. That said, these ruins were about 2000 years old.
Apparently, data on two types of mobile weapons were discovered in those ruins. The Revrius is a reproduction of one of those weapons.
What about the other one?
Analyzing that data was difficult, and we were in the middle of figuring it out. If we were able to finish it, a mobile weapon with a similar concept to the Selius would have been made. It seems that both this theoretical unit and the Revrius worked well together.
I was surprised at first that Atreem Defense Force had mechs that were sourced from those ruins. The imperfect replicas were adapted for mass-production and used as their main fighting force.
It’s amazing that they deployed those…
The technology they discovered was about equal to what they already had, so they didn’t run into any problems during the testing phase… But that was all before I joined, so this is all second-hand information.
You said earlier that both yours and Angelica’s mechs had their power source changed from the mass-produced versions. Is this an experimental engine they were testing?
We don’t know. We weren’t properly briefed on the change before we went out on our last mission.

Another extremely agile unit thanks to its small size, an S rank in air, bushin, damage reducing barrier, Overskill and Gainer’s Game Champ skills. With some investment, King Gainer can solo entire armies. It does have limited ammo for its non-1 range attacks until it gets more attacks later in the game, so make sure you don’t run out too quickly.

[Gatchiko]
A sniper unit with an extremely powerful “Black Southern Cross” attack that can outrange most enemies. However, it will die in an attack or two. Keep it in the rear and snipe bosses, since its other attacks will put it in danger due to their low range.


[Panther]
You get three of these (Sara, Gauli, Bello) and all three machines are the exact same. They’re weak repair bots whose attacks can inflict some useful debuffs like Aim Down or Mobility Down. They also have a powerful three-man team attack with each other which only costs 10 EN. However, you do end up losing two of the Panthers for most of the game.

Adette is a freebie in a mere Silhouette Engine, but make sure you watch those hit rates. Brunhilde is tough, mean, and has a stronger barrier than the other Overmen.

Probably one of the best and EN efficient melee brawlers in the game, outside of extremely costly finishers. The damage Dann can deal is insane, especially with its late game upgrade. Once Van gets the Attack Combo skill, you’ll want to keep him solo to instantly delete entire pairs at once with his Machete attack. As you’d expect, Dann’s biggest weakness is a lack of long ranged attacks, so expect to get outranged a lot. Like most other mechs in this game, you’ll want to max out his EN and attack power. It’s not bad to give him range-extending parts. Also, if you want to use Van, dump as many Infighting skill parts into him as possible.

You’ve pissed me off… I’ll cut down every last one of you, so prepare yourself!

I also want to briefly talk about unique skills that a few pilots in this game have. Gainer has the Gamer skill, which increases his skill stat by 10 when he reaches 130 morale. This is increased to Game Champ when he gets 100 kills, which increases his skill stat by 20. This is further increased to Game King when he gets 200 kills, which increases his skill stat by 30. Gainer also has the Oversense skill, which increases accuracy and evasion when he hits 130 morale. This stacks with King Gainer’s Overskill, which adds a bunshin and additional accuracy and mobility at 130 will. You can see how crazy this can get, and that’s without taking into account Sword Cut and Shoot Down, which runs off of the skill stat.

Van has the unique skill YII, which increases Van’s overall stats as his morale rises. This can get insane with his already strong melee stat. The Daiku-Maryu pilots have the Flame skill, which increases accuracy, evasion, critical, and armor. Jeeg gets a 25% damage buff and 25% incoming damage reduction at 130 morale.

Have Van hide in a nearby forest for the defensive terrain boost and wait until turn 3, when the next plot event happens. Or you can try to defeat Suspage first. His Zelgaia is the same as it was in the previous stages, but this time, he won’t run.

A classic-style Super Robot. Decent bulk, attack power, and four pilots. It does have a problem with accuracy when fighting these Overmen, though. Eldora V is only usable on this stage, so have fun with it while you can.

A melee and speed focused repair bot. It’s better at combat than the other repair bots at least, so it makes a decent partner for land-based units.

I’ll never forgive you for trying to take control of this town by force! I’ll punish you with the Brownie!

Defeat all enemies without letting anyone die. Basically, have Nero tank, Van cut down the weakened enemies, and Priscilla either finish off enemies or heal Eldora/Dann when necessary.

I’ll cover bosses when the main group shows up.
