Image "Somewhere else?"

Image"Uh, yeah..."

Image"You're not giving me much to work with, kid."

Image "Miss Jackson, are you certain that he was with you last Monday night?"

Image Chance blinks. She looks surprised.

Image "Oh no! I'm sorry, I thought you said Thursday."

Image I'm not sure how anyone could make that mistake... She looks at Detective Gurski with an apologetic smile and giggles.

Image "I guess I didn't really think things through bursting in here like that."

Image "Now there's a surprise."

Image Jupiter's dry utterance is juuuust loud enough for Chance to hear her, but the barista cheerfully ignores her. I'm going to assume there's a history here I don't know about. I'm also going to assume I don't want to know about it. Detective Gurski turns to Jupiter.

Image "I'd like to see the video you mentioned earlier."

Image "Of course. Follow me."

Image Gurski points at me.

Image "You come with us."

Image "I what?"

Image "I'm not letting you out of my sight, kid. Now get up and let's go."

Image "Right."

Image I scramble to my feet and follow him out the door. Out of the corner of my eye, I see Chance slip away from the group. Looking for her boyfriend, I guess.

Image
Image

Image A lone laptop sits on one of the counters. Jupiter strides up to it and types in a password.

Image "Right here. David and I are the only ones with clearance to view the security footage, so none of the others have seen this."

Image The screen lights up with the video that I found hidden at Mr. Auten's place last week. There's not much to it. Just someone who looks like me walking down the main hallway.

Image

Image "Well, that's not very subtle."

Image "It's also not me."

Image "Then who is it? Your evil twin? An android?"

Image "I don't know!"

Image Detective Gurski sighs and turns to Jupiter.

Image "Could you give us a moment?"

Image He grabs my arm and drags me to the corner of the room.

Image "Listen, kid. You're on really thin ice here."

Image "I thought- no, we ALL thought highly of you and your sister. But who's to say you haven't changed these last three years? You disappeared without a trace, and two people have died since your return."

Image "The worst part is, all of these deaths tie back to your history. You don't think that's at least a little bit suspicious?"

Image "But I didn't-"

Image "Even if you didn't kill them, you're involved. Give me a good reason why I shouldn't just arrest you now."

Image

Image Aki places a firm hand on his shoulder and looks him directly in the eye.

Image "And you know what that means."

Image "I'm well aware of what it means. Are you?"

Image He releases his grip on me.

Image"What are you doing here, anyway?"

Image Aki holds up her phone.

Image "You texted me an order to come right away."

Image She doesn't bother to hide the sarcasm in her voice.

Image "And when my handler says jump..."

Image "I meant why are you at the University of Edgewater? I wasn't informed that you were on assignment. And where are the others?"

Image "With their tour guide, as they should be. We're here on official business. I called it in this morning."

Image She folds her arms across her chest.

Image

Image Schulz!?

Image "Hang on, she's involved?"

Image Aki and Detective Gurski look at me, surprised.

Image "She's the one in charge of our little work program. Didn't I tell you?"

Image "No. You never mentioned she was part of this."

Image "Then how do you know her?"

Image

  • Schultz was briefly mentioned in Kansei; Kangai was worried about her finding out that he was alive and back in Edgewater.
Image Aki's eyes light up.

Image "Ooh, Kan. You bad boy. I didn't know it was like that."

Image "It's not. WE volunteered for it. Unlike you, I didn't have to get arrested before I decided to work with the police."

Image Aki shrugs.

Image "Our way was more fun."

Image "Yeah, that's one word for it."

Image Detective Gurski rolls his eyes.

Image "Anyway, as delightful as this game of compare and contrast is, we do have more pressing matters. So maybe one of you two wants to fill me in?"

Image Aki coughs and shoots a meaningful glance over my shoulder. Jupiter is leaning against the wall staring at us. David and Nathan peer in through the doorway, trying hard not to look conspicuous. They're all staring at us. We're too far away for them to have heard our conversation, but they're definitely curious about what we're talking about.

Image "Outside, then."

Image The tone of his voice says there's no room for argument.

Image "Lead the way, Officer."

Image Detective Gurski gives me one last look before he and Aki exit the lab. David and Nathan scramble to get out of their way, stumbling into the lab like some sort of slapstick routine. Once they untangle from each other, they quickly take up posts on either side of Jupiter.

Image

Image "Um, okay... so, yeah..."

Image No response. Great. The room falls silent and I struggle for something to say. Or do. Or... I don't know.

Image

Image Aaron's voice echoes from the hallway, breaking through the silence. He swings the door open and sings a little fanfare.

Image

Image Naoki and Li Mei stand behind Aaron. They look relieved to see me.

Image "Oh, hey. Found my group! Heh..."

Image "Uh oh. Looks like something bad happened."

Image His finger hovers instinctively over his camera, ready to capture whatever bad moment might occur.

Image “He's the one who stole our research last Monday."

Image "No, he's not. He's my host student."

Image Jupiter points to her computer screen.

Image "Ohhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh."

Image He turns to me with a hurt expression on his face.

Image "Kangai, did you really steal from us?"

Image"NO!"

Image I roll my eyes.

Image "I know what it looks like, but it's not me!"

Image "Then how do you explain it?"

Image Naoki raises his hand timidly.

Image "U-um..."

Image "Who are you?"

Image "Kizaki Suitani..."

Image "My other host student."

Image Aaron casts him a sideways glance.

Image "You're not a thief too, are you?"

Image "Hey, the jury's still out on me, you know!"

Image "That's hardly the point."

Image "UM!"

Image "What? If you have something to say, just speak up."

Image "Oh. Okay."

Image Naoki approaches the computer and points at the person on the screen.

Image

Image The guy in the video has solid dirty blond hair, unlike mine. I still have the remains of when I dyed my hair black last year. Naoki had pointed it out the first time we watched it, but we just assumed the video was taken before I dyed my hair. If this video was taken last week, that might actually count as evidence in my favor. Jupiter crosses her arms.

Image "And what if he dyed it after this video?"

Image "But wouldn't he dye all of his hair in that case? Or get it cut?"

Image "I suppose... but it's still a flimsy alibi."

Image "And that's currently all he's got going for him right now."

Image "Hey, it's better than nothing!"

Image "I mean, it's enough of a difference to think it might be someone else, right?"

Image "We'll see after the police sort it out."

Image

Image Jupiter sighs.

Image "Don't you two have somewhere to be? Like office hours in the library?"

Image "Oh!"

Image "Right."

Image "Dios mío, do I have to remind you of everything? Try not to keep your students waiting too long."

Image The two of them scurry out of the room and slam the door shut behind them. The room falls into an uncomfortable silence, punctuated only by the sound of footsteps echoing in the hallway. Before their footsteps fade, the bell in the center of campus begins to ring.

Image "And now they're late."

Image "Um..."

Image “Something wrong?"

Image "I'm not sure."

Image Naoki frowns. He looks troubled.

Image

Image "What's not the same?"

Image He turns away from Jupiter and whispers to me.

Image

Image I shrug.

Image "Sounds the same to me. It's probably nothing."

Image

Image "If you care that much, go check it out."

Image "Umm..."

Image He bobs his head back and forth as if he's having trouble making a decision.

Image "What's wrong?"

Image "I was just wondering if there was something special about the bell that just rang."

Image "Not particularly."

Image

Image "Are you sure?"

Image "Uh huh. Let's go."

Image "But what about Haru? Maybe we should wait for her."

Image "You go ahead. We'll let her know where you are when she gets back."

Image Naoki thinks about it for a moment before nodding.

Image “Okay. Let's go."

Image Aaron and Naoki leave, and the room again settles into yet another uncomfortable silence. That seems to be the theme of the day. Now might be a good time to try to convince Jupiter I'm innocent.

Image

Image

Image

Image "I'm really sorry about all the confusion. If there's anything I can do..."

Image "No. Not really."

Image "But..."

Image "Listen, there's a lot going on right now. Even if you're not the thief, the research has still been stolen. And since I'm the one who has to do damage control, I don't have time for anything else."

Image

Image Aki pokes her head into the room and flashes me a teasing grin.

Image "I'm not sure how to answer that."

Image "You could say "yes.""

Image "And where's the detective?"

Image "Out. He said he had to call someone."

Image Aki tosses herself casually onto one of the stools and spins around.

Image "Where's my brother?"

Image "Um, he went off to the clock tower with Aaron."

Image Why?"

Image Her voice tenses up.

Image "Said the chiming sounded funny. He seemed really bothered by it, so I told him to go check it out. No big deal. It was probably nothing, but-"

Image

Image "Nothing!?"

Image Aki stands up so quickly that she knocks her stool over. Even Li Mei looks a little worried.

Image

Image She turns to Li Mei.

Image "Are you getting anything?"

Image Li Mei shakes her head apologetically.

Image

Image "Then we're going."

Image Aki strides out the door without another word, and Li Mei follows her obediently.

Image "Um... I'm just gonna..."

Image Jupiter waves me off absentmindedly.

Image "Just go."

Image

Image "Which way did they go?"

Image "Um... I think this path is the shortest."

Image I point to a narrow path that cuts across the campus to the clock tower. Wordlessly, Aki takes off in a flat out run, feet pounding against the concrete. Li Mei follows without question. Her steps are smaller than Aki's but she seems to float effortlessly above the ground.

Image

Image Li Mei glances over her shoulder and notices me struggling to keep up. She slows her pace a bit, holding a spot somewhere between Aki and me. My heart is pounding harder and harder. Since when was running this difficult? Aki disappears over a hill, and I find myself gasping for breath as I slow to an uneven jog. My head is throbbing too. What's wrong with me? As I drag my feet along the ground, I realize that Li Mei has stopped moving. She stands at the top of the hill, clutching her stomach. If she and I are both feeling this sick... I reach the top of the hill, and we both stand in the shadow of the clock tower.

Image

Image Li Mei gives voice to what we both already know. My kansei and hers are both churning in the presence of a dead body. Someone who died recently, from the feel of it.

Image "Listen, if you wanna stay out here, I can tell Aki you're not feeling well."

Image She shakes her head.

Image "I will go."

Image I take a deep breath and steel my nerves.

Image "Then let's go together."

Image She nods, and we approach the tower.

Image

Image I look around the small room, but there's nothing here. The sound of voices floats down from above us. It must be upstairs. Li Mei and I look at each other and nod. The two of us laboriously climb the wooden stairs up to the top of the bell tower. With each step, I find it harder to breathe. I can't remember being this tired before. Whatever this death was, it must have been brutal to leave such a strong emotional imprint. I reach the top of the staircase and freeze.

Image

Image In the far corner of the room, Naoki sits curled in a trembling ball. His face is stained with tears. Aki is kneeling next to him, holding him close and whispering words of comfort into his ear.

Image

Image The mouth of the bell has nearly removed his torso. The body hangs precariously over the edge of the tower. The edge of the bell is still dripping with blood, and splatters of crimson trail down the tower walls. Aaron paces back and forth, speaking a jumble of frantic words into a phone.

Image

Image A voice at the other end of the phone tries to calm him down, but he grows increasingly agitated.

Image "No no no no, you don't get it! It's Dr. Johansen!"

Image My stomach threatens to abandon me entirely, and I'm suddenly glad that I didn't eat any lunch yet.

Image
Image

Image "Huh?"

Image Aki's voice snaps me out of my daze. She's staring directly at me. Naoki lies in her arms. His body is shivering, and his eyes are shut tight.

Image "You need to go. Your kansei is going to overpower you if you stay any longer."

Image I nod and turn away. She's right. I sit on the top step of the staircase and breathe slowly, trying to get my bearings. Li Mei sits beside me. She looks sad, and terrified, and very, very, confused.

Image "Are you okay?"

Image She starts, and blinks a few times, as if I've surprised her.

Image "…"

Image "Are you okay?"

Image She pauses to think carefully about her answer and sort out her emotions from ours.

Image "No... No, I am not okay."

Image "Yeah... me, neither."

Image We both stare down the long staircase of steps that we so painstakingly ascended. Neither of us wants to turn back to face the grotesque body. Finally, Li Mei takes a deep breath and stands.

Image "We need to leave."

Image "Yes."

Image The longer we stay here, the worse it's going to be. We make our way down the staircase carefully. With every step, I can feel the weight of the dead lifting slightly.

Image

Image I can still hear voices echoing through the stone tower. Aaron sounds even more frantic than before. Something warm splashes against my cheek. Ugh... I suddenly feel sick again.

Image

Image No... No, please... I didn't touch the body, but I've still come into contact with the deceased... My kansei is already creeping into my mind. I bite my tongue, trying to force myself to stay conscious, but I can feel my knees buckling under me.

Image "Kangai!"

Image
Image

Image

Image

Image I brace myself for the pounding that this man received, but it doesn't come. Instead, every part of my body screams with pain. I instinctively tighten my jaw, and my jaw complies. Wait... since when was I able to control my actions during these visions? There's something wet in my throat. I try to cough it up. In the distance, I can hear the faint echo of someone coughing. Is that me? I hear frenzied voices. Who's talking?

Image
Image

Image Aaron stands nearby, open-mouthed. His phone slips from his hand and lands on the stone floor with a dim clatter. I can hear it, but it sounds so distant. I turn my head slowly. Where's the body? I don't see it anywhere. As I look around the room, realization sinks in.

Image

Image I try to speak, but my throat is filled with blood. Little more than the sound of choked bubbling escapes from my lips. Aki looks like she's saying something, but my vision is starting to blur. Before I can do anything else, the world around me fades away. I see faces, now. People I don't recognize. Voices I don't know. There's a weight on my chest. I'm sinking further and further, and the weight keeps pushing harder. Bright colors fill my vision, and my body feels like it's on fire. Everything feels like it's spinning faster and faster. I scream, but I don't hear anything. Finally, the world turns black.

Image
Image

Image

Image

Image I take a moment to inspect it more carefully. It's modestly decorated, but the colors appear carefully selected to be as uninteresting as possible. I'm lying in a bed. The mattress is equally bland. Not terribly comfortable. Not terribly uncomfortable. All in all, I've never seen a room quite so... neutral.

Image "So. We meet again."

Image

Image I turn my head to see Li Mei sitting in a chair beside my bed.

Image "Hey. What happened?"

Image

Image Aki leans against the wall at the far end of the room. Her arms are crossed, and her expression remains casual.

Image "Don't say any more. Someone might be listening."

Image Her eyes briefly flick towards the mirror set into the wall. Right. I hope Jupiter and her team aren't “observing" me right now. That would be all kinds of creepy. I give Aki a small nod and turn my head to face the ceiling again.

Image "Where's, um... Kizaki?"

Image "He's sleeping at the dorm."

Image "Is he okay?"

Image "No. No, he isn't. He's overwhelmed, and sick."

Image "I'm sorry."

Image I turn my head back and forth to inspect the bland room.

Image "So what am I doing here?"

Image "Resting. Aaron's in his bed. Kizaki's in the other one. We figured you'd like a proper place to rest other than the floor."

Image "Thanks."

Image Aki allows a thin smile to crack across her face.

Image "Thank Li Mei. She's the one who did most of the heavy lifting."

Image She sounds terse.

Image "Is there something I'm missing?"

Image "What are you talking about?"

Image "I mean, are you mad at me or something?"

Image Aki's expression tightens.

Image "You let my brother go off on his own. You let him experience that horror."

Image "I LET him go? Since when was I his babysitter? In case you haven't noticed, he's a grown adult! He's not a child to be doted on!"

Image Li Mei glances at me, then Aki. She looks worried.

Image "I'm well aware he's not a child, but I'm not sure you understand that! You're the one who dismissed his concerns! If you trusted his judgment, you wouldn't have sent him off on his own like that!"

Image "That doesn't change the fact that it was HIS choice to go!"

Image "Kangai..."

Image "You know what? I think you're angry because he went and did something without your precious permission!"

Image
Image
Image
Image

Image Li Mei stands quickly and places herself between us.

Image "Stop!"

Image It's the first time I've seen her look so determined.

Image "You are both scared and confused, and you're mistaking it for anger. We only have each other. Please do not destroy what we have."

Image "Li Mei..."

Image Li Mei nods at Aki.

Image "Go see him. He needs you."

Image With a sigh, Aki steps back and shakes her head.

Image "You're right."

Image She smiles sadly at Li Mei.

Image "I'm sorry for making this hard on you."

Image She takes a moment to regain her composure before speaking again.

Image "We'll have to talk later, Kan. About what happened at the tower."

Image "Oh, right. Yeah..."

Image Aki nods and shuts the door softly behind her. Li Mei sits at the foot of my bed and stares at me with wide eyes.

Image "You're hurting."

Image "A little. I'm still not sure what happened."

Image "Blood."

Image Li Mei's voice is so quiet, I almost missed what she said.

Image "What?"

Image I lean towards her, and she lowers her head to meet mine.

Image
Image

Image She reaches out and places her hand on mine for a brief second before flinching. My head is still throbbing. It must hurt her too much simply to touch me.

Image "I'm sorry."

Image "No..."

Image She turns away from me. I can tell she wants to say more, but she's struggling to find the words. We sit in a tense silence for a minute, avoiding eye contact.

Image "Listen-"

Image Li Mei shakes her head.

Image "Please just rest."

Image She smiles and rests her hand gently on mine again.

Image "I will be near."

Image "Thanks."

Image I close my eyes and take a deep breath. This time, sleep comes easily. Gone are the bright lights and the weight on my chest. I feel like I can breathe again. I'm not sure how long I sleep, but by the time I wake up, my mind is a lot clearer.

Image "Whoa..."

Image I sit up slowly. My body feels stiff. I look around the room. Li Mei is in the chair beside me, sleeping. Even in sleep, she sits upright, hands folded neatly in her lap. If it weren't for the subtle motion of her breathing, I'd mistake her for a work of art shaped by a master artisan. The lighting is still neutral. I can't tell if it's day or night.

Image
Image

Image I reach out and place my hand gently on Li Mei's. Her skin feels cold to the touch.

Image "Li Mei!"

Image Her eyes fly open, and in a single unbroken motion, she leaps to her feet and snatches up the pen on the table.

Image

Image "Whoa! Whoawhoawhoa!"

Image I curl up on the bed and hold my hands up in self defense.

Image "It's just me."

Image "..!"

Image She looks surprised.

Image "I didn't mean to startle you, it's just... I thought you might be sick or something." Li Mei blinks a few times, as if she's just waking up for the first time.[/i]

Image

Image "Something wrong?"

Image She tosses the pen back on the table and averts her gaze.

Image "No."

Image Okay, I get the hint. Conversation over.

Image "How long was I out for?"

Image She points to the bedside table. Unsurprisingly, Team Science has refrained from leaving a clock in the room, but the phone that Aki gave me is sitting next to the lamp. I pick it up and look at the screen. It's 5:00pm already?

Image "Wow... did I really sleep that long?"

Image Li Mei nods.

Image "Where are the others?"

Image "Gone."

Image Okay. I dial Aki's number. The phone only rings once before she answers.

Image

Image "Evidently. Where are you?"

Image "Back at the dorms. Taking care of Kizaki right now."

Image Kizaki? Hm, someone else must be with her if she's calling him that. I can hear the faint sound of frenzied music in the background. Some sort of video game?

Image "Aaron's with you, isn't he?"

Image "Got it in one. How are you feeling?"

Image "Like my head just got bashed in with a giant bell."

Image She laughs, but it's forced.

Image "Yeah, this day didn't turn out quite like we planned, huh?"

Image "I'm sure it went well according to SOMEONE'S plan."

Image She's quiet for a moment.

Image "Yeah, I've been thinking the same thing. Why don't you come back to the dorms, and we can chat about it?"

Image "Sounds good. I'm starving, though."

Image "Cafeteria's still open. Do you have your card?"

Image I check my pocket.

Image "Yeah."

Image "The two of you should get some food, then. Come back when you're done."

Image "Sounds good."

Image "Talk to you later."

Image "Later."

Image I hang up and turn to find Li Mei looking at me expectantly.

Image "Aki says we should go get something to eat."

Image "Okay."

Image She turns and walks to the door.

Image

Image

Image I walk slowly, carefully placing one foot in front of the next. I'm still feeling ill from... whatever that was. Li Mei halts in her tracks, and tilts her head to the side.

Image "What's wrong?"

Image She glances at the door to the main lab. There's some sort of sound coming from inside. It sounds like someone talking. No... it's more panicked than that. Is someone in trouble? I run to the door and throw it open.

Image

Image A blur of fur darts between my legs and into the hallway. Before I can react, Li Mei steps forward and scoops it up in both hands. It's a small, white rabbit, with shining red eyes. Li Mei carries it back into the lab.

Image

Image Jupiter runs forward and lifts the rabbit from Li Mei's hands. She walks it back to a small cage, lowers the rabbit in, and shuts the door tightly.

Image "Haaaa!"

Image Jupiter leans back against a cabinet and sighs.

Image "Crisis averted."

Image

Image "It's okay. You can look."

Image Li Mei nods, and I can see a faint smile on her face.

Image

Image She leans down until she and the rabbit are eye level with each other. The rabbit turns to her, and its nose twitches. Li Mei scrunches up her nose to mirror its actions.

Image "Looks like you've made a friend."

Image Li Mei nods once and leans in even closer. Jupiter smiles. She looks a lot more relaxed than she did this morning.

Image "You look happy."

Image "Happy might be pushing it, but I'm definitely feeling better. Sometimes it's hard to keep a cool head when dealing with all the administration. Especially when the second in command slacks off all the time."

Image "Second in command?"

Image "David. He's supposed to be in charge of inventory and making sure everything is where it belongs."

Image She points at the rabbit.

Image "Like making sure all the rabbits' cages are locked properly."

Image "I see he takes his job very seriously."

Image "Indeed."

Image "So what's up with the rabbit, anyway? Are you giving it a super soldier serum? Gamma radiation?"

Image "Nothing so dramatic. Just examining the effects of some drugs on various organs."

Image "Oh yeah? Curing cancer, huh?"

Image Jupiter rolls her eyes.

Image "Hardly. What's the phrase? Too many cooks in the kitchen?"

Image "Um, too many cooks spoil the pot, I think."

Image Jupiter considers the phrase for a moment.

Image "Cancer isn't the only disease in the world, but it looks like it if you see what drug companies spend money on."

Image "So you're not in it for the money?"

Image "I have enough already."

Image Jupiter brushes the question aside.

Image "So, um... how exactly do you examine the effects of these drugs anyway?"

Image Jupiter stares at me sympathetically before glancing at Li Mei. Li Mei straightens up and faces her calmly.

Image "Do not worry on my account.

Image

Image "Oh."

Image I stare at the floor and kick at it a few times. That killed the conversation pretty fast.

Image "So, um... about earlier..."

Image "Don't worry about it. You're not the prime suspect anymore."

Image "What? You mean my name is cleared?"

Image "Yes. I calculated the thief's height based on his surroundings and matched it to you."

Image "What?"

Image
Image

Image "Oh. Well, that's good. I think."

Image "Good for you, perhaps, but now I don't have any leads."

Image "Must be rough trying to take care of the lab. Especially after what happened to Dr. Johansen."

Image Her eyes darken.

Image "What are you talking about? Did something happen to him?"

Image
Image

Image "What? You're kidding, right?"

Image "Not really. I'm sorry..."

Image Wow. That was probably the worst way to inform someone of a death ever.

Image "What happened? Was it here?"

Image "Yeah. Aaron and, um, Kizaki, were the ones who found the body."

Image "First his old research is stolen, and now this..."

Image Jupiter begins to absentmindedly chew on her nail.

Image "What? What are you talking about?"

Image "I can't be sure, but..."

Image She stands abruptly.

Image "I'm sorry, but I have a lot of work to do. Can you both leave now?"

Image Li Mei casts a final longing glance at the rabbit before following me out of the lab.

Image

Image

Image I guess dinner rush doesn't happen until later. Either that, or most students are avoiding this place. Ha. That instills a lot of confidence in me. Li Mei and I each grab a tray and pick out food for ourselves from the buffet. I ignore the first few trays loaded with greasy hamburger patties and opt for a bowl of tomato soup with a heap of fruit on the side. From the color, I'm not sure how long the fruit has been sitting out, but I don't get the luxury of being picky. Li Mei follows me closely, choosing to sample a small piece of everything. She arranges the bite-sized pieces of food in even rows on her plate. We offer our cards up at the register, and a bored looking college student swipes them both without bothering to check for ID. It's probably better that way. The ID that Aki supplied me with the other day feels like a lead weight in my pocket. She guaranteed it was government issued for my special situation, but I don't want to take any chances if I don't have to.

Image

Image "Hello."

Image "Glad to see you're sampling the local fare."

Image Shawn observes Li Mei's plate.

Image "Smart girl! Trying everything at once. Wish I had thought of that."

Image

Image Chance bounces up to us and wraps her arms around Shawn.

Image

Image "Sorry I'm late."

Image Chance turns and plants a dainty kiss on Shawn's lips.

Image "Um..."

Image "Kangai, this is my girlfriend, Chance."

Image I choke back my surprise.

Image "O-oh... that's... cool?"

Image Shawn looks at me, puzzled.

Image "Do you guys know each other?"

Image "Kangai was at the shop last week when that terrible murder happened!"

Image "Ouch, man. That's rough."

Image "You could say that."

Image "And everyone at the lab was harrassing him today. They mistook him for a thief!"

Image "Yikes, dude. If I had been there, I would have cleared everything up as quickly as I could."

Image "It's fine. The misunderstanding's been cleared up."

Image "Oh. Boss! I just hope this doesn't reflect badly on the school."

Image Chance nods enthusiastically.

Image "It would be great if you came here!"

Image They both stare at me expectantly, wide smiles on their faces. I feel like I'm in a used car lot.

Image "Um... This school is neat?"

Image Neat? Yeah, that sounds convincing... Li Mei tugs my shirt urgently.

Image "Um, I think we should get going... we're both pretty hungry."

Image "We won't keep you."

Image "Thanks. See you tomorrow."

Image Shawn and Chance leave the cafeteria, arms entwined.

Image

Image As soon as the door shuts, Li Mei turns to me. She looks worried.

Image "What's wrong?"

Image "That girl was there before."

Image "Before?"

Image "At the coffee shop. She was there."

Image "Oh, yeah."

Image "Kind of a weird coincidence, huh?"

Image Something in the back of my mind tells me it's not just a coincidence. In fact...

Image "Hang on."

Image Li Mei freezes, midstep.

Image

Image Li Mei's expression suddenly turns cold, and I instinctively brace myself.

Image "She's a liar."

Image Li Mei strides toward the cafeteria door with strict, calculated steps.

Image "I will speak with her."

Image "Hang on, what are you planning?"

Image No response.

Image "Wait!"

Image I grab for her wrist, but she spins around and slips her hand from mine.

Image "You can't just go in there and confront her about it!"

Image "…"

Image "You're right, okay? Chance... well, she lied to us."

Image Li Mei's gaze is blank. She refuses to move.

Image "But we don't have any proof! She could just say she heard my name somewhere around here. We have to find a way to catch her."

Image Recognition slowly flickers back into Li Mei's eyes.

Image "Kangai..."

Image

Image "It's okay. We'll figure this out together. We'll find a way to catch her. But for now, let's just eat, okay?"

Image Li Mei nods.

Image "Yes."

Image I scan the cafeteria for a place to sit. In one corner, David and Nathan share a table. They alternate between a huge pile of cheese-covered fries and the disordered pile of papers that litter the table. Looks like they're working on something.

Image "Let's join Nathan and David."

Image Li Mei nods, and we approach them slowly. They seem pretty engrossed in their work.

Image "Um, hey..."

Image They both look up at the same time.

Image

Image “It's the Not Thief!"

Image "Not Thief?"

Image "Yeah, Jupe said she cleared your name."

Image "So instead of the Thief, you're the Not Thief!"

Image And here I thought Aki had terrible naming sense.

Image "My name's Kangai. This is Li Mei."

Image "That works too."

Image "Wanna join us?"

Image "If it's okay."

Image Yeah. Why wouldn't it be?"

Image The two of them hastily shove their fries and papers to one end of the table. Li Mei slides into a seat, and I sit across from her.

Image "Um... aren't you getting your papers dirty?"

Image I point at the pile of papers sharing table space with the cheese covered fries.

Image "Eh, it's no big. The students won't notice."

Image "Students?"

Image "We're grading papers."

Image "You mean, those belong to students?"

Image David shoves a handful of cheese fries into his mouth.

Image "Yeah. Gotta turn them back tomorrow. Grades are due soon."

Image I try not to look skeptical, but Nathan doesn't miss the expression on my face.

Image "Don't worry. We'll be careful."

Image As I watch them sort out papers, it looks like Nathan's the only one actually being careful. David's pile of papers is peppered with grease stains and bits of cheese sauce. I feel bad for his students.

Image "So, where yins from?"

Image "Oh, um... I was born in Edgewater."

Image "Cool! Me too. Go Soundlings!"

Image "Yeah. Go Soundlings."

Image I half-heartedly pump my fist. Is that a sports team I should know?

Image "And where are you from, Li Mei?"

Image "China."

Image David perks up.

Image "Oh! Aaron's from China too! I think."

Image "Really?"

Image "Yeah. He's Thai, isn't he?"

Image "Um..."

Image "That's Thailand."

Image

Image "Taiwan and China are- never mind. It's complicated."

Image "Anyway, point was, I was wondering if you guys knew each other."

Image "…"

Image "Do you have any idea how big China is?"

Image "I was kidding, man."

Image That conversation fizzled out quickly...

Image "Are you both planning to get into biology in college, then?"

Image And Nathan saves the day before uncomfortable silence can take hold. Li Mei nods. Nathan turns to look at me expectantly.

Image "Oh! Um... I guess so."

Image "Well, you must be considering it pretty seriously if you're here."

Image "Do you have any questions about the program?"

Image "Yeah. What's it like working with Dr. Johansen? I mean, what's his research about?"

Image "You won't be seeing him unless you're a grad student."

Image "He doesn't even lecture anymore. We run all his classes."

Image "Busy with his work, then? What exactly does he do?"

Image "Lots of junk."

Image "Mostly modern medicine. Ways to heal the body faster."

Image "Or grow organs based on your own tissue!"

Image Isn't that what Mr. Auten was working on before he died? I glance at Li Mei. She's looking back at me. A silent nod passes between us. She's thinking the same thing. Again, Nathan notices our expressions.

Image "Something wrong?"

Image "Um, I seem to recall Auten Engineering working on something similar."

Image
Image

Image "Do either of you know why he left?"

Image David and Nathan exchange uncomfortable glances.

Image "Well, you didn't hear it from us, but Auten and his partner, Shen Guan, were part of some super hush-hush project."

Image "The government was funding the whole thing, but something bad happened."

Image "And by "something bad" we mean someone died. It's not official, but that's the only reason they'd shut it down so suddenly."

Image

Image "Auten started his own company, and Shen Guan disappeared."

Image Nathan lowers his voice.

Image "I heard that he moved to China where he could continue his research."

Image He glances sideways at David.

Image "Maybe we should ask Aaron if he's seen him."

Image "Ha ha."

Image "Do you know anything about the old project? Like, what it was about?"

Image "You'd have to ask Jupe for the details."

Image "Yeah, she's the only one who's seen the old project files."

Image "Well, her and Johansen, but he doesn't seem to be around right now."

Image My expression freezes, and I nod. Clearly I'm not supposed to be talking about Dr. Johansen's death yet. David shrugs and pokes at a fry without much enthusiasm.

Image "It's basically Jupe's lab these days."

Image "Hey, at least she named you second in command."

Image David rolls his eyes.

Image "Yeah, like THAT means anything. She's still in charge."

Image "If you don't want it, I'll take it."

Image Nathan laughs and gives David a teasing punch in the shoulder.

Image Li Mei tenses up and suddenly seems very interested in her last few bites of food.

Image "Anyway, kiddos, we've got to finish this before morning recitations."

Image He motions to the stack of papers on the table.

Image "We won't keep you any longer. Thanks for talking with us."

Image "Any time."

Image Li Mei stands, offers a quick bow, and the two of us leave David and Nathan behind to finish their grading.

Image

Image

Image "What's wrong? I noticed you didn't like something they said."

Image She nods and takes a small breath.

Image "There is fear and frustration, but they're too close. I cannot tell which is which."

Image "So they're not as happy here as they claim."

Image Li Mei nods. I laugh derisively.

Image "In the end, no one is."

Image The two of us take our time walking back to the dorms. Li Mei remains silent, but I can tell she is thinking about something.

Image "What's on your mind?"

Image "Is it real?"

Image "Is what real?"

Image

Image "You're talking about Auten's work growing organs?"

Image She nods.

Image "I don't see why it wouldn't be. I mean, it's not the body that makes you a person. It's... you."

Image "I'm not sure if I can explain it. But people aren't fashioned in a lab. Not the part that matters, at least. So, yeah. I think it's real."

Image She takes in my words silently and spends the rest of our walk deep in thought.

Image

Image
Image

Image "Uh, yeah..."

Image We briefly make eye contact, but I still feel bad about our argument earlier today.

Image "How's Naoki?"

Image "He'll live. He's resting in the room right now."

Image Aki kneels in front of Li Mei.

Image "Are you okay?"

Image Li Mei nods weakly.

Image "I am well."

Image "Don't lie."

Image She touches Li Mei and the young girl's body visibly relaxes.

Image "You're not alone. Stop behaving as if you are."

Image Aki takes both of Li Mei's hands in hers.

Image "Do you want me to sit with you?"

Image Li Mei looks surprised.

Image "But Naoki..."

Image "You were both there. You both need a break. Do you want me to sit with you?"

Image "Please."

Image Aki turns to me.

Image "I'm going to stay with Li Mei until she goes to sleep. After that, we need to talk."

Image

  • Going back to the room leads to a conversation with Naoki, that'll be covered later.
Image "Sure. I'll wait here."

Image Aki takes Li Mei's hand and leads her to their room. I throw myself on the couch and groan.

Image
Image
Image

Image I close my eyes and exhale slowly, but my muscles are still tense. I carefully review the events of the day, trying to place them all in order. My emotions won't stop churning inside of me. Or maybe that's dinner...

Image "You okay?"

Image I open my eyes slowly to see Aki sitting next to me.

Image "I've been better."

Image "Where's Li Mei?"

Image "Sleeping, finally. It took a while to calm her down."

Image "Calm her?"

Image

Image"Reverting?"

Image "Forgetting herself."

Image "But when I project thoughts, I do it selectively. When I touch her, I clear away everyone else's emotions and project only her own."

Image "But when you do it, doesn't that mean you feel everything she feels?"

Image "It hardly matters."

Image She scratches her cheek and glances away from me.

Image "So... you wanted to talk?"

Image "Yeah. About what happened earlier."

Image "I'm sorry."

Image "As am I. I've been expecting you to know everything about us, but I haven't been completely open with you."

Image She takes a deep breath and releases it slowly.

Image "So. It's open season. Ask what you want, and I'll answer you honestly."

Image A hint of a smirk plays on her lips.

Image "Within reason."

Image "Okay. Why don't you like Naoki looking at crime scenes? You said I didn't understand."

Image She nods once.

Image "Kan, what's the worst moment of your life? Do you remember it?"

Image "Of course I do. I lost the person I care about the most."

Image "How clearly do you remember it?"

Image "I still remember everything that happened, but I guess it doesn't hurt like it used to. It's been a while."

Image "Naoki's kansei is a double-edged sword. It's not just that he has a perfect memory. It's more like he stores up all of his experiences."

Image "If he reads a book, he doesn't just memorize the words. He actually memorizes what it feels like to read the book. That includes the temperature of the room he was in, or how he felt when he read it."

Image "So what happened today..?"

Image
Image

Image She lowers her head and buries her face in her hands.

Image "I can't let that happen anymore."

Image "Anymore?"

Image For a moment, Aki's body tenses up. She finally relaxes with a rueful chuckle.

Image "I did promise open season."

Image She sits up and clasps her hands in her lap.

Image "Our mother died during childbirth. All the doctors ever said was that there were... complications. It hit our father pretty hard. At first, he tried to be a good dad and raise us alone, but I guess the stress got to him. He started drinking. And then..."

Image She stares at her hands.

Image
Image

Image "That's when I first noticed Naoki's kansei. He'd wake up in the middle of the night, screaming in pain. He remembered every detail. Every strike, as if it was still happening."

Image "I don't know when my kansei appeared, but as soon as I figured out what I could do, I started trying to control it."

Image "You can master your kansei if you work at it. I couldn't force him to stop, but I learned how to redirect his anger."

Image "Redirect it? To who?"

Image "…"

Image Aki says nothing, but she instinctively clutches her arms against her chest.

Image "I'm sorry."

Image "Eventually, one of our teachers noticed and called Child Protective Services. I thought that was our escape, but they wouldn't let us stay together, so..."

Image Her gaze turns to the room where Naoki lies.

Image "So you ran away."

Image "Yes."

Image She glances at me out of the corner of her eye.

Image "I don't suppose I have to tell you what it was like."

Image "I guess not. But when I ran away, I was alone. I didn't have to look out for anyone else."

Image "By that same respect, you had no one to look out for you, either."

Image "I didn't mind being alone."

Image "I'll pretend I believe that."

Image "Ha. Thanks."

Image Aki leans back against the couch and stares at the ceiling.

Image "Anything else on your mind?"

Image "What happened to me? I mean... I think I was in Dr. Johansen's body. Like... I don't know. Possessing it?"

Image Aki wrinkles her brow. She defintely looks troubled.

Image "Have you ever had a blood reaction before?"

Image "I don't know."

Image "Kansei is made more powerful through physical contact. Blood contact amplifies that."

Image "Yeah, Li Mei mentioned that, but I'm not sure what she meant."

Image "When you relive someone's dying moment, you're basically already inside their head. So it makes sense that a blood reaction would put you inside their body entirely."

Image I shudder.

Image "Well, I hate it."

Image "Yeah, blood reactions tend to be fairly overwhelming. Honestly, I'm surprised you've never had one before."

Image "Well, I can't say my experience with my kansei has been very thorough. I do my best to avoid anything dead if I can help it."

Image "Well, you've done a really poor job of that this past week."

Image "Yeah, I've noticed."

Image Aki frowns and stares at the ceiling.

Image “You might not want to hear this."

Image "Open season, right?"

Image She looks at me sadly.

Image "Whatever's going on, it's about you."

Image "I was afraid of that..."

Image "Miko hasn't told us anything about you, but I know he knows more than you've shared. And the fact that he's here proves this is a special case."

Image "What do you mean?"

Image "We're not supposed to notice, but he's not really a proper member of the police force here. He was assigned to catch us, and all he ever really does now is make sure we don't get in trouble."

Image She grins.

Image "Or cause any."

Image

Image "So he came because it was about me? I don't think he was expecting to see me, though."

Image "Well if he didn't come for you, he came because there's something important here he has to watch over."

Image "And we came here to investigate Auten, who also died shortly after I returned."

Image "So whatever is here really is connected to you."

Image I groan.

Image "Why? I don't even know any of these people!"

Image "Then the question is, how do they know you?"

Image I bury my head in my hands.

Image "I don't think I want to know."

Image "I don't think we have a choice."

Image "Yeah. I know."

Image Aki places her hand against mine and I feel as if I've just taken in a breath of fresh air. My shoulders feel lighter, and the leftover sickness from today dissolves.

Image "What are you doing?"

Image "Filtering your thoughts. It works for the others. I assume it's working for you too."

Image I smile at her.

Image "Yeah, it is. I haven't felt this way in a long time."

Image Aki wraps her fingers around mine and lowers my hand.

Image "Good."

Image

Image Aki's voice gently breaks the silence.

Image "Tomorrow's going to be rough. You should get some sleep."

Image "Yeah... I guess so."

Image I let my hand slip from hers, expecting the weight of the day to flood back into my mind. Instead, the feelings creep sluggishly into the edges of my mind, but with a stubborn thought, I push them aside. Aki beams at me.

Image "You'll be able to hold onto yourself longer each time."

Image "That sounds ideal."

Image "See you in the morning."

Image Aki waves cheerfully, but her eyes look weary.

Image I grit my teeth and silently curse whoever invented the cell phone before answering.

Image

Image "What?"

Image

Image Gurski sounds amused.

Image "You know I hate that name."

Image "Just be glad I haven't told Aki about you. She'd have a field day."

Image "Your generosity is overwhelming. I assume there's a reason for this call other than your desire to start the day with the melodious sound of my voice?"

Image "Excellent deduction, kid. You'll be a brilliant detective yet."

Image "Ha."

Image

Image "Everyone thinks it was an accident at the bell tower."

Image "And?"

Image "And we need you to do what you're good at. Find the killer before this blows up. Talk to everyone around him and figure out who did it."

Image "All while hiding the fact that this was a murder in the first place?"

Image "Yes. You can handle that, right?"

Image "I know the drill. What about the others?"

Image "You're a team, aren't you? If you need any help, you can text them or me."

Image He pauses for a moment.

Image "Try not to make any calls, if you can. You never know who might be listening."

Image I glance up and see Aaron hunched over his desk, staring blankly in my direction.

Image "Good point."

Image

Image "That's dire. Is there something you know that I don't?"

Image "Probably. Now go to work."

Image I roll my eyes.

Image "You want fries with that?"

Image Gurski snorts.

Image "Yes, but make the soda a diet. I'm watching my weight."

Image He hangs up before I can come up with a retort. I pocket my phone and sigh.

Image

Image Aaron's voice lacks the energy he had yesterday.

Image "Police. They said not to talk about Johansen's death."

Image "You mean his murder?"

Image "…"

Image I sigh and nod.

Image "Yeah. His murder."

Image Aaron nods and spins slowly in his chair until his legs bump listlessly against the desk.

Image "I knew it. Something like that couldn't have been an accident."

Image He sighs.

Image "Well, I won't tell anyone. I don't want to talk about it at all if I don't have to."

  • As mentioned by Gurski, Kangai will receive texts from Aki, Naoki, Li Mei and Gurski throughout Yousei; these can be reminders of what Kangai should currently be focusing on, a follow up to a previous conversation, or a casual comment.

Image Stop by the bell tower and check out the crime scene if you can.

Image It is very early right now.

Image Talk to the students and learn more about Dr. Johansen.

Examine books on upper right shelf:

Image Some math and science books. They all have "pre-owned" stickers on them.

Examine books on lower left shelf:

Examine left bed:

Image Aaron's bed sheets have the Western State University logo on them. Isn't that the University of Edgewater's rival school?

Examine right bed:

Image A towel hanging off of David's bed.

Examine the chairs:

Image The chair spins around easily. Hours of fun for the whole family.

Examine the window:

Image The view out of the window faces away from the campus. It's rather uninspiring.

Image

Image Aaron slumps over his desk, resting his head in one hand and doodling a series of spirals in his binder with the other.

Image "You look busy."

Image He snorts derisively.

Image "Suuuper busy. These spirals won't draw themselves."

Image "If they did, that would be weird."

Image He groans and throws his pen across the room. It rolls sluggishly across the carpet before lodging itself in a pile of discarded clothing.

Image "This is so stupid!"

Image "Stupid?"

Image "Stupid! Super stupid!"

Image He runs his fingers through his hair furiously, as if he's trying to find something to hold onto.

Image "Dr. Johansen. I mean..."

Image He pounds his fists on the desk.

Image "That was not a thing I wanted to see... ever."

Image He pushes himself away from the desk and starts to stand up, but he gives up halfway through and slumps down in his seat again.

Image "Didn't like that pen, anyway."

Image He traces out the spirals on his paper with his finger.

Image "How are you okay with this?"

Image "What?"

Image He clutches his camera for comfort.

Image

Image He points at me.

Image "And you look like you just had the best night's sleep of your life."

Image "Really? Because I can tell you I didn't."

Image I could add that sleeping after a death experience is usually the worst part, but it's probably best to keep that to myself. Aaron lets out a long, weary sigh.

Image "But you're fine now."

Image "Hardly. I guess I'm just better at hiding it."

Image "Yeah?"

Image "I've seen a lot of junk. Stuff that people like to pretend doesn't exist."

Image I sit down in the chair opposite Aaron.

Image "And the hard part is going on with life. I mean, how can you, when you see such an ugly side to humanity?"

Image "Yeah. I know that feeling..."

Image "Then you know that it's not something you're ever fine with."

Image "You just know that there are still important things to be done, so you have to stand up and keep going."

Image "Sounds like you've got some experience in that area."

Image I sigh and prop my head in my hand.

Image "Well, I tried quitting once. Quitting everything, I mean. Someone very close to me didn't let me."

Image "So now, I keep going. No matter what happens, I have to."

Image "Well, whoever that person is, they have my thanks."

Image "Oh, are you feeling better?"

Image "Um... sort of?"

Image I laugh nervously.

Image "Sort of is better than nothing."

Image "I just don't know if I can handle this much longer."

Image "Handle what?"

Image "All the secrets. Yesterday, the police said I couldn't say anything about Johansen's death. Jupiter called last night to see if I was feeling okay, and I didn't even answer the phone. I didn't know what to say to her. And now everyone knows, but we still have to pretend it was an accident."

Image He buries his head in his hands.

Image "They're my friends. I can't lie to them. I... I wouldn't know how."

Image "Yeah, it's asking a lot of you."

Image

Image "Yeah. Us."

Image This undercover thing is annoying. I think I liked it better when I just didn't talk to anyone ever.

Image "You know, maybe you should take it easy for a while. Rest. You don't have to be up right now, do you?"

Image "No, but..."

Image "You said you don't want to be awake right now. So don't be."

Image "I-I shouldn't."

Image "I think maybe it's best if you do. If you want to talk, I can come back later. But for now, you need rest."

Image "I guess that makes sense... still feels super stupid. I feel like a wimp."

Image "You should never feel like a wimp for caring about human life. It's not as if having a high tolerance for blood and guts is something to be proud of."

Image "You might be the only person who thinks that way."

Image "Better than no one at all."

Image Aaron nods and stands slowly.

Image "I guess... I'll try to get some sleep then. Maybe everything will make more sense when I wake up."

Image

Image "Okay?"

Image "Right. Stupid question. Sorry."

Image Li Mei smiles and shakes her head.

Image "Not stupid."

Image "There are not many here, so it is quiet."

Image "Is that why you're here? There are fewer people?"

Image Li Mei shakes her head.

Image "Aki instructed me to protect Aaron."

Image "Why?"

Image "He may come to harm."

Image Now that I think of it, Aaron and Naoki were the first to find the body, but Aaron knows everyone here pretty well. He's probably the most likely to remember something to tie the killer to the scene. Aki was right to worry for his safety. But why Li Mei?

Image "I will not allow him to be hurt."

Image Li Mei seems to have picked up on my concern.

Image "I trust you'll keep him safe. But I'm more worried about whether or not you'll be hurt."

Image "Why?"

Image "Because I don't want you to get hurt. Obviously."

Image Li Mei's eyes grow distant.

Image

Image "What?"

Image "Please do not worry for me."

Image "Don't be ridiculous. Of course I'm going to worry about you. You're my friend and my teammate. We're supposed to take care of each other."

Image "Are we friends?"

Image "You really have to ask? Of course we are!"

Image "Then you are my first friend."

Image "What about Aki and Naoki?"

Image "Aki says we are family."

Image "You can be both, you know."

Image "Then I think we are both."

Image "And Detective Gurski?"

Image "He is not family."

Image Ha. That's Aki's influence for sure. Maybe I should leave that topic alone for now.

Image

Image "Um... have you ever met Schulz?"

Image "Who?"

Image "She's the one in charge of this, um... work program. Aki and Detective Gurski were talking about her earlier, and I was wondering if you'd ever met her."

Image Li Mei's eyes light up with recognition.

Image "Yes! I have seen her!"

Image "Oh? Does she ever come over to the apartment or anything?"

Image Please say no.

Image "Visits are rare. She is often busy."

Image Yes, I gathered as much based on her presence... apparently everywhere.

Image "Then when did you meet?
"
Image Li Mei holds up her hands and begins counting on her fingers.

Image"We first met for my demonstration. I did not hear what she said, but I knew she was very impressed."

Image Demonstration?

Image

Image "I did not understand her words at the time, but she was very..."

Image Li Mei frowns, as if she can't quite find the word she's looking for.

Image "On fire?"

Image "That sounds about right."

Image "Then after Aki and Naoki took me in, we met again. She seemed happy to see me."

Image "Whoa. Schulz happy? That's a new one."

Image "Maybe... it was relieved? As if she no longer had worry."

Image "Wait, you knew her before Aki and Naoki?"

Image Li Mei nods plainly as if I just asked the most obvious question in the world.

Image "What exactly do you mean by demonstration? And what was your hearing?"

Image "That I may not speak of."

Image "But you just did..."

Image "I am instructed not to share my former work. And I have given you no such knowledge."

Image "Yeah... I guess you didn't.... You take things pretty literally, don't you?"

Image "Do I?"

Image

Image "Why do you sleep in a closet, anyway?"

Image "It is more safe."

Image "More safe than what?"

Image "Sleep is vulnerability. It is foolish to be exposed."

Image "Um... I'm not sure I understand. Do you think you're going to be attacked while you sleep?"

Image "Do you not?"

Image "Oh... Um, I guess I never thought about it."

Image Great. I'm never going to sleep easy again.

Image "I don't suppose you've got room for two in that closet."

Image "…"

Image "Okay, that didn't come out right at all. Let's just pretend I didn't say that."

Image

Image "Do you have any idea who the killer is?"

Image Li Mei shakes her head. She looks disappointed.

Image "I guess killing intent isn't really an emotion, huh?"

Image "Often there is anger. Or bitterness."

Image "Hm, that's true..."

Image Li Mei's eyes are downcast.

Image "What?"

Image

Image "Aaron is truly distressed, but he also holds anger. Jupiter is frustrated and tired. She feels as if she is alone."

Image Li Mei hesitates. It's obvious she's not sure if she should tell me what's on her mind.

Image "What are you thinking?"

Image Aki and Naoki are angry too. Aki is angry because she feels as if she has failed. Naoki is angry because he feels he is not strong."

Image "And what about you? Are you angry too?"

Image "I do not wish to be, but I am not sure."

Image

Image "So what do you think of Nathan and David?"

Image "They are..."

Image She tilts her head to the side.

Image "Humorous?"

Image "You think they're funny?"

Image “They speak in jokes."

Image "What about that resentment you were talking about? Are they angry too?"

Image "Disappointed."

Image "About what? They look like they're having fun."

Image

Image Great. So... everyone's in a bad mood. That's reassuring.

Image "Do you really think Aaron's in danger?"

Image "You mean, why did I leave Li Mei to watch over him?"

Image "Well, yeah. I mean, I guess Aaron's the most likely to remember something incriminating, but..."

Image "But you don't think it warrants a 24 hour bodyguard."

Image "It's just weird."

Image "It's better than leaving him alone now and regretting it later. Besides, there's also the other option..."

Image "Other option?"

Image "He could be the killer. If that's the case, I don't want him running away."

Image "Can Li Mei really stop him from running away? She's... kind of small."

Image

Image "That's the least comforting thing I've heard all day."

Image "It's still early."

Image

Image "Any ideas who the killer is?"

Image "It's a little early to be asking that, don't you think? But if you want my initial impression, there's something about this whole setup that makes me feel really uncomfortable."

Image "Besides the body smashed up in the bell tower?"

Image "No, that's basically it."

Image She paces back and forth.

Image "Even if Naoki hadn't heard something wrong, the body would have been discovered fairly quickly. The bell tower is maintained pretty regularly, so whoever did this wasn't concerned about hiding the body."

Image "Maybe they didn't plan to kill Dr. Johansen?"

Image "You think it was an accident?"

Image "Well, not exactly... Of all the planned murders I've seen, they usually fall into one of two categories. There are clean murders: like poison; and there are messy murders, like strangling and stabbing. The messy murders are ones that are very personal. Whoever is doing it wants to feel directly responsible for the death. The scene itself is very messy, but the weapon is very impersonal. You can't feel your victim die if you're watching them getting smashed by a bell. So why do it? Why would anyone choose the bell as the weapon?"

Image "Maybe it was available. The murderer didn't plan it out, but he or she jumped on the opportunity when it presented itself."

Image "So it may have been an accident, but more likely, it was a crime of opportunity. Sort of like how a normal person doesn't think about stealing cars, but if you pass one with the keys in the engine, it's tempting."

Image "Normal people don't think about stealing cars?"

Image "Please tell me you're joking."

Image "Sure, why not?"

Image
Image
Image
Image

Image

Image "I'm afraid reanimated corpses aren't my area of expertise."

Image "That's okay. We're talking weaponry, anyway."

Image "In the case of a zombie apocalypse."

Image "We were debating whether it's better to carry a gun or a sword."

Image "Assuming you're only allowed one weapon."

Image "Guns have a longer range, and they're deadlier."

Image "But swords don't run out of ammo, and they're quieter."

Image "Except you have to get within biting distance to even use a sword! Hello infection!"

Image "So wear armor. And what are the odds you're going to hit the head of a moving target with a gun, anyway?"

Image "Pretty high if you actually practice, and sure easier than trying to cut a zombie in half."

Image "Hey, I know how to handle a sword. I've been training for years!"

Image "Not to rain on your parade, but if there were a zombie apocalypse, you'd probably be killed by other humans long before the zombies arrive."

Image "What?"

Image "Zombies are hardly different from pack animals. They just multiply faster. In a situation with limited resources and the threat of multiplying predators, the first thing you'd do is stock up on resources, right?"

Image "Well, yeah..."

Image "As will every other person on earth. Someone will probably kill you for your food and weapons before you even see a zombie."

Image "Has anyone ever told you you're a really gloomy person?"

Image "It may have been mentioned once or twice."

Image I've got office hours soon. Was there something you wanted to know?"

Image "Not much. Just feeling kind of weird, I guess. Especially with what happened yesterday."

Image "Oh, you heard about Dr. Johansen?"

Image "Y-yeah..."

Image "That's a terrible way to go, accidentally falling off the tower like that."

Image "That's what happened?"

Image "That's what everyone's been saying."

Image "Not like it makes any sense for him to be up there in the first place, but whatever."

Image "You don't seem that cut up about it."

Image "Everyone dies eventually. Feeling bad won't bring him back."

Image

Image "So, how long have you been a student here?"

Image "Maybe... three years?"

Image "I only came here for grad school. Got my BS in Steel City. Nathan's been here the longest. Technically, he's got seniority on this team, but Jupiter was a lot better with the undergrads."

Image David snorts and glances in Nathan's direction. Nathan flits among the students at his table, pausing once in a while to offer an exasperated sigh.

Image "He's terrible at teaching. No patience for it. I think he expects everyone else to be like him."

Image "How so?"

Image "He learns everything the first time around. I guess you could call him a natural."

Image "Unlike the rest of us who actually have to study."

Image I'm jealous already.

Image
Image
Image

Image "Oh?"

Image "You know, the locking you up and stuff."

Image "Eh, don't sweat it. It's not the first time."

Image Nathan coughs.

Image "Oh. Okay."

Image Right. Probably shouldn't have shared that little tidbit.

Image

Image "Did Dr. Johansen have any quarrels with anyone recently?"

Image "Not that I can think of. Why?"

Image "Just curious. I was researching him before I came, and I saw that some people disagree with his research."

Image "There will always be dissidents, especially when you're a trailblazer."

Image "But personally, I think he was a great man with great ideas. We all believed in his work. That's why we're here."

Image "Although..."

Image "Although?"

Image "He and Jupiter were definitely arguing about something last week."

Image "Oh? Do you know what?"

Image "Sorry, I didn't listen in too closely. She doesn't get angry too often, but when she does, it's best to just hide!"

Image

Image "So how long have you been a student here?"

Image "Um... this is year seven, I think."

Image "Did the whole undergrad thing, then stuck around for the grad program as well."

Image "Wow. That's... a long time to stay at the same school."

Image "Not if you enjoy it. I don't understand why some people think they have to keep moving around or do new things."

Image "Maybe it's for the experience?"

Image "But to what end? We can say experience, experience, all we want, but isn't it just a way to cover up how unhappy we are with our own situation?"

Image "It's not always like that. What if people just really enjoy it?"

Image "So you're a wandering sort of guy. No place to call home and all that."

Image "Um... you could say that."

Image "Is it because you enjoy it, or because you're not happy with anywhere you've been?"

Image "I don't know. Both? Why does it matter?"

Image "Even a ship needs a harbor to come home to when the ocean is rough."

Image "I'm not saying you have to settle down and start a family or anything, but I hope you'll be able to find a place to anchor yourself."

Image
Image
Image
Image

Image "Um, hey."

Image "Hey, Kangai. Looking for something?"

Image "Yeah. You, actually."

Image "Mission accomplished. Can I help you with something?"

Image "Just wanted to talk."

Image "About?"

Image "Dr. Johansen."

Image Jupiter leans and folds her arms.

Image "About his death, you mean. Did you see the body?"

Image I nod.

Image "How was it? How did he die?"

Image

  • Kangai has been honest with Jupiter so far, but now Kangai has a direct order from Gurski to hide the fact that Johansen was murdered – should Kangai disobey and tell Jupiter the truth, or follow instructions?

Image "I think it was an accident."

Image "He should have known better. The bell tower is dangerous."

Image She frowns. Something's clearly bothering her.

Image "Honestly, I don't understand why he was there in the first place. He had no reason to be."

Image "Yeah, that is kind of weird."

Image Jupiter studies my expression carefully. She looks suspicious.

Image "Are you sure it was an accident?"

Image "Well, I could be wrong. I mean, I'm not an expert or anything..."

Image Yeah, way to backpedal. Now she'll definitely believe you.

Image "This is bad."

Image "How so?"

Image She raises an eyebrow at me.

Image "Because a great man just passed away in a tragic way."

Image "Oh. Yeah..."

Image Way to go, man. As if you could make it any more obvious that this is normal for you. She probably thinks I'm some kind of sociopath, now.

Image "What about Aaron? How's he doing?"

Image "Not so well..."

Image "I should probably visit him sometime to see how he's doing."

Image "He didn't look very happy when I last saw him. I think he just wants to sleep for a bit."

Image She nods sympathetically.

Image "He deserves some rest."

Image

Image "Do you know why someone would want Dr. Johansen dead?"

Image "No se. He was always good to us, and never spoke ill of anyone. Maybe it's an extremist who hates his genetic manipulation research."

Image "He could have simply been in the wrong place at the wrong time."

Image "You're throwing out ideas, but you don't sound very convinced by any of them."

Image "The truth is I cannot think of anyone who didn't like him."

Image

Image "So, you and Chance don't get along?"

Image "What makes you think that we don't get along?"

Image Her voice oozes with sarcasm.

Image "Okay, bad question?"

Image "No, it's a fair question. Just not a pleasant thing for me to discuss."

Image "Sorry. Forget I asked."

Image "No, it's fine. If you stick around, you'll find out about it sooner or later."

Image "I'd rather you hear it from me, instead of over the rumor train."

Image "Chance is an undergrad who was given special permission to join Dr. Johansen's team. I argued against it, but David vouched for her."

Image "She's certainly smart enough to work on the project, but she lacks emotional and mental maturity."

Image "She behaves like a child when things don't go her way, and she's manipulative. More than once, the girl has tried to pit members of the team against each other with gossip and lies."

Image Jupiter sighs heavily.

Image "How so?"

Image "Last year, Shawn stepped down as head of Dr. Johansen's lab. Said his work for the school was taking up too much time. Chance told me I'd be a perfect replacement and she encouraged me to petition Dr. Johansen for the spot."

Image "But you got it..."

Image "I did. And then I discovered Chance told Nathan that the spot should have been his, since he has seniority. She told him that if I hadn't pressured Johansen into picking me, he would have had it."

Image "I tried to smooth it over with him, but I think he's still a little bit hurt."

Image "And, of course, it's gotten worse ever since I started dating David."

Image "What?"

Image "She and David used to be together. After they broke up, David and I started seeing each other."

Image

  • This event was mentioned back in Jisei.
Image

Image "After that happened, I asked Dr. Johansen to remove her. She's destructive."

Image "But she's still here."

Image "Yes."

Image "I see..."

Image "If she were willing to take her work seriously, I'd appreciate having her around."

Image "But right now, it feels more like she's trying to tear us apart."

Image "There isn't a member of this group she hasn't tried to manipulate in one way or another."

Examine the printer again:

Image There's a row of printers against the wall. The furthest one has a blinking red light.

Image "What's wrong with your printer?"

Image "Ignore it. It broke nearly half a year ago, but we rarely touch it. Dr. Johansen is the only one who keeps trying to use it."

Image The screen on the printer reads “(1) print job in queue." Hm... did Dr. Johansen try to print something? It may have been important. If I fix the printer, I can see what he was working on. I glance at Jupiter. I probably shouldn't try to fix this thing while she's still here. She mentioned wanting to check up on Aaron. I bet I could convince her to go see him, but I don't know how much time that will buy me. Is there a way to stall her after she leaves?

Image Shawn waves at me from across the room, his arms making broad sweeping motions above his head.

Image "Yeah, it was okay I guess."

Image "Was there anything you wanted to do today? Anything you wanted to try?"

Image "Um... not really. I thought I'd just wander around campus and talk to people."

Image "You don't want to sit in on any classes or anything?"

Image Right. Class. That's a thing I'm supposed to care about.

Image "Oh, well... I guess I might do that."

Image "No pressure, man. Just a suggestion."

Image "After all, this is supposed to be your experience. So experience it however you want."

Image "Oh, um... except for the bell tower. That's off limits for now."

Image "There was an accident there last night. I heard that someone died."

Image "Does this happen often?"

Image "What? No way, man! I swear this has never happened before!"

Image "Man, you've got to be going through the worst college experience ever. First you're nearly arrested, then someone dies?"

Image "I don't know. I think it's a really accurate representation."

Image "Hohohoho! That's a good one. You don't let anything get you down, do you?"

Image "Uh... sure."

Image "So, did you have anything else you wanted to know about?"

Image

Image "Do you know anything about Dr. Johansen?"

Image "He's old."

Image "Besides that."

Image "He's brilliant. Did you know that the military hired him for a top secret project about twenty years ago?"

Image "It's not very secret if you're telling me about it."

Image Shawn lets out a hearty laugh and leans forward, resting his arms on the table.

Image "Good point."

Image "No one knows what it was about, but my parents were students here at the time."

Image "Did they work on the project?"

Image "Nah, they weren't even bio majors."

Image "But when people in military uniforms keep going in and out of the biology building, people notice."

Image "Not so subtle, huh?"

Image

Image I wince at the thought.

Image "Hopefully not."

Image "But that's all in the past. These days, the University's focused more on sustainability than military."

Image "Sustainability?"

Image "Yeah. Renewable energy, small carbon footprint. All that good stuff."

Image "Don't know if you noticed, but we've got a fleet of bikes placed around campus. Any student can use them. Reduces the need for driving between this campus and the main one. Plus, it's a good workout."

Image "How generous."

Image Shawn laughs nervously.

Image "That's what they tell me."

Image

Image "I heard you used to be the head student in the lab."

Image "Those were not my best days."

Image "That so?"

Image "I got the job because I had seniority, but it wasn't a good fit."

Image "How so?"

Image "Well, it was a lot of work. Lonely work."

Image "I prefer work with a more social angle. Working alone in the back room isn't fun in the slightest!"

Image "That's why I love being a student liaison. If I weren't, I wouldn't get to meet a cool guy like you!"

Image "Okay... thanks?"

Image I'm not sure why he sounds so excited about getting to meet me.

Image

Image "So... when did you start dating Chance?"

Image "Huh... pretty recently. A couple months, I guess?"

Image "I don't think she's very serious about it, though. Seems more like a rebound thing. Or maybe revenge."

Image "And you're okay with that?"

Image Shawn shrugs.

Image "You never know until you try."

Image What does he even mean by that?

Image "You don't mind being used?"

Image "Hey, most girls date me for my money. I thought she was going to ask me to fund her singing career at first."

Image

Image "That's kind of a depressing outlook."

ImageA brief flicker of disgust moves across Shawn's face, but it's quickly replaced by his ever optimistic smile.

Image
Image

Image
Image
Image

Image "... I'm coping..."

Image "That doesn't sound too positive. You sure you shouldn't still be back at the room resting?"

Image "If I stay locked up thinking about it, it will just get worse. It may not be my kansei, but I can still feel Aaron's emotions when I'm near."

Image "I have to be here around people with more positive emotions. Having bright memories will help balance the darker ones."

Image "How I feel is the culmination of my experiences, so I have to keep filling my life with positive things."

Image "Really? So... do you watch horror movies or anything?"

Image "No, not really. They've never really held much interest for me, though."

Image "I've seen enough terrible things in real life - there's no need for me to watch it as entertainment."

Image "Are you okay with talking about what happened, then? I don't want to have to bring up bad memories."

Image "The memories are always there, and I'd like to do what I can to help."

Image "I don't want to have to hide all the time..."

  • New text from Naoki:

Image Mr. Gurski will probably want to hear a report from you sometime.

If you haven't checked the printer in the lab prior to this discussion, Naoki sends this text instead:

Image Have you explored everything? It might be a good idea to look around.
Image

Image "Aki told me about your father. I'm really sorry."

Image "So am I."

Image "You can't blame yourself for what happened."

Image "No? Every time I look back on it, I keep thinking that I was such a coward. I just wanted to pretend that it wasn't happening. I guess I thought that if I wished hard enough, it would just... change."

Image "Do you ever think about him?"

Image "It's impossible not to. I remember everything."

Image "Right. Sorry..."

Image "What is, is. You can't change the past."

Image Naoki pauses, and I see a faint flicker of recall on his face. He takes a slow breath, and forces a smile.

Image "What about your father? Did you know him?"

Image
Image

Image "But my dad was great. He used to joke that he and Mom were trying to raise their own personal army of children."

Image "You had a lot of siblings?"

Image "Two sisters and a brother. I think the plan was for more, but we wound up being a real handful. I don't think a day went by that John and I didn't get into some sort of pointless fight."

Image "Dad would make us go build something together as punishment. He said it would force us to learn how to work together."

Image "Man, our yard had a lot of ugly birdhouses built with crooked nails. He forced us to hang them up outside our windows to remind ourselves that we don't have to be perfect to help others. And that working together is always more productive than fighting."

Image "He really was something."

Image "You speak of him in the past tense..."

Image "He passed away this year. Heart problems run in his family."

Image "Oh, I'm sorry..."

Image "I came back as soon as I heard, but his funeral is long past."

Image "You could at least visit his grave, right?"

Image "I could. I was planning to, really. It's just that with everything that happened, I haven't had time to get away..."

Image "Why don't you talk to Mr. Gurski about it? I'm sure he'll give you permission to go."

Image Mr. Gurski?

Image "I don't know. Every time I talk to him, he seems a little... cranky."

Image "It's not you. I think Aki just has that effect on him sometimes."

Image I just wish she wouldn't fight him so much. I know she's trying to protect us, but she carries too much of the burden alone. And in the end... we let her.

  • Another text from Naoki:

    Image Um...sorry if I made you feel uncomfortable talking about our history. ^_^;;
Image

Image “Any idea who killed Dr. Johansen?"

Image "It's hard to say... I don't really know much about the outside circumstances."

Image "But you remember the crime scene. Anything important you can think of?"

Image "The door to the bell tower was locked, and my card didn't work on it. Aaron had to let me in."

Image "So only an actual student of the school could get in there."

Image Naoki nods.

Image "And then... Aaron went up the stairs first. I almost tripped over him at the top when he found the body. The blood was still pooling. It hadn't coagulated at all, so..."

Image Naoki swallows as he realizes the meaning of his words.

Image "That means that when the bell destroyed his body, he was still alive. But it doesn't look like he was trying to get out of the way at all."

Image "He must have been unconscious when it happened."

Image I sure hope so...

Image

Image "Turns out Nathan really wanted to be in charge of the lab, but Dr. Johansen appointed Jupiter instead. Nathan's been pretty unhappy ever since."

Image "That's not good. Do you think he killed Johansen as revenge?"

Image "Li Mei says that there's definitely resentment bubbling around Nathan. It's possible."

Image "Killing Dr. Johansen might be an act of revenge, but wouldn't he be more likely to kill Jupiter instead?"

Image "At least... if he did something like that, then he'd be able to get what he really wants."

Image "Hm... good point."

Image "Still, it's probably a good idea to keep an eye on him. Even if he's not the murderer, he might take this opportunity to do something rash."

Image

  • New text from Naoki:

Image Shawn doesn't seem very worried about what's going on, but I think it's just a show of confidence to keep the students calm.

Image

Image "You mean that someone died last night?"

Image "Shawn says the police are calling it an accident, but I'm worried..."

Image "What if there's a murderer running around campus?"

Image "That's kind of an extreme outlook. The chances of that are pretty slim, you know."

Image "That's true..."

Image "Besides, if there is one, I know you'll catch him!"

Image "What?"

Image "You were amazing at the coffee shop last week! I can't believe you managed to figure out the murderer so quickly."

Image "You're like a genius detective or something!"

Image "I think I'm more "something" than "genius.""

Image

Image "My what?"

Image "Every detective needs an assistant, right?"

Image "It'll be perfect! I mean, we've already solved one case together."

Image "I'm not sure I agree with your definition of "together.""

Image "We could go around and solve all kinds of mysteries. It'll be fun!"

Image "I'm not sure I agree with your definition of "fun," either."

Image "See? We already have the witty banter part down."

Image "This isn't some TV series where we get to run around having adventures and shooting guns at attractive people."

Image "Fine. Ruin my fun."

Image "There's nothing fun about someone dying - accident or not."

Image "Just trying to lighten the mood. You really are a sourpuss."

Image

Image "So if you really think this is a murder, who do you think did it?"

Image "That's a good question. Hmm... who could it be?"

Image "You think Dr. Johansen was killed, but you don't even have an idea of who it might be?"

Image "Well, I don't want to implicate the wrong person from the start!"

Image "I'm not going to go point a finger at the first person you mention, you know."

Image "Well, if that's the case... I guess I'm most suspicious of Kizaki."

Image "What?"

Image "He was at the coffee shop last week too!"

Image "I didn't notice him at first because he blends into the background so well. But don't you think it's suspicious that he was in both places?"

Image "Um... you and I were in both places too..."

Image "But you solved the case, and I know it wasn't me. So that leaves him."

Image "But he helped catch the killer."

Image "OR, they were working together, and he decided to let her take the fall."

Image "Think about it. Dr. Johansen and the victim from last week both worked with Auten Engineering. Maybe he's trying to finish what she started."

Image "Besides, I hear he's the one who discovered Dr. Johansen's body. Don't they say that whoever finds the body first is the most suspicious?"

Image Wow... she actually has a point. Sorry, Naoki.

Image

Image "Why don't you and Jupiter get along?"

Image "Because she's fussy and controlling. Obviously."

Image "That was a quick answer."

Image "She just doesn't like the fact that an underclassman can be part of Dr. Johansen's special team."

Image "So she'll take every opportunity she can to give me a lousy job. Last week, I had to scan all the old research files to be stored digitally."

Image "Bo-RING."

Image "That's really all there is to it?"

Image "Of course. I didn't do anything to make her mad, so that must be it!"

Image Well, that's definitely not the answer I got from Jupiter. Conflicting stories. Oh joy.

Image
Image
Image
Image

Image Detective Gurski quickly positions himself between me and the bell tower.

Image "You're on guard duty? Seems kind of dull for someone of your status."

Image "Life isn't always about what's fun."

Image "That much I know."

Image "So what are you doing here?"

Image "Investigating, like you told me to."

Image "Well, you can't do it here. Crime scene is closed."

Image "You're kind of tying my hands, here."

Image "I told you to dig into his research."

Image "Besides, haven't you had enough trauma here, already?"

Image "Don't tell me you're trying to protect me."

Image

Image "That's not actually in the job description, is it?"

Image "Does it matter? I still do it."

Image "Anyway, if I can't go inside, I guess I should go."

Image "You're welcome to look around. Just don't cross the police line."

Image "I should probably get back to the lab, anyway. If I follow our original assignment, I might be able to find a thread."

Image "Original assignment?"

Image "Yeah. Figure out what Mr. Auten was up to."

Image "Up to? Seems like all of his business affairs were in order."

Image "He may have been doing a little more on the side..."

Image "We searched his house pretty thoroughly, but they couldn't find anything that we didn't already know about."

Image "Um..."

Image Before we left, I swiped a hidden SD card with some of Auten's files on it. None of us had been able to decipher the contents of the files, but Aki insisted that we keep my find a secret.

Image "Now would be a good time to tell me if you know anything."

Image "You still don't trust me?"

Image "You're my handler. How do I know you're not reporting all my dirty little secrets to a board of men in black suits sitting in a dark room?"

Image "I usually give the reports on casual Friday, so no black suits."

Image

Image "If I tell you I'm not, would you believe me?"

Image "…"

Image "What about if I remind you that I still haven't arrested you yet?"

Image "Okay, but..."

Image "And that I didn't tell Schulz that I saw you pocket something at Mr. Auten's place right before that mess with Kevin?"

Image "Wait, you knew?"

Image "Of course I knew. It IS my job to notice these things."

  • Gurski sends a new text here:

Image Thanks for being honest with me. I'm glad I can still trust you.

As far as I'm aware, this text message can't be seen in-game as the conversation automatically continues, text messages can't be read during a conversation and Gurski immediately sends another text at the end of this conversation.
Image "Why didn't you say anything about it?"

Image Actually, I think I just did. So what was it?"

Image "An SD card. Mostly a bunch of documents and formulas that we couldn't decipher."

Image "Documents you'll be handing over to the proper authorities, I'm sure."

Image "Uhh... yeah. I was definitely going to get around to doing that."

Image "What else?"

Image "He also had the video from today."

Image "The one of you breaking into the lab?"

Image I cough pointedly.

Image "Right. The one of someone who looks like you breaking into the lab?"

Image "Yeah, that one. I don't know how he got it, though. Didn't Jupiter say that hardly anyone has clearance to the security footage?"

Image "No doubt Dr. Johansen had that level of clearance."

Image "If Dr. Johansen is the one who sent the video to Mr. Auten, then that confirms the video is linked to their old research."

Image "But that doesn't explain how it's linked, or who that person is."

Image "Well, I kind of hoped we'd be able to ask the good doctor about that."

Image Gurski's expression darkens.

Image "If I were the paranoid type, I'd be inclined to say that someone is trying to stop you from getting answers."

Image "And are you the paranoid type?"

Image "If I were, I wouldn't tell you."

Image "Fair enough."

Image "So you basically came here to dig through Dr. Johansen's research and possibly find out what else Mr. Auten was working on."

Image "That's the idea, yeah. Aki set us up with some sort of high school student program where we get to experience college life or something similar. But when we got here, Naoki sensed that something was wrong. I thought it was nothing, but-"

Image

Image "Yeah, I know that NOW."

Image "Anyway, he sensed something was wrong, we found the body in the tower, and you probably know the rest."

Image "More or less. Now if you'll excuse me, I need to return to the crime scene."

Image "Yeah, I should probably get going..."

Image "Keep me updated."

  • New text messages:

Image Chance is kind of weirding me out. It might be a good idea to keep a close eye on her.

Image If you see anything out of place, tell me first.

    Image I saw a butterfly.

Image Everyone here seems to think Dr. Johansen's death was an accident. D:
Image
Image

Image "Was that really Dr. Johansen in the bell tower?"

Image "Sure was. They haven't, um... reconstructed everything yet, but they did manage to match one of his remaining prints."

Image "Any prints not his?"

Image "A few here and there, but I'm not optimistic. Nothing that looks like it was left by the killer."

Image "Great. Another dead end. Um... I didn't mean it like that."

Image

Image "Are there any suspects?"

Image "You mean other than you?"

Image "Hey!"

Image "…"

Image "Okay, that's fair. You're not going to arrest me again, are you?"

Image "Couldn't even if I wanted to. Schulz says you're untouchable."

Image "I'm going to pay for that one, aren't I?"

Image "Being in her debt is not a pleasant situation. And if she agreed to give you clearance to Auten and Guan's research, she must be very serious."

Image "Wait, she's in charge of that too? How much is she involved in?"

Image "I don't even know, and I'm-"

Image He sighs.

Image "It's beyond my pay grade."

Image "And to answer your first question, no. So far we haven't found anything that could be linked to the killer."

Image "Naoki said that you need an ID card to get in. He says his didn't work, but Aaron's did."

Image "That at least narrows it down to students and faculty, but that's still a lot of names."

Image "It's probably safe to assume it was one of the grad students. No one else knew Dr. Johansen would even be here."

Image

Image "I spoke to Naoki about the scene."

Image "And? Did he remember anything?"

Image "He says the blood pattern looked like Johansen was still alive when the bell struck him. But it didn't look like he was trying to move out of the way, so he was likely unconscious."

Image "The killer probably knocked him out and assumed that letting the bell do the dirty work would cover up anything else."

Image "That means whoever killed him didn't actually have to be there at the time of the killing."

Image "Pretty much."

Image "But Naoki didn't hear anything strange when we first arrived, so whoever did it had to have placed him there sometime within the hour after we arrived."

Image "That's a pretty narrow window. Try to find out everyone's alibi for that time."

  • Anothet text from Gurski:

Image Have you talked to everyone about where they were during 10:00 and 11:00?
Image
Image

Examine door:

Image The doors are shut. The police probably don't want people trying to peek inside.

Examine windows:

Image It's impossible to see in the windows. They're too high up.

Examine police car:

Image A police car. Good for letting everyone know to stay far away.

Image
Image
Image

Image "Naoki says you try to handle too much on your own. I think he's worried about you."

Image "What does that even mean? I'm fine."

Image "It means that you try to shoulder everyone else's burdens, but you never share yours with us. Last night, you filtered Naoki's kansei. And Li Mei's. AND mine! You're putting so much strain on your body!"

Image "So?"

Image "So it's not healthy, okay? Naoki and Li Mei have you to lean on, but who do you have?"

Image"Kan... I think you're misunderstanding..."

Image "Look at Naoki. He's a genius. He can master anything he looks at. Li Mei's practically psychic, and the way she fights..."

Image "At the most I can push people in a direction they already want to go. I'm so far behind..."

Image Aki pauses. It looks like she wants to say something, but she's not sure if she should.

Image "Kan, you took over that man's body. That's not-"

Image She shakes her head.

Image "Even with blood contact, I can't tell someone else what to do. But you... you just took over. You're amazing, too."

Image "But when I look at these amazing things you guys can do, I see how much it tears at you. How hard it is to stand up under the weight of it."

Image "But I can make it go away. Just for a little bit, I can help."

Image "Can't I help?"

Image "I'm not saying not to help. I'm just saying that your brother is worried you're trying to do too much on your own."

Image "He's worried about you. So am I..."

Image "Then what would you have me do? Leave you to deal with the pain of your kansei alone?"

Image "Why not just trust us to help you once in a while?"

Image "Including you?"

Image "I don't know. Maybe? I mean, I'm stuck with you guys for a while, right?"

Image "You make it sound so dire."

Image "You want to help so much? Get back to work on this case."

Image "That I can do."

Image
Image
Image
Image

Image "This is the library, right?"

Image "Yeah."

Image "Then I'm pretty sure I'm not lost."

Image "It's just that you come in here a lot, but you don't seem to be looking for anything in particular."

Image "I'm just... exploring."

Image "You seem more like you're going in circles."

Image Okay, there's a little bit of that in there.

Image "You're not bored, are you? You need something to do?"

Image

Image "There are bikes?"

Image "Yeah. Every few years, Shawn's family donates a fleet of bikes to the school."

Image "Anyone who wants to use it can just grab one and bike around campus."

Image "That sounds like it has the potential to go very wrong very quickly."

Image "Yeah, the bikes get wrecked or stolen pretty fast."

Image "But it's still cool! The Tasse family is probably the most awesome family ever."

Image "Rich, smart, and environmentally responsible. The whole family is a triple threat."

Image "And Shawn's the only eligible bachelor of the whole bunch."

Image "Honestly, if Jupiter cheated on me with him, I wouldn't mind at all."

Image "TMI, man."

Image "Okay, so basically Shawn and the Tasses are perfect and rich."

Image "Shawn and the Tasses!"

Image "Sounds like a great name for a band."

Image "I call dibs on lead guitar."

Image "Man, I wanted lead guitar."

Image "Then next time, be faster."

Image
Image

Image "Where were you yesterday morning between 10:00 and 11:00?"

Image "Um... around?"

Image He shrugs.

Image "I don't remember things."

Image "Could you at least try?"

Image "Um... Jupiter says we have to be at the lab at 10:00 every day. So I guess I was there. Just like every other morning."

Image

Image "Did you see anyone else at the lab yesterday morning?"

Image "Yeah. You."

Image Oh. Right.

Image "What about Nathan?"

Image "Well, yeah. We share one of the smaller labs, so we were both there all morning."

Image "And Jupiter?"

Image "Um... I don't think I saw her until you showed up."

Image "That was a lot closer to 11:00, though. You didn't see her at all before then?"

Image "Nope."

Image

Image "So... you and Chance used to date?"

Image "Haha. Well aren't you nebby? Who told you that?"

Image "Jupiter..."

Image "Figures."

Image "It didn't end too well?"

Image "I'm hard pressed to think of a way hot coffee to the face is a good thing."

Image "Why did you break up?"

Image "She said I wasn't being supportive enough, so she broke it off."

Image "Honestly, I think she was just looking for a reason."

Image

Image "Then why the coffee?"

Image "Um... well Jupe and I went to the coffee shop where she works. Chance asked if Jupe was her replacement and I told her she'd actually have to matter for me to need a replacement."

Image "Mature."

Image "Well I never claimed to make intelligent life decisions."

Image "So you weren't just dating Jupiter to get back at Chance?"

Image "Of course not!"

Image "Sorry. I'm not trying to be skeptical. It's just..."

Image "It's just you don't see how someone as studious as Jupe would date a slacker like me?"

Image "Well..."

Image "Listen, man. I like Jupe, so I asked her out. She said yes, so I guess that means she likes me."

Image "And I don't know if it's going to work out or not, but I had to at least give it a shot."

Image "Haven't you met anyone like that?"

Image "Like what?"

Image "Like you don't know if it'll be a good fit, but you know you'll regret if you don't try."

Image "Um... I don't know. I guess I never thought about it."

Image "Well you should. You don't want to miss out on cool stuff because you're not looking for it."

Image
Image
Image

Image "Where were you yesterday between 10:00 and 11:00?"

Image "At the lab. We're supposed to be in at 10:00 every morning to check on our work."

Image "Then we have classes to teach at 11:00."

Image "But if I remember correctly, we ran into you, instead."

Image "Yeah, I seem to recall that."

Image "Did you see anyone else?"

Image "Yeah, David was there the whole time."

Image "And Jupiter?"

Image "Can't say I remember seeing her at all. Sorry."

Image

Image "Aren't you and Jupiter on bad terms?"

Image "Who told you that?"

Image "I was just wondering. I mean, she got the job you wanted, after all..."

Image "Okay, yes. I was mad that Johansen appointed her, and things were really weird for a while. But we worked it out. That's what people DO."

Image "So you're totally fine now?"

Image "I haven't seen any indication of anything to suggest otherwise."

Image "What about Chance? Wasn't she unhappy that Jupiter got the job? I heard you were talking with her about it."

Image "She was just being supportive. I needed to blow off some steam, and she was there for me."

Image "You couldn't talk to David about it?"

Image "Of course not. He totally had the hots for Jupe, even back then. No way I was going to tell him about it."

Image
Image
Image
Image
Image

Image "Where were you yesterday morning between 10:00 and 11:00?"

Image "Here at the lab. Why?"

Image "Just curious."

Image “Strange thing to be curious about."

Image "Well, I got here around 9:00. I was the only one here at the time. I always check the labs to make sure everything is in order before I start working."

Image "Is there any way you can prove this?"

Image "Sure. I logged in using my student ID."

Image Jupiter leans over her laptop and types a few lines onto the keyboard.

Image "Look. You can see the time when I logged in right here."

Image She points at the screen. The monitor is lit up with a list of log in and log off times. Sure enough, she came in at 9:00 yesterday.

Image "What about the others? When did they come in?"

Image Jupiter taps a few more keys.

Image "According to the system, Nathan and David logged in at 10:00 as usual. Aaron didn't, but he got special permission to stay behind and wait for you."

Image

Image "Did you see either Nathan or David yesterday morning?"

Image "I didn't see either of them until I met you."

Image "So even though they logged in, they may not have been here. For instance, one of them could have used both cards."

Image "I wouldn't be surprised if they did."

Image "I try to give them freedom to show that I trust them, but... such a thing can be abused."

Image
Image
Image
Image

Image "Where were you yesterday morning between 10:00 and 11:00?"

Image "Giving you a tour, then working at the main office, if I recall correctly. Why do you ask?"

Image "Oh, um... just trying to remember. I'm kind of in shock after what happened last night."

Image "Oh, it really is a tragedy, isn't it? You know, if you want to talk to a grief counselor..."

Image "No, that's not it. I just... It's nothing. I'll be fine."

Image "If you say so."

Image "Did anyone else see you after you dropped us off at the dorms?"

Image "I guess? I went straight to the office, but class was in session so there weren't many people out. So maybe? Maybe not?"

Image
Image

  • Naoki doesn't have anything new to say at this point.
Image
Image
Image

Image "Where were you yesterday morning between 10:00 and 11:00?"

Image "I'm not a suspect, am I?"

Image "Everyone's a suspect."

Image "Ooh! You're taking this really seriously."

Image "Just tell me where you were?"

Image "If you must know, I was at work. I don't have to be on campus until noon, but I wanted to bring Shawn lunch."

Image "So I guess I arrived here a little after 11:00."

Image "Did anyone else see you before then?"

Image "I don't know. Maybe?"

Image "What does it matter? You're just going to suspect me anyway."

Image "There's no need to be hostile about it. I'm just asking."

Image
Image
Image
Image
Image

Image "Hey, if I get Jupiter to visit, can you stall her for me?"

Image "Stall?"

Image "You know... keep her busy. Talk to her and stuff."

Image "I am not skilled at talking..."

Image "You talk with me just fine."

Image "You are not the same."

Image "How so?"

Image "You are family."

Image "Then think of this as a mission. This is part of solving the case."

Image "Aaron's still resting right now, but as soon as he's ready, I'll send Jupiter your way. Can I count on you?"

Image "I will not fail."

  • New text from Li Mei:

Image Aaron still sleeps. Call later.
Image

Image "Have you ever had a blood reaction?"

Image "…"

Image Li Mei looks to the side. She seems uncomfortable.

Image "Oh, I'm sorry. If you don't want to talk about it-"

Image "Yes."

Image "Right, no problem. I won't ask about it any more."

Image "No. I meant... I have..."

Image "Had a blood reaction? What happened?"

Image Li Mei's eyes grow distant, and I wonder if I've dug into a memory that I shouldn't have.

Image "I forget."

Image "You don't remember what happened?"

Image "I forget who I am. For a time... I am no one."

Image "You mean you black out?"

Image "I hear thoughts of another. They fill my head until I no longer hear myself."

Image "You can actually hear that person's thoughts? Not just feel their emotions?"

Image She nods numbly.

Image "I'm sorry..."

Image "As am I. I did not understand what I was doing until then."

Image
Image
Image
Image
Image

Image "I talked to almost everyone about their alibis for 10:00 to 11:00."

Image "And?"

Image "Well, Shawn was our tour guide for most of the hour, then he says he went to work at the University Center. I remember he left Aki and Li Mei at the lab for a while. Chance says she was at work the whole time. Aaron's still sleeping, but I assume he was in his room all morning. Jupiter says she was in the lab for the entire hour, but no one saw her. David and Nathan were in the lab together that hour. Computer logon times confirm all three of them in the lab."

Image "Aaron and Chance seem to have the shakiest alibis, then..."

Image "True, but... I don't know if either of them have a motive."

Image "From what I can tell, Dr. Johansen treated both of them very well."

Image "Well, it's not like the others are airtight, either. Even if other people saw Shawn at the Center, there's still the gap of time after he left Aki."

Image “And just because a computer confirms a login doesn't mean that that person was there."

Image "So what next?"

Image "Search for motive. But do try to be discreet. Hang onto your cover for as long as you can."

Image "Right."

  • New texts from Gurski and Li Mei:

Image Everyone has an alibi, but some of them could probably be faked. Try to confirm all the alibis you can.

    Image Aaron stirs.
Image
Image
Image
Image

Image "Hey, feeling better?"

Image "I want to throw up less. Does that count?"

Image "I guess."

  • New text from Li Mei:

Image Aaron seems unwell. I think he had a nightmare.
Image

Image "Can you think of anyone who might want Dr. Johansen dead?"

Image "Pfft... no."

Image "Okay..."

Image "I don't think he stayed in any place long enough for anyone to hate him."

Image "What?"

Image "He was always zipping around the world giving talks and stuff. The only person here who he really spoke to was Jupiter. She's basically in charge of everything."

ImageHe pauses for a moment to consider a thought.

Image "Maybe Nathan will get the job now."

Image "Nathan?"

Image "Dr. Johansen appointed Jupiter as head researcher here, even though Nathan's been here longer."

Image "I heard he got super mad about that."

Image "You weren't here when it happened?"

Image "Nah. I only transferred here last semester."

Image "Who told you about Nathan?"

Image "Um... David, I think. He's my roommate, and he intro'd me to everyone when I got here."

Image

Image "Has Dr. Johansen been acting strange lately?"

Image "Strange how?"

Image "I don't know. Distracted? Scared?"

Image "No idea. Only met him twice, and he was p-busy both times."

Image "But I guess him coming here is kind of strange..."

Image "Oh? Why is that?"

Image "He was supposed to be on a European lecture tour, but he cut it short to return."

Image "I'm not sure why. I heard that he never cancels a tour."

Image Something must have brought him back in a hurry.

Image "Do you remember when he decided to come back?"

Image "Hm... sometime last week? Hard to say. Sometimes the days just run together."

Image "And he didn't say why he canceled it?"

Image "Nope."

Image

Image "Where were you yesterday between 10:00am and 11:00am?"

Image "Here. Sleeping."

Image "Sleeping?"

Image "Well, usually I'm supposed to be at the lab, but I got an exception because I was supposed to meet you."

Image "So... I slept in."

Image "Did anyone see you?"

Image "I wouldn't know. I was asleep."

Image "David was probably long gone by then. If he wanted to get to the lab on time, at least."

Image

Image "Do you remember anything from yesterday that might help figure out who killed Dr. Johansen?"

Image "I'm trying not to remember ANYTHING from yesterday, you know."

Image "Sorry to dredge up bad memories so quickly, but it's important."

Image "I know it's important. Doesn't make it any more fun. Let's see... didn't see anyone I know on the way there. Kizaki looked p-worried, but he didn't say much. Wait... on the way out, I saw Chance's car drive by."

Image "Are you sure?"

Image "P-sure... there's a kind of dent in the back shaped like a pumpkin. Or maybe a squash. But she was leaving the campus... which is weird, you know?"

Image She told me she didn't arrive on campus until after 11:00. Why would she be leaving?

Image "I dunno. I could be wrong."

Image
Image
Image
Image
Image

Image "Didn't you say you were going to check up on Aaron?"

Image "Ah, sí! Is he awake now?"

Image "Yeah. He was when I last saw him."

Image “Excellent. If you don't mind, could you step outside?"

Image "What?"

Image "I really don't feel comfortable leaving you alone in the lab."

Image Uh oh. Didn't see that one coming...

Image "Don't worry. I'll be back soon."

Image

Image I glance around and tentatively give the front door a tug. Locked. Go figure.

Image

Image The back door is locked too. Obviously. No way I'm going to find the code this quickly. My only option is to break in. Ha. Like I'd even know how. I'd have to be some sort of criminal... I'm afraid to ask, but Aki might... No way. There's no way she can do something like that. I glance up at the clock tower in the distance. This might be my only chance. I guess it couldn't hurt to ask.

Image
Image

Image "You don't know how to break into a building, do you?"

Image "Which building are you talking about?"

Image "Um... the biology lab..."

Image "That's a pretty high security building. It'll be difficult..."

Image "But you can do it?"

Image "Of course not."

Image I knew it.

Image "Naoki can."

Image ...I probably should have guessed that.

Image "So should I go talk to him?"

Image "No need. He's already on his way. Meet him behind the lab."

Image "And bring him this."

Image Aki tosses something to me, and I catch it in both hands. It's a pocket-sized screwdriver.

Image "A screwdriver? You just carry one of these around?"

Image "You never know when you'll need to put up a lot of shelves."

Image "Okay then."

Image
Image

Image "I believe you need this?"

Image I hand Naoki the screwdriver and he immediately begins to unscrew the face plate on the security pad.

Image "So, um... you learned how to break into places..."

Image Great conversation topic.

Image "Circumstances were different."

Image Naoki doesn't bother to look at me as he removes the plate and pulls out a tangled collection of wires.

Image "Yeah, no. I get it. I mean..."

Image "I'm sorry, but could you just give me a moment?"

Image "Right. Sorry."

Image Naoki sorts out the wires in the box and picks out two.

Image "We only have a few seconds of time, so as soon as I open the door, hurry. I'll have to stay out here to reset the alarm so no one gets suspicious."

Image "Got it."

Image Naoki takes a deep breath and closes his eyes.

Image "Go."

Image The door clicks, and I fling it open.

Image
Image

Image Hm, there's a sticker on the front. It's got a phone number for customer service. I pull out my phone and dial the number. It plays an unmemorable jingle for a few agonizing seconds before someone answers.

Image

Image "Um, hey. I've got this broken printer... was wondering how to fix it?"

Image "Please wait one moment, sir."

Image I pace back and forth as the cheesy hold music plays. I don't have much time here... It's going to be extremely awkward if someone walks in on me while I'm still on hold.

Image "Thank you for holding. How may I help you today?"

Image "Um, I've got this printer that isn't working... model number TD4715."

Image "What color is the blinking light?"

Image "Red."

Image "That means the ink heads need to be cleaned. It's a common problem with that model. Hold down the power and the stop button at the same time for three seconds."

Image I push down the indicated buttons and wait. The printer starts whining and something inside begins to spin.

Image "Okay, it's making noise..."

Image The printer whines a little longer, and the paper feed begins to spin.

Image "Oh, hey, I think it's printing. That was easy!"

Image "Is there anything else I can help you with today, sir?"

Image "No, I'm good."

Image "Would you be interested in taking a fifteen minute survey about the service you received today?"

Image "No thanks."

Image "Are you sure? You will be entered into a drawing to win a $100 gift card to-"

Image "I'm fine. Thanks."

Image "Thank you for calling Harvard Packette."

Image I hang up and hover around the printer. It whirs and sputters, but so far, nothing's printing. Come on...

Image

Image "Thank you!"

Image I snatch up the papers and make a mad dash for the exit.

Image
Image

Image I turn and race for the front door. I slam my shoulder into it and stumble out the lab, hoping that Jupiter didn't see me.

Image

Image Alright, what was Dr. Johansen trying to print here? I hope this isn't a chain letter or something... Hmm... it looks like a formal suspension notice. Dr. Johansen was going to suspend one of the students?

Image
Image
Image

  • Do we ask Aki and Naoki or Gurski to help with the suspension notice?

User avatar
Arguably I'd say we should rope them all in, but I think Gurski is more likely to be able to poke for Useful Info off this lead, leveraging being an authority figure rather than simply attempting to brain-prod people into answers

  • New texts from Aki and Li Mei.

Image Did you find anything in the lab? If you did, let's look at it together.

Image I did as you asked. What did you find?
Image
Image

Image "Looks like there's something of a soap opera going on here."

Image "How so?"

Image "Well, Shawn used to be lab head, but that role was passed on to Jupiter even though Nathan wanted it. Jupiter is now dating David, but David used to date Chance, who is currently dating Shawn."

Image "I don't suppose you drew out a chart for this?"

Image "Not really."

Image "With relationships like this, I can only assume that people are going to want to point fingers at each other."

Image "Take any accusations you hear with a grain of salt."

Image "Hm... gralt?"

Image "I'm not feeling it."

Image "So... any negative feelings still brewing?"

Image "I think so. Nathan's a bit raw about things. Jupiter's definitely still unhappy. Strangely enough, David's pretty relaxed about the whole situation."

Image "He doesn't mind that his ex is with Shawn now?"

Image "He and Nathan are actually really positive about Shawn."

Image "To hear them tell it, he's some sort of Prince Charming."

Image "Hmm... Prince Shawn...ing? No, that's all wrong. Hang on, I'll figure it out."

  • New text from Aki.

Image I've got it! They could call Shawn Tasse the “Shawntasy.”
Image

Image "I found this note queued in the printer, but I'm not sure what all these numbers are for."

Image "Let me see."

Image I hand the sheets of paper to Aki and she flips between them quickly.

Image "It's an access log. A list of who logs into the computer and when. But all of these time codes have the same ID number."

Image "The first page is a student suspension notice. The ID must match the intended recipient."

Image "I don't suppose you have any idea who this was meant for."

Image "Sadly, I have not taken it upon myself to seek out everyone's student ID number."

Image "It's probably private information, anyway."

Image

Image "Is there some way we could find out whose number that is?"

Image Aki grins.

Image "There's always a way."

Image "Let's go."

Image "Where?"

Image "To see my brother, of course."

Image Aki strides along the walkway silently and I fall into place beside her. Her eyes take on a distant look for a moment. Talking to Naoki, no doubt.

Image

Image "Are you up to it?"

Image "Up to what?"

Image Naoki nods wearily at the two of us.

Image "I've had worse."

Image He tries to speak reassuringly, but he sounds worn out.

Image "Kan found something. Looks like a student ID number. Was thinking we could do a lost and found, if you're up to it."

Image "That's not a problem."

Image Aki looks worried, but she nods and hands the printouts to him. He glances at the strings of numbers.

Image "Okay."

Image "Anyone we need to look out for?"

Image "Look out? We're not going to break into anything, are we?"

Image "Nothing like that. Sometimes, acquiring information is as simple as pretending you already have it."

Image "Shawn's in there. If you can talk to him for a bit, that would help."

Image "Consider it done! Come along, Kan."

Image Aki throws the front door open and marches in. I follow her, but Naoki hangs back from the two of us.

Image

Image "Shawn! So glad we could catch you. Kangai and I have a very important question for you."

Image "Sure. Ask me anything."

Image "Can you minor in bagpiping here?"

Image "Minor in what?"

Image "Bagpiping. You know..."

Image Aki holds her hands up and mimes playing a set of bagpipes.

Image "Like the instrument..."

Image "Um... I would have to look that up for you..."

Image "We'd appreciate it!"

Image "I'll be right back."

Image With a contented smile, Aki seats herself in a chair and leans back as if she's waiting for someone. The front door swings open and Naoki enters. He approaches the information desk timidly and waits for the bored looking guy at the counter to notice him.

Image "U-um, excuse me... I seem to have misplaced my student ID..."

Image

Image The guy snorts through his nose and gives Naoki a smug look.

Image "I can get a replacement here, right?"

Image

Image "O-oh. Sure, that's fine."

Image Naoki fumbles with his wallet and counts out a few bills.

Image "The number is, um... 147732100... 2... I think."

Image He recites the number from memory, and the worker types it into his computer.

Image

Image "Looks like my cue."

Image Aki pulls out her phone and taps the screen. Naoki's phone starts ringing, and he answers it quickly.

Image "Hello?"

Image "Did you know a hummingbird can fly backwards?"

Image I raise an eyebrow at Aki and she sticks her tongue out at me. I don't think I'll ever understand her.

Image "And upside down."

Image "You found it? Where!?"

Image "I'm kind of craving ramen. What about you?"

Image Naoki pauses for a moment before laughing.

Image "I thought I already looked there!"

Image "No, no, it's okay. Thanks. I owe you one!"

Image He hangs up and turns to the guy at the counter.

Image "Um, looks like I don't need one after all."

Image

Image The worker sighs and returns to idly surfing the internet.

Image "Time to go."

Image Aki waits for Naoki to leave before strolling casually to the door.

Image

Image Naoki beams.

Image "So what now?"

Image "Well, the ID belongs to Nathan. Talk to him, I guess?"

Image "What, I'm just supposed to walk up to him and ask if he killed Dr. Johansen?"

Image "Well, I was thinking more of tying him up and hanging him off a tall building. We could call it aerial motivation."

Image "Let me guess... aerivation?"

Image "Nope. Motivaerial. Nice try, though."

Image "Yeah, I'm just going to tell Gurski about it."

Image "Your loss. You go see Miko. I'm heading back to the student union to see if Shawn's got an answer about that bagpiping minor."

  • New text from Aki.

Image Turns out you can't minor in bagiping here. Disappointment. But hey, juggling is fair game! You talk to Nathan yet?
Image
Image

Image "I think Nathan might have a good motive for killing Dr. Johansen."

Image "What makes you say that?"

Image "Um... well, I found this note in the printer. It's an expulsion notice."

Image "Nathan was going to be expelled?"

Image "Supposedly for unauthorized access to confidential files."

Image I hand the papers to Gurski and he glances over them quickly.

Image "That's his student ID number on the second page."

Image "And how do you know this?"

Image "Um... it might be better if I don't tell you that."

Image Gurski arches an eyebrow, and it's not hard to tell he already has a solid idea of where I got the information.

Image "Right. Well, getting kicked out of school is a better motive than anything else we've got. Let's talk to him."

Image "I think he's at the library right now. We can meet there to talk to him."

Image
Image

Image "So anything else I should know about this Nathan guy?"

Image "Um, not much comes to mind. He's a TA for most of Johansen's classes, but the students don't seem to like him that much."

Image "He and David get along pretty well, but I hear he and Jupiter are still on rocky ground. I think he feels undervalued. Like he deserves more recognition than he's getting."

Image "Could be a motive to steal the doctor's research and sell it off to a competitor who might value him more. And if Dr. Johansen reported him, that would be a permanent mark on his record. He wouldn't find work anywhere."

Image "That sounds a lot more like a motive."

Image

Image He pauses momentarily to offer a word of advice to a guy who looks especially feverish.

Image "Um, hey Nathan."

Image Nathan barely bothers to glance in my direction.

Image

Image "No. It really can't. We need to talk about Dr. Johansen, but..."

Image Gurski nods at the group of students who have all stopped working to listen to our conversation.

Image "What's going on? Is something wrong?"

Image "They just wanna talk about something. Private, I guess."

Image "I could take care of your students for a bit."

Image A teasing grin spreads across his face.

Image "But you'll owe me dinner."

Image Nathan waves him off absentmindedly.

Image "When do I not?"

Image Nathan scans the library quickly before motioning for us to follow him.

Image "Over here."

Image He leads the two of us to find a remote corner of the library.

Image "So what did you want?"

Image Gurski holds up the first printout.

Image "Do you recognize this?"

Image "I'm afraid I can't help you with that. What is it?"

Image "It's an expulsion notice. Dr. Johansen was planning to expel you for unauthorized access to confidential information."

Image "Were you selling it to another research facility?"

Image Nathan snorts through his nose.

Image "You're joking, right? I haven't heard anything about this."

Image "Is that so?"

Image Gurski shows him the second page.

Image "Because I've got an entire page of login times with your student ID that says otherwise."

Image "What the-?"

Image Nathan leans in and squints at the page. His eyes widen as soon as he realizes what the numbers mean.

Image "But that doesn't make any sense!"

Image "It makes a lot of sense to me."

Image "This is the first time I've seen this! I never go back to the lab that late."

Image "And will the video evidence back that claim?"

Image

Image "Can you explain all of these logins?"

Image “No. I don't keep track of when I log in because there's a computer there to do it for me. As you know."

Image "And you're telling me that in this case, the computer must have gotten it wrong."

Image "Uh, yeah, no. Don't blame the computer. It's more likely that someone else used my card to log in."

Image

Image “They've never been able to keep up with us. Maybe he wanted to give them an edge."

Image "Plus, he keeps misplacing his card, so he borrows everyone else's cards all the time. Including mine."

Image "Why don't you try asking him about it?"

Image Detective Gurski and I trade glances. Nathan's alibi doesn't sound very compelling, but we can't refute it.

Image "Are we done talking? I've really got to get going. I've got a lecture in..."

Image He looks at the clock.

Image "Negative three minutes."

Image "You may go, but I'd strongly advise you not to leave campus."

Image Nathan rolls his eyes.

Image "Like I have time to."

Image He turns on his heel, scoops up his bag, and dashes out the door.

Image "So what do you think?"

Image "I don't know if I believe him, but it couldn't hurt to talk to Aaron."

Image "I think he's still in his room."

Image "Lead the way."

  • New texts from Gurski and Li Mei.

Image We're talking to Aaron now, right?

Image Jupiter came. She is truly concerned for Aaron's well being.
Image
Image

Image Li Mei looks up at me hopefully. She sounds serious.

Image "Yeah, I did."

Image "That is good."

Image "You did a good job stalling Jupiter for me. What did you talk about?"

Image "The rabbit. I wanted to know if it is well."

Image "Oh..."

Image "Why are you sad?"

Image "I'm sorry. I don't mean to be. But it's sad to think that it's going to die, isn't it?"

Image Li Mei shakes her head and smiles kindly at me.

Image "All pass away in time. You understand."

Image "I do. That's why it hurts. Sometimes in my dreams, I can still see the memories I've taken from those who have died."

Image "None of them expected to die. None of them thought their lives would be so short..."

Image Li Mei places a gentle hand on mine.

Image "None ever do."

  • New text from Li Mei.

Image I hope the rabbit is well.
Image

Image "Did Jupiter say anything else while she was here?"

Image "We spoke of her time here."

Image "Yeah?"

Image

Image "We also spoke of Shawn."

Image "Whoa. How'd he come up in conversation?"

Image "He lead before her. It did not make him very happy. His family chose that path for him. He hates his family."

Image Li Mei stares down at her hands and watches with a sort of distracted fascination as she locks her fingers together.

Image "I do not understand."

Image "Understand?"

Image "Family is not for hating."

Image "Of course not. But sometimes things go wrong. Sometimes people do things they shouldn't."

Image "But why?"

Image "Because we're human, I guess. People are complicated."

ImageLi Mei nods an eager agreement.

Image "Very."

Image

  • New text from Li Mei.

Image There is much turmoil. Someone is scared.

Image

Image "Hey, Aaron?"

Image "Yo, yo. Something up?"

Image "Um, we kind of have to talk about something."

Image "'Kay."

Image Aaron drops his pen on the binder, and pushes himself away from the desk.

Image "Wheeee..."

Image He spins in his chair a few times, and finally slows to a stop. His hand reflexively moves to his camera and he snaps a shot.

Image "'Sup?"

Image "Have you ever borrowed Nathan's ID card?"

Image "Yeah, all the time."

Image "Why don't you use your own?"

Image "Does it matter?"

Image "In this case, it kinda does."

Image "I lose mine a lot. Leave it in the lab, wrong pair of pants. Stuff like that. It doesn't matter which card you use to log in as long as you do, right?"

Image "Do you recognize this?"

Image Detective Gurski holds up the printouts and Aaron leans in to get a good look at it.

Image "Uhhhh..."

Image He squints.

Image "Yeah, not really. What is it?"

Image "An expulsion notice."

Image Aaron's eyes widen.

Image "That's no good."

Image "No, it really isn't."

Image "The data suggests that Nathan has been accessing files he shouldn't be. But we have reason to believe you were the one using it."

Image "Whoa whoa whoa whoa..."

Image Aaron holds up his hands in self defense.

Image "I-I didn't do anything like that!"

Image Gurski tosses the pages on Aaron's desk.

Image "You're from Western State, aren't you?"

Image "Yeah?"

Image "I hear Edgewater University and Western State are bitter rivals."

Image "Oh, uh..."

Image Aaron suddenly looks very uncomfortable.

Image "You still think of yourself as a Western State student. Just look at the stuff you keep in your room."

Image "Yeah, but..."

Image "So, what was the plan? You transferred here to steal information and send it to your friends across the state?"

Image "NO!"

Image Aaron folds his arms across his chest.

Image

Image "What do you mean?"

Image Aaron looks down and fiddles with the settings on his camera.

Image "We moved on from growing organs a long time ago."

Image "What?"

Image "The organs we were producing were failing. Hard. But we figured out how to encourage the body to grow certain cells over others. Which means that given the right stimulation, the body could regrow its own organs instead of us having to make new ones."

Image "Self regeneration?"

Image "Guided regeneration, and even that was limited. No new arms or anything crazy."

Image He looks up and his finger twitches instinctively over his camera.

Image "We haven't really gotten it working, yet... but the theory is solid!"

Image "Plus it has plenty of applications beyond organs. Like growing healthy cells instead of cancerous ones."

Image "But the research here would probably still be of great interest to anyone at Western."

Image "As if. Western wouldn't steal anything from Edgewater, even if they could."

Image "What makes you so certain?"

Image "We've got our school pride. Stealing research is like accepting help from the enemy."

Image "With all your dedication to Western, why did you even transfer here?"

Image "Clearly not for the excellent grad student program."

Image "You know, there's stuff more important than school loyalties."

Image "And for you, that would be..?"

Image "My boyfriend lives ten minutes from here."

Image "We got tired of the long distance thing when I was at Western, so I moved."

Image "Do the others know about this?"

Image "Well, duh. They've all met him."

Image "In fact, I was with him during each of the login times listed on the timesheet here."

Image "You remember all the dates and times you were with him?"

Image

Image "Although these login times are only every other week for some reason."

Image Either this is a coincidence, or whoever used the card waited for Aaron to leave before stealing the information. On top of that, if Nathan knew why Aaron switched schools, why did he suggest something different? Detective Gurski and I trade glances. The look in his eyes says he's thinking the same thing I am. Aaron picks up on our silent exchange.

Image "Something wrong?"

Image "Uh..."

Image "Do your lab mates know about your weekly gatherings?"

Image "Yup. I invite them every time, but they don't really want to go. Why?"

Image "One of your classmates suggested that you transferred schools to steal information."

Image Aaron's expression tightens.

Image "You mean Nathan."

Image "Well..."

Image "You just asked if I ever use his card."

Image I sigh.

Image "Yes. We mean Nathan."

Image "Well, you should probably know that EVERYONE uses his card. He and David hate getting up early to go to lab, so they trade off."

Image "How so?"

Image "They take turns waking up early and signing in at the lab with both cards. That way, they get to sleep in every other day."

Image "That sounds like a convenient little racket. And you're not part of this?"

Image "I actually like waking up early."

Image I keep forgetting people like that exist...

Image "So do you want phone numbers for my alibi, or something?"

Image "Not at the moment. Just... don't go anywhere. We might have more questions later."

Image "Sure. I've got nowhere to be."

Image
Image

Image "Detective?"

Image Li Mei steps into our conversation.

Image "What's up?"

Image

Image "Why do you not ask Aki and Naoki for aid?"

Image A thin frown spreads across the detective's face, as if he's just taken a bite out of something very bitter.

Image "I'd rather not..."

Image "They will find the truth."

Image "Li Mei's right, you know. Aki and Naoki can help."

Image "I know, but..."

Image "What's wrong? You've been fine with using them before. Why are you trying so hard to sideline them now?"

Image "Because I don't want them getting hurt!"

Image Gurski's patience snaps, and I take an involuntary step back.

Image "We all know the risks of doing this. They've probably faced worse. You aren't making any sense!"

Image "Because this mission doesn't make any sense! Why here? Why THEM?"

Image Gurski tightens his fists and for a brief moment I wonder if he's about to punch me in the face. However, he proves better at keeping his emotions in check than I've ever been, and he instead opts to turn away.

Image

Image "Okay, now I'm REALLY confused. Who are we talking about?"

Image With a frustrated sigh, Gurski shakes his head.

Image "Never mind. The two of you are right. This'll go faster with them working on it."

Image Gurski quickly regains his composure and he turns back to face me.

Image "We're going to recheck everyone's alibi for these dates. I'll speak to Nathan."

Image "You talk to Jupiter, and tell the twins to take David. Li Mei stays with Aaron just in case."

Image "Can do. See you soon."

Image

  • New text from Gurski.

Image Let Aki know that she and Naoki need to talk to David.
Image

Image

Image

Image "Yes and no. But you're on the case now. Officially."

Image "Finally! Why the change?"

Image "We've hit a little bit of a dead end. Remember that ID number I found?"

Image "Yeah. Nathan's right?"

Image "Yeah... except Nathan claims someone else must have been using his card. He said it was probably Aaron."

Image "But Aaron denied it, and he's got an alibi. He also said that Nathan and David use their cards interchangeably, so..."

Image "So we've got evidence of a crime and no one to pin it on."

Image "Gurski says you and Naoki are supposed to interview David."

Image "Convenient.”

Image “Well, it shouldn't take long for us to figure out what's up. Where is he?"

Image "The library."

Image "Good."

Image Aki's eyes close for a split second and she nods lightly.

Image "Let's get going, then."

Image The two of us move across the campus at a brisk pace, stopping outside the student lounge where Naoki waits for us.

Image

Image He looks pleased.

Image "Yup. Interrogation."

Image "Who?"

Image "David. Still trying to figure out the approach."

Image "What are we looking for?"

Image "We found evidence that someone's been stealing information and selling it off to Edgewater's rival school, Western State."

Image "Hm... why don't we try a home invasion?"

Image "Am I lifting?"

Image "That's usually easier. Unless Kan wants to try?"

Image "I have no idea what you're talking about."

Image "Besides, I have to go talk to Jupiter."

Image "Fair enough. But we'll teach you how to lift a wallet someday."

Image "You mean steal?"

Image "Shouldn't you be interviewing Jupiter right now?"

Image "Shouldn't YOU be interviewing David right now?"

Image "Well, I would be if you weren't keeping me here talking to you."

Image I wave Aki off with an exaggerated sigh.

Image "I'm going. I'll meet you guys outside the library, okay?"

Image "See you there."

Image
Image
Image

Image "Hey, do you have a moment?"

Image "I do, but please make it brief. I have a lecture soon."

Image "Have you ever used Nathan's ID card to log in?"

Image "You mean that childish game they play, swapping cards with each other?"

Image "No. I do not partake in it."

Image "But you know about it?"

Image "They think they can, how is it said... defeat the system?"

Image "I know they do not always arrive on time, but it is wiser to let them believe they are winning. Otherwise, they may devise a trick even harder to keep track of."

Image "Fair enough."

Image "And... I don't suppose you come here to work late?"

Image "Of course I work late. You know that."

Image "How late?"

Image "Maybe 10:00 or 11:00. Why do you want to know?"

Image "Someone's been logging in every other week. Late. Like, after midnight late."

Image "Yes, Nathan. I brought that to Dr. Johansen's attention."

Image "Is that what this is about?"

Image "I'm not sure. But we think whoever was logging in with Nathan's card was selling off information. Maybe to Western?"

Image "I find that difficult to believe."

Image "But I cannot say it is an impossibility. I will search the records more thoroughly later, but for now I must leave, or else I will be late for my lecture."

Image "Right, I get it. I'm leaving now."

Image I leave the lab before Jupiter can politely kick me out.

Image
Image
Image
Image

Image "Did we keep you waiting long?"

Image Aki and Naoki approach from the library. They look excited.

Image "Eh, not really. I'm afraid I didn't learn very much, though. Still no idea who was using the card."

Image

Image "What? How'd you get him to confess?"

Image "Um..."

Image "We're very convincing."

Image Aki smiles proudly.

Image "Uh huh. So he was the one selling information off to Western?"

Image "Um, yeah... not so much. He was the one logging in with Nathan's ID, but..."

Image
Image

Image "Seeing how far the test scores have fallen since their talk, I'm inclined to give David the benefit of the doubt."

Image "Except now we don't have a motive anymore."

Image I groan and rub my forehead. I can definitely feel a headache coming on.

Image "Maybe we're coming at this the wrong way."

Image "How so?"

Image "Well, we've been trying to find a motive and tack it to a person. Maybe we should try finding someone with the opportunity, then we can work out the motive. For instance, Nathan and David were together in the lab, so they alibi out."

Image "Actually..."

Image "What?"

Image "David confessed that he didn't go to the lab yesterday morning. He said it was Nathan's turn to wake up early, so he slept in. He didn't see Nathan until almost 11:00."

Image "Can we believe him? Aaron said he was asleep for most of the morning, so he can't confirm it."

Image
Image
Image

Image "In other words, we're back at the beginning."

Image Aki sighs and shakes her head.

Image "Fine. Divide and conquer. We're talking to everyone again."

Image "David just left to teach class, and Nathan's still out, too."

Image "Jupiter said she's got a lecture to teach."

Image Aki closes her eyes and lets out a quiet breath.

Image "Well, I just told Li Mei to talk to Aaron."

Image "That leaves Shawn and Chance. Which one do you want?"

Image "Um... Shawn, I guess?"

Image Maybe if I'm lucky he'll give me a free pen or something.

Image "Alright. We'll talk to Chance."

Image "Meet you back at the fountain afterwards?"

Image "Sure."

Image

Image Shawn is reclining in one of the chairs, absentmindedly scrolling through something or other on his phone.

Image "Um... hey."

Image "Yo! You look like you've got an important mission."

Image "Um, kind of. I just have a few more questions about yesterday."

Image "More? What else is there?"

Image "Just double checking a few things. No big deal."

Image "Well, feel free to ask away."

Image "You've... never used Nathan's ID card to log in anywhere, have you?"

Image "What? Why would I do that?"

Image "It was just a question."

Image "Well, it's kind of a weird question..."

Image The door to the student union opens and Li Mei enters. She looks serious. Her eyes light up as soon as she sees me.

Image "We have found something..."

Image "You mean you and Aaron?"

Image Li Mei nods and hands me one of the photos that Aaron snapped yesterday.

Image

Image Wait, this was taken yesterday? I don't remember seeing that bike... Someone must have been in the tower when Aaron took this!

Image "Oh, is that one of Aaron's photos?"

Image "He's a little overzealous sometimes. I can ask him to tone it down if you want."

Image "Actually..."

Image I point at the bike in the background.

Image "Is there any way of telling who uses the campus bikes?"

Image "Not really, man. I mean... it's not like we tag 'em or anything."

Image "Sorry. Wish I could be more help."

Image Li Mei frowns and takes a step towards him.

Image "No."

Image "Huh?"

Image "Is there anything you're not telling us?"

Image Shawn laughs nervously.

Image "It's nothing important. Just..."

Image "If it's not important, you shouldn't have any problem telling us, right?"

Image

Image "And?"

Image "When the first fleet started getting worn out, the school sold them off to students. That was maybe five or six years ago."

Image "My family donated a new set, but they're a different color."

Image "Wait... if that's the case..."

Image My mind is churning. There's only one person who could have been at the bell tower during the time Dr. Johansen was killed. Li Mei and Shawn stare at me expectantly.

Image "You have it!"

Image "What's up, man?"

Image "I know who the killer is!"

Image "What killer?"

Image "Dr. Johansen's!"

Image "Hang on. You're telling me someone murdered him?"

Image "Someone definitely murdered him, and Aaron managed to capture the killer's bike in this photo!"

Image "You're sure of that?"

Image

User avatar
Image

Image

Image "Nathan did it."

Image "Nathan? Do you have any proof?"

Image "Yes. That's his bike in the photo."

Image "But how can you tell?"

Image "You said that those bikes were sold off to students five years ago. You and Nathan were the only students here at that time."

Image "There are plenty of grad students who were here five years ago."

Image "But none on this campus. The main campus maybe, but not here."

Image "If you wanted a bike, you'd just buy a new one."

Image “You hate being associated with your family, so there's no way you'd use their famous bikes."

Image Shawn's eye twitches, but he doesn't reply.

Image "Nathan claimed he was in the lab all morning, but he doesn't have a real alibi."

Image "Jupiter says she didn't see him until later, and David was sleeping in his room. Nathan could have logged in at 10:00, left to meet Dr. Johansen, and snuck back in later without anyone knowing. And David would have to lie to back up his alibi if he wanted one too."

Image "Are you sure? I mean... he seems like a pretty great guy."

Image "Yes. I'm certain."

Image Shawn sighs and runs his fingers through his hair.

Image "Well, I think he just got done teaching a class, so he's probably in the sleep lab."

Image "The sleep lab?"

Image "Yeah. He lives off campus, so he usually crashes there for a while before his next class."

Image "Are you sure?"

Image "Definitely. He wouldn't be anywhere else."

Image "Thanks. You've been a big help."

Image I turn to leave, but Shawn grabs my shoulder.

Image "Hang on."

Image "What's up?"

Image "Well, if he's really the murderer, don't you think it's kind of a bad idea for you two to confront him?"

Image

Image "I think we can handle it."

Image "But why take the risk? Maybe you should go get that cop to help you out. He doesn't know you're after him. There's no hurry."

Image "Actually, that's where you're wrong. The longer we wait, the more he's going to think about running."

Image "Okay, but..."

Image "We're going now."

Image Li Mei and I leave before Shawn can protest anymore.

Image

Image "What was that about?"

Image I turn to Li Mei.

Image "Something doesn't feel right, does it?"

Image Li Mei shakes her head. Both of us feel uneasy, especially after seeing Shawn's swift departure.

Image

Image

Image

Image Shawn must have had second thoughts and given him a call. Nathan looks up at us, and I see panic flash across his face. He turns and runs back into the building.

Image "Go around!"

Image Without hesitation, Li Mei sprints around the side of the building. I run for the front door and throw it open before it can close all the way.

Image

Image "Let me go."

Image He pulls his light sword out and points it directly at me.

Image "You can't threaten me with a prop sword..."

Image With a determined grunt, Nathan smashes the blade of his sword against the floor. The end shatters in a small rain of glass shards. He points the jagged glass blade at me and turns it slowly. The sharp end glistens in the bright light.

Image

Image "Okay, I may have spoken prematurely."

Image I take a slow step towards him.

Image "Can you just tell me why you killed Dr. Johansen?"

Image Nathan glares and tightens his grip.

Image
Image

Image "And you do?"

Image "I deserve it more than you!"

Image Nathan races towards me and swings his sword at me. I jump back, but the glass tears into my shoulder.

Image

Image I clutch my shoulder and feel something warm between my fingers. I hold my hand tight against my shoulder to slow the blood, and try to ignore the sting. Guess he wasn't kidding about all that sword training...

Image "It's not fair!"

Image Nathan's practically screaming by now.

Image "Why do you get to have it when I can't?"

Image He swings the shattered blade at me again. I stumble back, barely escaping another cut.

Image "What are you talking about!?"

Image With an angry cry, he thrusts the sword towards me, driving the glass into my thigh. My leg collapses under my weight, and I take a desperate limp backwards. Blood rushes from my leg faster than I thought possible.

Image

Image "Wh-what..?"

Image
Image
Image

Image Blood pulses relentlessly from the cut in my leg. He must have sliced through something major. Nathan lifts the sword over his head and brings it down on my head.

Image

Image
Image
Image
Image
Image

Image Nathan releases the sword with a terrified squeak. Li Mei inspects her hand calmly and flexes it. It's still impaled on a long shard of glass. Her gaze turns to Nathan and with another inhuman shriek he turns and runs. Li Mei takes chase and overtakes him easily. With a fluid motion, she kicks his legs out from under him, and he falls to the ground.

Image

Image I can barely make out Nathan's terrified cries, but Li Mei looks disturbingly calm.

Image "Li Mei..."

Image
Image

Image He lets out a grateful, sobbing moan, and scrambles away from her, desperately clawing at the tiled floor.

Image

Image I take a shaky breath.

Image "I really underestimated him, but I'm trying not to be too cut up about it."

Image It's supposed to be a joke, but neither of us laugh. Li Mei presses one hand against my open wound and pulls out her phone with the other.

Image "I think it might be too late for that..."

Image It's even harder to breathe, and my head is starting to feel light. Li Mei stubbornly shakes her head and dials a number on her phone. Whatever conversation she has sounds like little more than frenzied sounds to my ears. As soon as she hangs up, she places her other hand on my leg.

Image
Image
Image

Image I think that was supposed to be a joke too, but I can't tell anymore. Why am I even trying to tell jokes right now?

Image "I'm cold, Li Mei. I don't think..."

Image

Image Li Mei cuts me off with an emphatic cry.

Image

Image Her body shivers, and I realize that with all my blood on her, she's probably having a hard time even staying conscious.

  • That was Li Mei's ending, which is the default ending you get if you don't meet the criteria for any of the other three ends. We missed the Gurski ending by one friendship point.

To get Gurski's ending, you have to have at least twenty one friendship points with him by the time Kangai realises that Nathan is the killer. Gurski starts with a base friendship score of ten, and there are four opportunities to raise his friendship; though one of those really doesn't count for reasons I'll explain a little later.
Image

  • Admitting that Kangai was not at the coffee shop gets five friendship points.
Image

  • Lying to Jupiter here is worth two friendship points. The thread voted to tell Jupiter the truth, if we had lied, we would have ended up with Gurski's ending instead of Li Mei's.
Image "Oh, well... I just heard he was supposed to arrive today, and he didn't."

Image "It happens. His schedule is always changing, so we've learned to expect surprises."

Image She laughs.

Image "I guess if you expect a surprise, it's not really a surprise anymore."

Image I try to laugh with her, but my stomach is starting to knot up. I feel really guilty for lying to her like this, but if the police don't want her to know, there must be a reason for it.

Image "Anyway, I hate to push you guys out, but I really have a lot of work I need to do."

Image "Sure, no problem."

Image Right now, any excuse to go would be a good one. I don't think I can lie to her much longer...

Image "Thanks."

  • Lying leads to this alternate scene later after Johansen's death has been officially announced.
Image Jupiter leans against the counter, examining something in her microscope. She sighs, leans back, and presses her thumbs against the bridge of her nose.

Image "You okay?"

Image "No. No, not really."

Image "What's wrong?"

Image She purses her lips.

Image "You didn't hear? Dr. Johansen is dead."

Image "What?"

Image "He died sometime yesterday."

Image "There are police on campus right now, asking all sorts of questions. And the bell tower's been marked as some sort of crime scene."

Image "The police are saying it was an accident, but they're behaving strangely. I don't know what to think."

Image "It's probably not a good idea to try to explain it without knowing all the details."

Image "I know, but after you guys took off yesterday, and Aaron didn't return any of my calls..."

Image "I was worried something terrible happened."

Image "Like?"

Image "I knew you were heading to the bell tower. If you had found the body..."

Image "Oh, well, um..."

Image "You did!?"

Image "Yeah. Aaron and Kizaki saw it first, but..."

Image "So last night, you lied to me."

Image "I'm sorry. We weren't allowed to say anything!"

Image "I suppose I should have expected that."

Image "What about Aaron? Is he okay?"

Image "Well, he wasn't hurt physically, if that's what you mean."

Image "But?"

Image "He's still kind of traumatized from what we saw."

Image "I'm not surprised. He was always uncomfortable when we had to euthanize the animals."

Image “I should probably go check on him sometime to see how he's doing."

Image "I think he just wants to sleep right now."

Image "Then I'll talk to him later."

Image

  • Admitting to taking the SD card from Auten's house is worth five points.
Image

  • Showing the suspension notice to Aki, and then choosing to have Gurski look into the ID number gets three points.
Image "Why don't we ask Detective Gurski to look into it?"

Image "Sure, if you want to do it the boring way."

Image "If by boring, you mean legal, then yes."

Image She shrugs and hands the papers back to me.

Image "It's probably the fastest way, anyway. Go ahead and talk to him."

  • New text from Aki:

Image Miko can probably figure out those papers for you. Bring them to him.
Image

  • However, showing the suspension notice to Gurski after Aki results in losing three friendship points; so you essentially gain three points, only to almost immediately lose them. This is the only negative friendship modifier in the game.

Image "And?"

Image "Well, it looks like it might provide a motive. Dr. Johansen was planning to expel one of his students. Problem is, he doesn't mention the student by name. There's a printout of a bunch of access times with a single ID listed, though. Aki said you might be able to help. Do you think you could convince the school office to look it up for you? I doubt they'd let someone like me look at student records."

Image "But if I asked, it would be a different story."

Image "Exactly."

Image "Well, it's the only lead we've got. Let's give it a go. Do you know where the administration office is?"

Image "It's okay for you to leave?"

Image "My assignment is a little... different from the other officers. My first priority is finding the murderer."

Image "Well, I think Shawn mentioned all the main offices being in the University Center."

Image "I'll look into it as soon as I can."

  • Going straight to Gurski with the suspension notice doesn't cause any change in friendship.

  • New text from Gurski.

Image Got the info you needed about that ID card. Come see me.
Image

Image "So? Get anything on the note?"

Image "Yes, actually. I took it to the school office, and they ran it. The student ID belongs to Nathan Holm."

Image "He's one of the grad students working on Dr. Johansen's current project."

Image "Where is he now?"

Image "In the library, I think."

Image "Then let's go speak with him."

Image "Sure thing. Meet you there."

  • New texts from Aki and Gurski.

Image There are a LOT of pigeons around here, and they're fat!

Image Are we going to talk to Nathan now?
  • There's one last thing to do before the ending...

Image

  • Getting Li Mei's ending unlocked her own pair of glasses. The other two options will unlock once we've seen the other two non-true endings.
Image
Image

  • After Kangai deduces that Nathan is the killer, Shawn again attempts to delay Kangai and Li Mei by trying to persuade them to get Gurski's help in apprehending Nathan. Since Kangai is getting along a little better with Gurski this time, he's more open to the idea.
Image Li Mei and I exchange glances. She shrugs. I glance out the window and sigh. He does have a point.

Image "I guess playing it safe is a good idea."

Image As we leave the University Center, I notice Shawn fidgeting with his phone. Strange...

Image
Image

Image "Something wrong?"

Image "It's like you know."

Image "I assume you didn't take up jogging for your health."

Image "That's fair."

Image "So what's up?"

Image "Went through some of Aaron's photos and found something. It's Nathan. Turns out David was covering for him, but his alibi's shot now. Shawn says he's always at the lab this time of day."

Image "Good work. Let's bring him in."

Image

Image As she approaches the lab, her steps slow, and I notice a worried look in her eyes. I feel a strange twisting in my stomach. Something doesn't feel right...

Image

Image "Upstairs, yeah."

Image I swipe my card at the door and it unlocks without resistance. As I open the door, the uneasy feeling starts to solidify. Jupiter is still out, so shouldn't the door be locked?

Image

Image "I don't feel good about this at all."

Image We make our way up the staircase carefully, listening for any signs of movement. Nothing.

Image "Are you sure he's here?"

Image "Shawn was pretty certain."

Image Li Mei freezes and totters on the steps for a moment.

Image

Image Suddenly my stomach begins to churn and my heart starts racing. My knees buckle, but I grab for the railing and pull myself up.

Image "No..."

Image I drag myself up the steps and throw the door open.

Image

Image His skin has turned a strange hue of blue, and his eyes look bloodshot. Detective Gurski squats beside the body and places his fingers on Nathan's neck.

Image "Dead. Very recently."

Image He frowns.

Image "There's a puncture wound on his neck. Someone poisoned him."

Image I reach out tentatively, but Gurski grabs my hand.

Image "What are you doing?"

Image "Oh. Um..."

Image He frowns and coughs.

Image

Image He sighs, stands, and turns around. Did he just..? No time to dwell on that. I touch the body with the back of my hand, and Nathan's final memory floods into me. My heart is pounding, but it hurts. My chest feels tight, and I can't breathe. I'm sweating... Everything is so cold... My vision is starting to blur, but I can make out a slender figure standing over me. I stare at the person's face and her features slowly come into focus.

Image

Image She approaches me and kneels next to the couch. Chance leans over me and whispers gently in my ear.

Image
Image

Image She giggles.

Image

Image I gasp and open my eyes.

Image

Image "What's wrong?"

Image "It was Chance. She killed him."

Image Gurski nods, not bothering to question how I know this.

Image "But how did she know we were onto Nathan?"

Image "The only other person who knew was Shawn..."

Image My thought is cut off short by my phone vibrating. I snatch it up and look at the screen. It's a message from Aki!

Image
Image

Image "What's going on?"

Image "Aki says Shawn and Chance just left campus."

Image "Then they ARE working together."

Image He sighs and rubs the side of his head.

Image "We can't catch up to them, now."

Image He scans the body again, and pauses when he sees Nathan's clenched fist.

Image "Hang on..."

Image He pulls a pen from his pocket and pokes Nathan's hand. Nathan's fist uncurls to reveal a crumpled card covered with brightly colored print.

Image

Image She kneels beside it and picks it up. I glance at Detective Gurski, but he doesn't seem concerned by her touching it.

Image

Image "To what?"

Image She holds it up.

Image "Yamazaki Ryokan."

Image "That resort up north? Isn't that..?"

Image

Image "Do you think someone's leaving a message for you?"

Image "It's more than that. It's an invitation."

Image I sigh.

  • The last non-true ending is the twins ending, to get this ending you need to have above a friendship score of at least forty six points with Aki and Naoki. Although Aki and Naoki have separate friendship points, their points are combined for the ending checks. We had a score of forty two in our playthrough. In addition, to get the twins ending, you also need a trust score of at least thirty four with Jupiter, and confess to her that Johansen was murdered. We had a trust score of thirty three with Jupiter.
Image

  • The extra for Gurski's ending is a Kangai charm attached to the phone.
Image

  • Asking Aaron not take so many photos gets you five points with Naoki. Asking whether photography is Aaron's hobby gives you four trust points with Aaron.
Image "Could you not take quite so many? I'm kind of uncomfortable with it."

Image Aaron sticks his tongue out at me.

Image "Ah, you'll get used to it eventually. Everyone does."

Image "Just... try to take fewer, if you can."

Image "No promises, but I'll see what I can do."

Image Naoki smiles gratefully at me and nods his head once.

Image

  • Selecting the first option here gives you five trust points with Jupiter. The second option gives you five trust points with David, and the third option gives you five trust points with Nathan. I'm not sure why you can raise Aaron, David and Nathan's trust scores – unlike Jisei and Kansei there aren't any trust locked scenes in Yousei – aside from the trust requirement with Jupiter for the twins ending, trust scores have no bearing on anything.

On the topic of friendship and trust points, the starting values for everyone is as follows – Li Mei, twenty friendship points, Aki and Naoki both start with fifteen friendship points and Gurski starts with ten friendship points. You can't increase or decrease Li Mei's friendship points, probably due to her ending being the default. Jupiter, Aaron, David, Shawn, Nathan and Chance all have a base trust score of fifteen.
Image

  • Admitting to previously seeing the video of the research theft in Auten's files gives you three trust points with Jupiter.
Image

  • Lying about being in the coffee shop at the time of the theft loses you three trust points with Jupiter.

Image

  • Reiterating that Kangai is not the person in the video loses two trust points with Jupiter. However, apologising and offering to help gives you three trust points.
Image

  • Admitting that Johansen is dead gives you seven trust points. Lying doesn't lose you any trust points, despite Jupiter calling Kangai out for lying to her when he admits to having seen the body. That said, lying to Jupiter here will still lock you out of the twins ending, since it's not possible to get more than thirty three trust points with her if you miss out on the seven points for admitting the truth.
Image

  • Waiting in the hall gets five friendship points with Aki, going back into the room gets five points with Naoki. Choosing Naoki leads to another question that, depending on how you answer, can lead to another five friendship points with Naoki.
Image "I'll be in my room, then."

Image Aki nods, and she guides Li Mei down the hall to their room.

Image

Image Aaron lies in his bed, wrapped tightly in blankets. His breathing is heavy and labored, but he's clearly asleep. Naoki is sitting up in the bed with the covers pulled around him.

Image "Are you okay?"

Image "I'm fine..."

Image "Leave the lying to your sister. You're terrible at it."

Image "Aki doesn't lie."

Image "Right. She just tells misleading truths."

Image "She says what she has to."

Image He glares at me.

Image "Okay, this conversation isn't going so well. I didn't mean to come in and start an argument or anything."

Image Naoki sighs and leans back.

Image "I'm sorry."

Image "Wait, why are YOU apologizing?"

Image "Because I feel bad."

Image "About what? It's not like this is your fault."

Image "I shouldn't have gone alone."

Image "What happened, anyway?"

Image Naoki glances at Aaron's sleeping figure. He sighs and lowers his voice.

Image "It's easiest to tell people I have a perfect memory, but it doesn't work the way you'd think. I don't look at a book and memorize all the words."

Image "Instead, I remember what it was like to read the book. I remember the way each page turn feels, the warmth of the room, and what I think and feel as I read it. I memorize all of my experiences, and they stay in my mind forever, as clear as the day I first experienced them."

Image He draws his knees up under his chin.

Image "I won't just remember what happened today. I'll relive it all. The smell of the blood. The pounding of my heart. It's a part of me that I'll never be able to erase."

Image He pauses to take a shaky breath.

Image "It sort of pounds inside my head every day, as if I'm still experiencing it. It takes a little time for me to get used to it, but I'll live."

Image "I'm sorry. I didn't know..."

Image "It's okay. I didn't expect you to."

Image He forces a smile.

Image "Besides, I've had worse."

Image "That doesn't make me feel better at all. In fact, I think that makes me feel worse."

Image Naoki laughs sadly.

Image "That's why Aki tries to keep me away from anything too traumatic."

Image "I just didn't want to inconvenience her..."

Image

  • The first option gives you the five friendship points I mentioned earlier.
Image "It's not an inconvenience if she loves you."

Image "I know, but it won't stop me from feeling guilty about it."

Image "Listen, dude. I don't know what you've been through or the sort of baggage you've got, but it's obvious Aki cares about you."

Image "And if you keep feeling guilty about it, then you're pushing her away. It's like saying you don't want her to love you."

Image "But that's not true at all!"

Image "Then don't think of yourself as a burden. Find a way to pay her back. Take care of her too. Make it an equal relationship."

Image He smiles sadly.

Image "I know if I stay like this, it'll be harder on both of us. I just..."

Image He sighs and puts his hand to his head.

Image "I'm sorry, I don't know if I can stay up much longer. Is it okay if I get some rest?"

Image "Oh, um... sure."

Image

Image "He, uh... looks..."

Image She smiles a weary smile.

Image "We've weathered worse."

Image "Yeah, he said the same thing. I really don't think that makes things any better."

Image "Do you have a moment to talk about what happened earlier?"

Image "Yeah. I'm sorry."

Image "Likewise. I expected you to know things you were never told."

Image "Well, I know now..."

Image "Naoki told you?"

Image "About how his kansei works? Yeah."

Image "He's got some pretty dark memories, you know. Our mother died during childbirth, and our father wound up blaming us for it."

Image She sighs.

Image "It's not a part of our history I'm especially thrilled to think about."

Image She seats herself on the couch and leans back with a heavy sigh.

Image "He really means a lot to you, doesn't he?"

Image "He's my little brother. I'd raze the world to the ground if I knew it would keep him safe."

Image She sighs.

Image "I hope I don't sound crazy. It's kind of a protective older sibling thing."

Image "I know. I'm the same."

Image Aki regards me with a curious glint in her eye.

Image "You?"

Image "I have - well, I had a sister."

Image Her expression softens.

Image "Oh. I'm sorry."

Image "You don't have to apologize. It's not your fault."

Image "What was she like? If you don't mind my asking..."

Image "We grew up in the same foster home. We weren't related by blood, but it didn't matter."

Image I pause for a moment to pick my words. I haven't spoken about her in so long...

Image "She got sick a lot, so she didn't spend much time with the other kids. And I'm not exactly a social person."

Image I smirk.

Image "Like you couldn't tell."

Image "I had a guess."

Image "I avoided the others as much as I could, but she wouldn't leave me alone."

Image "She always tried to make me happy, and I hated it."

Image Aki raises an eyebrow.

Image "Hey, don't judge. Sometimes you just wanna be angry at the world for no reason."

Image "She never gave up on me, though. I still don't know why she'd care about someone like me. Maybe she felt a kinship because neither of us knew who our parents were. Maybe the other kids were too loud for her. All I know is that she was family. She always saw the positive side of things. I was a real pessimist back then."

Image "Unlike now?"

Image I laugh ruefully.

Image "I was worse back then, if you can believe that."

Image

Image "We'd argue about everything, then stand up for each other when the other kids tried to pick fights. Everyone else thought it was weird. We used to have these daydreams where our parents would show up one day, and we'd discover we really were related, and we'd laugh at everyone for doubting us."

Image I tug at a strand of my hair.

Image "I even dyed my hair to match hers. Wanted to look the same. Still do. Once a year on her birthday."

Image I shake my head.

Image "It sounds so stupid when I say it out loud."

Image "It doesn't sound stupid at all. You wanted to connect. There's nothing wrong with that."

Image "But it was a fantasy. A child's dream."

Image "You still love her. That's not a fantasy. Family isn't about blood or hair color. You're her brother."

Image "I was her brother."

Image "You still are."

Image "But she's gone."

Image

Image Aki states it so simply, I'm at a loss as to how to respond. She straightens up and brushes off a bit of imaginary dust from her shirt.

Image "Come on."

Image "What?"

Image "Older siblings unite?"

Image She offers me her hand. I laugh and grasp her hand in mine.

Image "Sure. Older siblings unite."

Image The two of us stare at the ceiling for a few silent moments before Aki breaks the silence.

Image "You can ask, you know."

Image "What?"

Image "About today. Looks like your first time having a blood reaction."

Image "You mean when I woke up in that corpse?"

Image "Yeah, basically."

Image "You know what happened to me? Li Mei said it had something to do with blood."

Image "Kansei are activated by touch, but if you come into contact with blood, the effect is amplified."

Image "I don't see how reliving someone's death can be amplified as taking over their dead body."

Image Aki chuckles, but there's no mirth in her voice.

Image "Well, when you relive a death, it's like you're inside their mind. So for the blood reaction version it makes sense that you fill their body entirely."

Image I frown.

Image "I don't like it very much."

Image "Yeah, it's pretty unsettling if you think about it."

Image I shudder.

Image "Then maybe I shouldn't think about it."

Image "All things considered, I'm surprised this has never happened to you before."

Image "I know it's hard to believe, but I don't go around touching corpses all the time."

Image She stares at my head intently.

Image "I can tell. You don't even have a single white hair."

Image "What?"

Image

Image "In case you didn't notice."

Image She laughs and curls a lock of her white hair around her finger.

Image "So you got that white hair from your kansei?"

Image "Well, not exactly. I absorbed all of this from Naoki."

Image "Absorbed?"

Image "I can project the thoughts of anyone I touch, but I can also choose which thoughts I project. I can amplify some and filter out others. Whenever Naoki's memories overwhelm him, I hold his hand and filter his thoughts. I strengthen the good memories and mute the bad ones."

Image "But in doing so, you undergo the same stress he does."

Image "It's a small price to pay."

Image She inspects the white strands of hair entwined around her fingers.

Image "Lately, I've been doing it for Li Mei, too. She's in a lot of turmoil, but she's working through it."

Image Aki extends her hand toward me.

Image "I can do it for you, too."

Image I shake my head.

Image "No. I'd rather not burden you any more."

Image "It's an offer, not a burden."

Image I run my fingers through my hair.

Image "Maybe after I get some white hair of my own."

Image Aki shrugs.

Image "It's your choice."

Image She stands and stretches.

Image "Go to sleep, Kan. I get the feeling that tomorrow is going to be a rough day."

Image "You don't have to tell me twice."

Image

Image I crawl into my sleeping bag and shut my eyes, but my dreams are filled with frantic memories. I see police rushing into the room. My sisters are both crying.

Image

Image Who am I? What am I looking at? It must be just the shock. Or the adrenaline. I try to shut my eyes even tighter, but the images won't go away.

Image
Image

Image I sigh and hold my head in my hands, trying to push away the thoughts, but something in the back of my mind keeps pushing itself forward. I lean against the wall and stare at the ceiling, listening to the sound of Aaron's labored snores mixed with Naoki's soft breathing. The sound of life. The sound I hated in that crowded house, then missed so dearly after it faded away.

Image

Image Naoki has survived all this time. Li Mei manages to stand up under it somehow. I can do it, too. I will do it. Strengthened by my new resolve, I allow myself to fade back into my nightly battle.

Image

  • Admitting that Johansen was murdered is worth seven trust points, and is a requirement for the twins ending.
Image "It looked like he was killed on purpose."

Image "Murder?"

Image "W-well... yeah. Maybe. I mean, it could have been an accident."

Image "Not likely. He was a careful man, and had no reason to be in the bell tower in the first place. This all seems very deliberate. I'm inclined to agree with your assessment."

Image She sighs and crosses her arms across her chest.

Image

  • Asking Jupiter about anyone who would want Johansen dead after admitting Johansen was killed.
Image "So you really don't think it was an accident, then."

Image "Honestly, I don't know what to think. It's entirely possible that this was an accident."

Image "Maybe a heart attack. His heart is still experimental, after all."

Image "He had a fake heart?"

Image "Partially. It was built from a reproduction of his own tissue, but some parts were manufactured."

Image "Wasn't Auten Engineering working on something like that?"

Image "They're the ones funding most of our research."

Image "William Auten donated a lot of money to this school. I think he cared a lot for his alma mater."

Image "The heart was still in testing stages, but Dr. Johansen's heart was in such a bad state, he decided to take the risk."

Image "As strange as the circumstances of his death are, I'm hard pressed to think of anyone who would want to kill him."

Image

  • Talking to Naoki about his father if you choose to talk to Naoki the night after the murder leads to some alternative dialogue.
Image "Aki said you guys had a rough time with your father..."

Image "That's putting it lightly."

Image "Sorry... I didn't mean to bring up any bad memories..."

Image "You can't bring up any memories. They're always in my mind."

Image "Yeah... I'm sorry..."

Image "It's not your fault. I simply am who I am."

Image "When our mother died, our father didn't handle it too well. He took to drinking, and eventually it was all he knew how to do. All that pent up rage of his had to go somewhere..."

Image "And you bore the brunt of it?"

Image "I did. At least until Aki discovered her kansei."

Image "She wasn't strong enough to stop him, but she managed to redirect his anger."

Image "Redirect it? To whom?"

Image "Who else was there?"

Image "I'm so sorry..."

Image "Aki's proud. She tries to carry the weight of everyone on her own shoulders. Even back then, she never wanted to accept help from anyone."

Image

  • Yousei doesn't directly call attention to it, but despite how close they are, Naoki doesn't tell Aki everything – Aki thinks the teacher noticed the abuse the twins suffered on her own.
Image "The teacher called Child Protective Services, but they wouldn't let us stay together."

Image "So we ran away."

Image "Just like that?"

Image "Of course. Wouldn't you have done the same thing?"

Image "Yeah... I think I would."

Image "Hey... mind if I ask you something?"

Image "Go ahead."

Image "Why are you telling me this? It's kind of a personal story, isn't it?"

Image "Isn't it obvious? It's because you're family."

Image "What?"

Image "You're living with us now, aren't you?"

Image "Well, yeah, but I didn't think..."

Image "You don't plan on staying with us?"

Image "I... I don't know. I hadn't really thought about it."

Image "Well, you should."

Image "Aki and I thought we'd be running forever. Same goes for Li Mei. But it turns out we like having a home and a family. It's less lonely."

Image

  • Questioning Jupiter also results in a different response after admitting Johansen was murdered.
Image "Where were you yesterday morning between 10:00 and 11:00?"

Image "Here at the lab. Why?"

Image "Just curious."

Image "And by curious, you mean I'm a suspect."

Image "Everyone is."

Image "That's fair. Random killings are more unlikely, after all."

Image "Yeah..."

Image

  • Lying to Gurski about the SD card. This isn't needed for the twins ending, as telling Jupiter the truth about Johansen's death locks out Gurski's ending.
Image "It's just a hunch."

Image "You sure have a lot of these "hunches." Are you sure it's not related to that thing I saw you slip in your pocket at Mr. Auten's place?"

Image "Eheh... you noticed."

Image "I'm good at noticing."

  • This doesn't make sense – as Gurski himself says if Kangai does admit to taking something from Auten's house, Kangai found and put the SD card in his pocket right before “that mess with Kevin”. Kevin tried to escape via the museum; not realising that Kangai and Li Mei were there because the SD card was intentionally placed in the camera blind spot – Gurski was off somewhere else in the house at that time and doesn't show up until after Kevin takes Li Mei hostage.

  • New text from Gurski:

Image You're going to have to be honest with me eventually. I'm on your side.
Image

  • Kangai tells Aki and Naoki that they're to interrogate David, while Kangai questions Jupiter. Last time, Aki and Naoki went ahead with that plan without question, but this time...
Image

Image "What? Are you sure?"

Image "Why not? We're a team, right? Besides, Naoki's good at detecting lies. It might be useful. We can talk to David later."

Image "Fine. I guess it couldn't hurt. Let's make this quick."

Image "If you say so. Race you."

Image Aki drops into a flat out run before I can process her challenge.

Image "A-again?"

Image Naoki takes chase, and I begrudgingly follow. The twins outdistance me easily, but I force myself to keep running.

Image

Image "Keep up, Kangai!"

Image Naoki leaps past her and waves his card at the reader.

Image "Haha!"

Image He grabs the handle and throws the door open.

Image "H-hey!"

Image Aki punches him playfully and he returns the gesture. I take the moment to put in an extra burst of speed into my steps, racing through the open door past the two of them.

Image

Image I taunt over my shoulder as I speed off towards the lab.

Image

Image "Ay! What's going on?"

Image Aki tries to lean casually against a counter, but the effect is marred by her gasps for air.

Image "Oh, nothing. We just felt like running."

Image "No, YOU just felt like running. I was all for walking..."

Image "Don't tell me you didn't have fun."

Image "I deny all allegations."

Image "That still doesn't explain what's going on."

Image "We had something we wanted to ask. Kan?"

Image "Oh, um. Right."

Image "Have you ever used Nathan's ID card to log in?"

Image "You mean that childish game they play, swapping cards with each other?"

Image "No. I do not partake in it."

Image I notice the twins exchanging glances with each other.

Image "So... you know about their system?"

Image "They think they can, how is it said... defeat the system?"

Image "I know they do not always arrive on time, but it is wiser to let them believe they are winning. Otherwise, they may devise a trick even harder to keep track of."

Image "That makes sense."

Image "And... I don't suppose you come here to work late?"

Image "Of course I work late. You know that."

Image "How late?"

Image "Maybe 10:00 or 11:00. Why do you want to know?"

Image "Someone's been logging in every other week. Late. Like, after midnight late."

Image "Yes, Nathan. I brought that to Dr. Johansen's attention."

  • Asking Aki to help with the suspension notice gets seven friendship points with Aki.
Image "Is that what this is about?"

Image "We're not sure. But we think the person was selling off information. Maybe to Western?"

Image "I find that difficult to believe."

Image "Then maybe it's something else. Did Dr. Johansen have anything else he was working on?"

Image "Oh. That was just a hypothesis more than anything else. It wasn't a real project."

Image "Mind telling us what it was, anyway? We're curious."

Image "Well, I suppose it couldn't hurt."

Image
Image
Image
Image

Image "He wanted to make magic people? That doesn't sound scientific."

Image "Too often we think that the scientific advances of today give us reason to ignore ancient observation. But the people of old still charted the stars and built pyramids. They possessed the ability to observe and record just as we do."

Image "We cannot dismiss the account of superhuman feats recorded across centuries and continents. Instead, we should seek to find the cause of these. Can we recreate or observe them ourselves? He doesn't believe in people with special powers. He believes it is a possibility that must be explored."

Image "Is it not scientific to attempt to observe what others have, rather than dismiss them without testing?"

Image Jupiter shrugs.

Image "Of course, even this is little more than speculation. We don't have enough information to try to recreate anything."

Image Jupiter leans over her laptop and clicks through a few folders.

Image "He has some old notes on it, if you're interested. They're from his private collection, but it should be fine."

Image Before any of us can respond, the door bursts open and Detective Gurski strides in. He looks angry.

Image

Image "What? I'm sorry, Officer. I didn't mean to do anything wrong."

Image "What are you doing here?"

Image "Wondering the same of you. I thought I told you to talk to David."

Image "We were going to. We just wanted to help Kan out."

Image "We may have found a lead. Dr. Johansen had another project he was working on."

Image "Just because the guy's dead doesn't mean you can poke around in his stuff."

Image "There's no harm in it. He always wanted his work made public when he passed away. He hoped that someone else would be able to pick it up where he left off."

Image "So it's fine!"

Image "You're not even supposed to be here!"

Image Gurski turns and forcefully herds us toward the hallway.

Image "I'm taking you off this case."

Image "Why?"

Image "Because you're not listening to me. I cut you guys a lot of slack, but you can't just do whatever you feel like.”

Image

Image Gurski motions for Jupiter to leave.

Image "Everyone out. That includes you."

Image "But I have work to do!"

Image "And I'm declaring this a crime scene."

Image "He didn't die here!"

Image "But some of his work is here, and you've already said it might be evidence. It was a mistake for me to let it get this far."

Image Detective Gurski turns to Jupiter.

Image "I'm afraid I'm going to have to ask you to lock down the building."

Image "I can do that, but do you really think this is necessary?"

Image "I'm not taking any risks."

Image

Image "Thank you, Miss Celedon. I'm sorry to take you from your work like this, but I promise it won't be long."

Image "As for the rest of you, go home."

Image "But-"

Image "No arguments. Get Li Mei and go straight back to the apartment."

Image Aki glares at him.

Image "I'll tell Schulz about this."

Image "I don't care. Just go home."

Image "Fine! Good luck solving this on your own!"

Image Aki stalks off, and Naoki follows after her. With a final confused glance over my shoulder, I follow suit. I can feel Detective Gurski's angry gaze boring into my back as we leave.

Image

Image "I want to go back."

Image "Are you kidding? Gurski's gonna be waiting right there!"

Image "Then we sneak in through the side."

Image "Isn't the door locked?"

Image "Then we find a way around it."

Image "Oh yeah? Like what?"

Image "Like her."

Image Aki casually points over my shoulder. I turn around to see Li Mei.

Image "Um..."

Image "That was quick. We need to get inside. Think you can handle it?"

Image Li Mei scans the building and nods once. Aki grins.

Image "I knew we could count on you."

Image

Image "Why are we here?"

Image Li Mei points at the fire escape.

Image "What, really?"

Image "It's a good choice. The fire escape isn't locked by the security system, because it needs to be opened no matter what the circumstances are."

Image Li Mei sizes up the ladder on the side of the building.

Image "It looks like the ladder's rusted in place."

Image With a graceful leap, Li Mei grabs the bottom rung of the ladder and pulls on it. It groans for a brief moment before sliding down with an unhappy squeal.

Image

Image Li Mei climbs the ladder swiftly and pauses in front of the door.

Image "But it's still got a lock of some sort, doesn't it?"

Image "Sure there's a manual one, but it shouldn't be a problem."

Image "Really?"

Image Li Mei curls her fingers into the space between the door and the frame, and gives the door a sharp tug. The door swings open suddenly with the sound of a harsh, metallic snap.

Image "Is there something you guys aren't telling me?"

Image "Probably."

Image Aki nods at Li Mei.

Image "See you at the back door."

Image Li Mei nods and slips into the building silently.

Image "What just happened?"

Image "She opened the door. Obviously. Let's go."

Image

Image Aki glances around quickly before affecting a casual pose. She turns to me and frowns.

Image "Don't look so suspicious."

Image "We're kind of breaking in after Gurski told us not to..."

Image "He's our handler, not our boss. Besides, aren't you even a little bit curious about what all the secrecy has been about?"

Image "Well..."

Image "You have to admit, it IS rather suspicious. He's stopping us from doing our job."

Image I don't want to admit he's right, but Gurski's attitude during this case has me on edge too. The door swings open and Li Mei pokes her head out.

Image "Good work!"

Image Aki grabs the door's handle and swings it open with a flourish.

Image

Image The four of us hurry to the lab, and Aki grabs the laptop sitting on the counter.

Image "Bingo. She's still logged in."

Image "Isn't that a security risk?"

Image "There are so many locks on the outside, sometimes people get complacent about locking up what's inside."

Image She grins.

Image "Especially if I distract them on the way out."

Image "You were planning to look at these files all this time?"

Image "I didn't know if I'd get the chance, but I figured it couldn't hurt to prepare for the option."

Image "Sometimes you scare me."

Image "I know."

Image Aki scrolls through the files quickly, looking for something that might catch her eye.

Image "Hm... see anything?"

Image "Wait. There!"

Image "What?"

Image I point to one of the folders.

Image

Image Aki double-clicks on the folder, and a list of files flashes onto the screen. The four of us crowd around the computer as Aki opens the first file.

Image "A project designed to unlock latent potential?"

Image "That's what Dr. Johansen was talking about."

Image "Looks like it was more than a hypothesis. He didn't tell Jupiter the whole story."

Image
Image

Image "If they still had his blood today, imagine what they could do with it!"

Image "I think that's exactly what they were aiming for."

Image Naoki's eyes dart back and forth across the screen.

Image "They were trying to replicate Dragon's Blood?"

Image "I've seen these before."

Image "Where?"

Image

Image "But that proves this was Auten's project! We found it!"

Image "It was more than talk. They actually tried to do it!"

Image "Did they ever manage to recreate this Dragon's Blood?"

Image "Doesn't look like it, but..."

Image Naoki catches his breath and his hand falls limp.

Image "What? What's wrong?"

Image "They were looking into alternative solutions."

Image

Image "Synthetic didn't work, so they looked for a way to make it naturally."

Image "The first study was a failure. Of the twenty men they worked with, none had children who exhibited any traits of Dragon's Blood. Most of them passed away years later, all from causes eventually linked to the study. But in those years, they tried again. With women..."

Image Naoki swallows and shakes his head.

Image

Image "H-how did you know?"

Image "Marissa was researching it when we met. She said one of the women-"

Image

Image Detective Gurski stands in the doorway. I can't tell if he's angry or... scared? He strides across the room and reaches for Aki's shoulder.

Image "I told you that you're off the case!"

Image Aki pulls away from him.

Image "But we found Johansen's old research! This could be the key we need to find the killer!"

Image "It's not important anymore. Naoki! Close the computer and leave now."

Image Detective Gurki's voice is laced with anger. He's definitely not in the mood to debate, but Naoki sits frozen at the computer.

Image "Chie..."

Image

Image Naoki's voice is barely a whisper. He breathes in slowly and his chest shudders.

Image "Chie Mizutani..."

Image Aki spins around to face her brother.

Image "Mom?"

Image
Image
Image

Image Aki's face hardens and her eyes turn dark.

Image "Success?"

Image Her voice shakes, and I see her slowly clench and unclench her fists.

Image "Aki..."

Image Aki's eyes meet his, and I see a sudden light of recognition.

Image

Image "I'm sorry, I just-"

Image "You KNEW!"

Image Mikolaj looks away from her and nods once.

Image "I knew."

Image "How?"

Image "I stumbled on the report in a place I wasn't supposed to be."

Image He doesn't bother to suppress a bitter smile.

Image "You and I are both much too eager to learn things we're not supposed to know."

Image Aki doesn't respond.

Image "After that, I was assigned to Edgewater. To your case. I'm the only one who knows what you two are."

Image "And what, exactly, are we?"

Image "Children unfairly robbed of a parent. Adults thrust into a world without a lifeline. Human beings."

Image Aki doesn't make any effort to hide the bitterness in her voice.

Image "Why didn't you tell us?"

Image "I wasn't allowed to. They would have taken me away if I did. I didn't..."

Image Gurski stops and runs his fingers through his hair as he searches for the right words.

Image

Image "We still deserved to know. We could have kept it a secret. Why didn't you trust us?"

Image "Because - I don't know."

Image "You had no right."

Image "I had no choice!"

Image

Image Naoki stands and faces Detective Gurski. His eyes are hardened.

Image "You had a choice, and you chose not to. Did you think you were protecting us? Did you think we'd feel better spending life thinking our mother died because of us?"

Image "But she didn't!"

Image "He hurt us!"

Image Naoki lets out a scream, and his face twists up in a mixture of fury and guilt.

Image "He hurt us and we thought we deserved it."

Image His body shakes and he takes a deep breath to steady his voice.

Image

Image Aki exhales slowly and looks Gurski in the eye.

Image "Leave."

Image "I can't let you stay here."

Image Gurski takes a step towards Aki, but Li Mei intercepts.

Image "No."

Image "Please... I can explain."

Image "Now's really not the time."

Image I stand beside Li Mei and look Gurski in the eyes.

Image "You're going to make it worse if you stay."

Image With a frustrated scowl, Detective Gurski turns and walks to the doorway. He pauses at the door and whispers under his breath.

Image "It wasn't supposed to happen this way."

Image As soon as he shuts the door, Aki's hands relax. A series of red marks appear on the palm of her hand, perfectly matching the curve of her nails. Li Mei and I stand, unmoving. Neither of us is sure what to say. I open my mouth, but no words come. Should I even say anything at all?

Image

Image Aki wraps a comforting arm over Naoki's shoulder with a practiced ease. He mirrors the gesture, and the two sob quietly into each others shoulders. In the harsh glare of the artificial lighting, they look more real and honest than I've ever seen them. The girl forced to grow up too soon, desperately trying to protect the innocence of a boy plagued by demons. The brother and sister lost in an ocean with only the other to cling to. Something I understand.

  • For the true ending, we have to go along with the fake alibi Chance is trying to provide for Kangai.
Image "Yeah. I was at the coffee shop."

Image "That's not possible! Our cameras caught you!"

Image "Well, your cameras are wrong. I know what I saw."

Image Chance stomps her foot on the ground, as if to prove a point. Jupiter doesn't seem impressed.

Image "There's no need for your theatrics, Bertha."

Image Chance flinches at the mention of her birth name. Looks like these two don't get along very well. I'm not sure I want to know the history.

Image "Officer, you can't trust the testimony of a witness who is clearly biased towards the accused!"

Image Whoa. I don't know if she's biased towards me, but it is weird that she'd go out of her way to help me out of this situation. Gurski looks at me with a critical eye. I turn my head to avoid his gaze.

  • Going along with Chance locks you out of Gurski's ending, as by doing so, you miss out on five friendship points with Gurski. While going along with Chance does also cost you three trust points with Jupiter, it's still possible to meet the thirty four trust points required for the twins ending. As twins has an earlier cut off point than the true ending, twins takes priority if you meet the requirements for both endings. On a semi-related note, the getting the twins ending unlocks Gurski's glasses.

Image I don't know why she's so interested in me, but it's making me feel uncomfortable. And now she's trying to participate in the investigation? I don't want to share any information with her, but at the same time... keeping her close might be a good idea.

Image

  • If you refuse to go along with Chance's fake alibi, Kangai will automatically refuse to work with Chance. To get the true ending, you need to agree here.
Image "Sure. I guess having extra help couldn't hurt."

Image "Yaaaay! We're going to have so much fun!"

Image "There's nothing fun about someone dying - accident or not."

Image

  • When Kangai and Li Mei meet David and Nathan in the cafeteria after the murder, it triggers a flag (dinner_natdav) for the “What do you think of Nathan and David” question. There is an another flag (dinner_shawn) that can't be triggered, but would have added the question to “So... what do you think of Shawn and Chance?”
Image "So what do you think of Shawn and Chance?"

Image "Shawn is not happy. But he carries little anger. Instead... there is sadness. Smallness."

Image "Smallness?"

Image "As if the world has taken ahold of him, and he feels he is drowning."

Image Wow. He looks like he could be the spokesperson for the happiest place on earth.

Image "He looked pretty happy last night."

Image Li Mei shakes her head decisively.

Image "When Chance appeared, he changed. He had hope, but it was mixed with fear. And he did not want to fail."

Image "And what about Chance?"

Image "She is happy, but I cannot understand it."

Image "What do you mean?"

Image "When Aki is happy, I feel warm. When Naoki is happy, I feel warm. But her happiness is not warm.”

Image Li Mei pauses, searching for the words she wants.

Image "She does not love Shawn. That much I know. I do not like her."

Image

  • After Jupiter locks Kangai out of the lab while she visits Aaron, Kangai decides to seek help with breaking into the lab to check the printer from someone other than Aki.
Image I eye the security pad. Would be nice to know the code... Chance works in the lab, right? She must know! Ugh... I'm not too thrilled about playing into her detective and assistant fantasy, but it looks like this might work in my favor.

Image

Image Thankfully, most prying eyes are focused on the bright yellow police tape of the bell tower nearby. Ah, morbid curiosity. You never fail.

Image

Image If at all possible, I'd rather not let anyone know what I'm doing.

Image

Image "Um... I kind of need your help with something."

Image "I knew it! We're going to solve a mystery!"

Image "Don't get so excited. I just need you to unlock the lab for me."

Image "Oooh! What are you looking for?"

Image "I'm kind of short on time right now. Let's get going."

Image "No!"

Image "No?"

Image "We're supposed to be partners. You tell me what you're looking for!"

Image "Chance, we don't have time..."

Image "You're right. So you'd better hurry up and tell me."

Image "Or you could just leave now, and I can tell Jupiter you tried to sneak into the lab while she was gone."

Image "Fine. I promise I'll tell you after I get it."

Image "I'm going to hold you to that."

Image "Right, right. Let's go."

Image

Image "I expect you'll hold to our bargain."

Image "Otherwise..."

Image "I get it."

Image
Image

  • It's optional, but you can go back to Chance after Kangai finds the suspension notice to tell her what Kangai found.
Image "Hello, Mr. Detective!"

Image "You seem cheerful."

Image "Naturally! Tell me what sort of secret thing you discovered in the lab!"

Image I sigh.

Image "You don't have to, but..."

Image "Yeah, I know."

Image "So spill it already!"

Image "I found a message from Dr. Johansen telling someone they're going to be expelled."

Image "Ooh! Who is it?"

Image "David."

Image "Oh, dear! But he seems so nice!"

Image "Hey, that doesn't mean he did it. You can't jump to conclusions like that."

Image "Oh, of course not!"

Image "It's just circumstantial, right? But it sure looks bad for David!"

  • I'm assuming this may be a typo / wrong character name used, since we know the ID belongs to Nathan, and given that Chance and David used to date, and Chance ended up throwing coffee in David's face, Chance's “But he seems so nice!” line seems a bit out of place for David, but not so much for Nathan.

Image

  • If you have a good relationship with the twins, but not with Jupiter, the twins will still accompany Kangai for Jupiter's final questioning, however, although Jupiter is willing to share Johansen's theory on people with extrahuman abilities, she won't show Kangai and twins the notes Johansen left.
Image "I apologize, but I have a class I must teach soon. I need to close the lab while I'm gone."

Image

Image "I'll be back in a few hours. We can talk more at that time."

Image "Well... David next, then?"

Image "Uh, sure."

Image
Image

Image David is still at one of the tables, but Nathan is nowhere to be seen. Aki leans in and whispers in my ear.

Image "Twenty bucks says I can get him to talk without using my kansei once."

Image "How can I even verify that?"

Image She blinks, surprised.

Image "You can't tell when I'm using it? Your sensitivity is lower than I thought..."

Image "Shockingly, I don't spend a lot of time honing my ability to experience death."

Image "Next time, then."

Image She skips past me and calls out to David.

Image "Hey, David! Where's Nathan?"

Image "Yo, Haru. He's out teaching a class - something I've gotta do in a few. If you want something, make it fast."

Image "Oh, well if you're in a hurry, that's not a problem."

Image Aki points at one of the nearby shelves.

Image "I just need you to help me find something."

Image "You mean like a book? I guess I can help?"

Image As soon as Aki leads David to the shelf, Naoki hurries to the table and begins to rifle through David's bag. It's... potentially the least smooth thing I've ever seen him do.

Image "Hey!"

Image David marches toward Naoki, fists clenched.

Image "What are you doing!?"

Image Naoki jerks back, accidentally spilling the contents of David's bag across the floor.

Image "Looking for something?"

Image "No, of course not. I just... tripped."

Image "Yeah, right. You were trying to take my stuff!"

Image Aki places a hand on David's shoulder and pulls him back.

Image "I-it was just an accident!"

Image The twins are handling this with all the grace of a duck doing the tango. What's wrong with them? David spins on Aki.

Image "Nice try! You were trying to distract me while he stole my stuff!"

Image "I told you! It was just an accident!"

Image David crosses his arms.

Image "Tell it to the cops. I'm calling the police."

Image "No! Please don't. You got us, okay? Just... what do you want?"

Image "Let's start with you two telling me why you're trying to steal my stuff."

Image Naoki hangs his head, defeated.

Image "I was looking for money..."

Image "We sneak onto campuses like this all the time. Students are less likely to report a theft."

Image "Nice try. But you can't just sneak into the prospective student program."

Image "Care to try again?"

Image "Fine..."

Image "Western University hired us to try to steal your research."

Image "They handled all the details, like getting us into the accepted student register."

Image "So you wanted to steal my notes?"

Image "Um... your ID card, actually..."

Image "We were planning to sneak into the lab later on."

Image "Those guys at Western are even more desperate than I thought."

Image "You go back to whoever hired you and tell them not to bother. They'll never get their hands on our research."

Image "We're really sorry. It was just a job. No hard feelings, you know?"

Image "Is there anything we can do to pretend this never happened?"

Image "I don't know... that's a pretty big secret to keep."

Image

Image Naoki lets out a low whistle.

Image "Wow, he really is in it for the money, isn't he?"

Image "I wonder what would happen if we told Jupiter that he's willing to take part in a coverup for some cash?"

Image "What? You wouldn't!"

Image "If you tell her anything, I'll tell that cop you tried to steal from me."

Image "It won't do you any good. We work with him."

Image "What? But-"

Image "We're not from Western. There's been a leak, and Dr. Johansen asked us to look into it."

Image "What sort of leak?"

Image "Someone's been sneaking into the lab late at night and logging in using Nathan's ID card. Dr. Johansen was afraid that this person was selling off information to Western."

Image "What are you talking about? He knows that was-"

Image David stops mid-sentence.

Image "Knows what?"

Image "Nothing."

Image "I'd like to remind you that you were willing to accept a bribe from a rival school."

Image "Fine, fine. It was me."

Image "What?"

Image "I'm the one who used Nathan's card. We switch off cards every day. So every other week, I'd sneak out while Aaron was away at his card game."

Image

Image "Oh..."

Image "Wouldn't have called that one, actually."

Image "Johansen knows about it. He caught me like last month or something."

Image "And he didn't kick you out?"

Image "He gave me a second chance, because he's a decent person."

Image "So you didn't, say, kill him to keep him from expelling you?"

Image "Are you jaggin'? Who kills a guy over something like that!?"

Image "You've got to be pretty messed up to kill someone like Dr. Johansen."

Image "Anyway, I've really gotta get to class. Am I free to go, or are you going to keep blaming me for stuff?"

Image "We couldn't keep you here if we wanted."

Image "Then I'm out."

Image "Well... that went well?"

Image "It did, didn't it?"

Image "Not to question your methods or anything, but what was all that nonsense about you guys selling stuff to Western?"

Image "Just testing to see if he was the rat or not."

Image "If he had been selling information to Western, he would have been protective of his territory. Instead of telling Western that it's useless, he would have ordered us to back off."

Image "But he didn't! He was offended at the very notion of selling Edgewater secrets."

Image "By making him think he caught us, we gave him the higher ground. We were at his mercy, so to speak."

Image "And thus, he was willing to make himself vulnerable by demanding a bribe, because he thought he had leverage."

Image "Oh. Well, I guess that works."

Image "But we just eliminated our most plausible motive. What are we going to do now?"

Image "We'll just have to go over everything again. Maybe we'll see something different now that we know what we know."

Image "Well, we don't have many options. Nathan, David, and Jupiter are all out somewhere teaching."

Image "Then we'll start with who we have."

Image "Li Mei's going to talk to Aaron..."

Image "That leaves Shawn and Chance."

Image "Which one do you want?"

Image

User avatar
Image "Your what?"

Image "Chance."

Image "Um..?"

Image "Long story. Don't ask."

Image "That's fine. You take Chance, and we'll talk to Shawn."

Image "Meet up at the fountain afterwards?"

Image "Sure."

Image

Image I quickly make my way to the cafeteria.

Image

Image "Do you really have to call me that?"

Image "We ARE partners, aren't we?"

Image I kind of regret agreeing to this...

Image "You look pretty worn out."

Image "Well, I thought I had a lead, but it wound up being nothing..."

Image "Would you like a coffee? I can get something for you from the cafeteria."

Image "Oh. That actually sounds pretty good..."

Image "Great! Hang on a sec. I'll be right back!"

Image Chance scurries off, leaving me alone with my thoughts and a group of college kids playing a board game about colonizing space. Okay... I pace back and forth, trying hard not to eavesdrop on the space colonials. Apparently they're trading supplies with aliens now.

Image

Image Li Mei approaches swiftly. She looks serious. Then again, when does she not?

Image "What's up?"

Image "We have found something..."

Image "We? You mean you and Aaron?"

Image Li Mei nods slowly.

Image "He showed me his photos. He said it would help him calm down."

Image "And?"

Image "Here."

Image Li Mei hands me a printout of one of the photos Aaron took yesterday. It features Naoki and I mid-sentence, acting as a convenient frame for the bell tower.

Image

Image A sleek, blue bike is propped against the brick wall of the bell tower.

Image "I don't remember seeing that when we found the body..."

Image "Someone was there yesterday morning, right in the middle of our time window."

Image Li Mei nods.

Image "That's one of the campus bikes, isn't it?"

Image "Shawn could tell you for sure."

Image Chance pops up over my shoulder and smiles.

Image "Is that a clue?"

Image "Maybe. I don't know."

Image I try to hide the photo from her, but she's already seen enough.

Image "Let me see it! It's not fair to keep your assistant in the dark like that!"

Image Li Mei flinches slightly, but she makes no comment.

Image "If it's one of the campus bikes, Shawn'll know for sure. His family donated them, after all!"

Image "Let's go talk to him!"

Image "Oh. Yeah, that's a good idea..."

Image "See? I told you having me around would be useful!"

Image With a smug smile, Chance holds out a paper coffee cup to me.

Image "Coffee AND crime solving! I do it all!"

Image "Um, okay..."

Image

Image "Um..?"

Image "Case first. Drink later."

Image Chance giggles.

Image "Okay, okay. You don't have to be so bossy about it! Let's go find Shawn."

Image Chance marches purposefully toward the student lounge, and I follow closely behind.

Image

  • If Chance doctored the coffee, it's a little disturbing that Li Mei didn't say anything.
Image

Image "Hey you two. Getting along, I hope?"

Image "Of course! We just had something to ask you."

Image "Seems like I'm in high demand. Haru and Kizaki were just here."

Image "Well, we probably have something different to ask."

Image I hand Shawn the photo.

Image "That's one of the bikes your family donated to the campus, right?"

Image "Is there anyway to figure out who was using it?"

Image Shawn runs his fingers through his hair nervously.

Image "Um... not really. Sorry, dude."

Image

Image Shawn shifts his weight uncomfortably and tries not to look Chance in the eye.

Image "Are you sure? I mean..."

Image "Trust me. It's fine."

Image "Well, it's kind of hard to tell, but I don't think this bike is one of ours. Not anymore, at least."

Image "Not anymore?"

Image "The bikes at this school undergo a lot of abuse, so my family donates new bikes every few years."

Image "The old ones are sold to students at a heavily discounted rate."

Image "And this is one of the older bikes?"

Image "Yes. This looks like it came from a fleet we retired five years ago. Whoever owns this must have bought it back then."

Image "But-"

Image "What's wrong?"

Image "I know who killed Dr. Johansen!"

Image "You do?"

Image Shawn coughs uncomfortably.

Image "Whoever left the bike there must have been in the tower at that time. Which means whoever owns the bike is probably the killer."

Image

Image "Nathan did it."

Image "Nathan? Are you sure?"

Image "He's the only one who's been at this school long enough. The only person who was around to buy a bike five years ago is him."

Image "Well... I guess that makes sense... but why would he do it?"

Image "We'll ask him when we confront him about it."

Image "Then let's get going."

Image "Wait, both of us?"

Image "Of course! The detective can't just leave the assistant behind when confronting the culprit! Besides, you don't even know where Nathan IS right now."

Image I bite my lip to hold back an unpleasant exclamation. She's right.

Image "Fine. Where is he?"

Image "At the lab. He always goes there to sleep after he teaches his class."

Image "He leaves the building locked, so you'll need me to open the door for you."

Image "Okay, okay. Let's just go."

Image Chance pumps her fist into the air and cheers.

Image "Yay! This is going to be fun!"

Image

Image I pull my phone from my pocket and select Gurski's name from my contact list.

Image "Ooh, who are you calling?"

Image "No one. Just sending a text to the police officer. It's kind of a good idea to alert the police, don't you think?"

Image Chance tries to peek over my shoulder, but I pull away from her. I dash a few paces away from her and hurriedly type out “It's Nathan - going to lab now." Chance is watching me closely, and I suddenly feel very uneasy. I send the text and shove the phone back into my pocket before Chance can do anything else.

Image "So, uh... let's keep going."

Image
Image

Image "Sure thing, partner!"

Image Chance offers a cheerful salute.

Image "Right. Um... I'm heading upstairs, then."

Image I tread up the stairs slowly, trying not to make any sound. I think I can hear someone moving around upstairs, but it might just be my imagination.

Image

Image "Nathan?"

Image The door slams against my head, which, in turn, slams against the wall.

Image "Agh!"

Image Nathan leaps out from behind the door, brandishing his light sword at me. I duck his first swing and grab for him, but he lightly steps out of my reach.

Image "How did you figure it out!?"

Image He snarls at me, keeping me a sword's length away from him.

Image "The bike."

Image "What about it?"

Image "You were in a hurry to meet Dr. Johansen, so you used your bike to get there. Aaron snapped a picture of it."

Image He scowls and takes a few hurried steps down into the hallway.

Image "What happened, Nathan? It was an accident, right?"

Image

Image "I pushed him. Just wanted to give him a little incentive, but he hit his head on the wall."

Image "And what? Did that knock him out?"

Image Nathan looks sullen.

Image "I didn't expect him to be so delicate."

Image "But why destroy his body?"

Image "Because he was still alive, and he wouldn't listen to reason."

Image "Sort of like you!"

Image With a sudden burst of speed, Nathan turns and races down the hallway.

Image "Chance! Gurski!"

Image Nathan bursts out the lab's back door and turns on me immediately.

Image

Image The door behind me slams shut, and he punches a button on the number pad. On the other side of the door, I hear a resounding thud followed by frantic pounding.

Image

Image "What did you do?"

Image "Don't blame me. It's not my fault the sensors don't work."

Image He smirks.

Image "Nah, I'm being too modest. It really is my fault."

Image I grab Nathan and push him against the door.

Image "Open it!"

Image He rolls his eyes.

Image "Yeah, like I'm gonna do that."

Image I can hear Detective Gurski and Chance conferring hurriedly.

Image "What is he talking about?"

Image "The doors are always locked, but the sensors inside are supposed to unlock them any time someone wants to leave."

Image I yell over Nathan's shoulder.

Image "I don't suppose you can turn them back on?"

Image "I-I think the computer in the lab controls it?"

Image "Then let's get going!"

Image The voices on the other side of the door fade quickly.

Image "Nice call. Too bad I'll be gone by then."

Image With a sudden heave, Nathan twists from my grip. He offers me a mocking salute before turning and racing down the alleyway towards the street.

Image
Image

Image

Image Aki strolls around the building, hands resting casually in her pockets. Nathan skids to a halt.

Image "Let me go."

Image "Oh, you know I can't do that."

Image Nathan draws his sword and smashes the end against the wall. The glass shatters, leaving a pointed glass blade. He levels the fractured sword at Aki.

Image "I will kill you."

Image

Image Naoki appears from the street, placing himself squarely between Nathan and Aki. Nathan glares at him.

Image "What are YOU going to do about it?"

Image He rushes Naoki and thrusts his sword at his neck. Naoki calmly sidesteps his attack, catches Nathan's sword arm in his hand, and spins him around. Nathan stumbles toward Aki. She skips back a few paces, hands still in her pockets.

Image "Why did you kill Dr. Johansen?"

Image Nathan steadies himself and aims his sword at her again.

Image

Image "That's why he came back! He wanted to get rid of it all!"

Image With a ferocious growl, he dashes towards her, sword at the ready. She ducks his thrust, and his sword finds nothing but empty air.

Image

Image She kicks his legs, and he trips over her. He rolls on the ground and springs back to his feet.

Image "Of course not, but a kid like you wouldn't understand."

Image "Maybe. Maybe not. Try me."

Image Aki jogs backwards and leaps lightly behind Naoki.

Image "You're a smart guy, Nathan. You know the concept of fight or flight?"

Image "Of course I do!"

Image Nathan practically spits the words at her. Aki beams at him as if he just offered her some freshly baked cookies.

Image "Which one are you, Nathan? Fight or flight?"

Image She cocks her head to the side.

Image "What do you think, Naoki?"

Image

Image Naoki's voice is steady. Almost... teasing.

Image

Image Aki nods at the path behind Nathan leading directly to the street. Nathan doesn't even bother to turn.

Image "I think it's because we challenged him, Aki."

Image "Oh, Naoki! He can't stand the idea of losing!"

Image "Shut up! Both of you!"

Image

Image Nathan tightens the grip on his sword and his eyes dart back and forth as if he can't pick which one he wants to impale first. With a wild scream, Nathan raises his sword and charges toward them. The twins exchange a brief glance and Aki nods approvingly at Naoki.

Image

Image Nathan retaliates with a punch, but Naoki pushes his fist aside with a practiced swipe.

Image

Image "It's not fair!"

Image He screams at Naoki, his voice laced with hatred. The door behind me bursts open. Looks like Chance fixed it.

Image

Image Nathan doesn't even bother to fight back. His eyes show a mixture of defeat and rage.

Image "Good of you to join us."

Image Aki smirks. Gurski rolls his eyes, but I can tell he's smiling.

Image "You really should have run when you had the chance, Nathan."

Image Aki crosses her arms and leans casually against the wall.

Image "Then you could have at least ten more seconds of freedom before we caught you."

Image "It's not fair!"

Image Nathan screams viciously. His face has lost all trace of compassion. It's almost as if something broke inside him.

Image "Yes, I think you mentioned that already. Care to elaborate?"

Image "Johansen picked that woman over me!"

Image "Jupiter?"

Image "I should have been in charge! I'm the oldest! I'm the smartest!"

Image "And then she has the gall to choose David as second in command? He never takes anything seriously!"

Image Nathan's getting more and more worked up by the minute.

Image "Aaron came from that second-rate school, and they welcomed him without a thought. I'm better than all of them, but they treat me like a joke."

Image "You killed him because you wanted a higher position at school?"

Image Nathan laughs derisively.

Image

Image Detective Gurski's eyes suddenly darken.

Image "What did you say?"

Image Nathan glares at us.

Image
Image

Image "She? Who are-"

Image

Image A sudden knot forms in my stomach and I turn back to the lab. Chance is nowhere to be seen.

Image

Image "Kan! Where are you going?"

Image I yell over my shoulder at the closing door.

Image "It's Chance! She's the one who set it up!"

Image
Image

Image "That took longer than I thought. Maybe I overestimated you."

Image "Sorry to disappoint you."

Image "You should be. Do you have any idea what a bore it is to babysit you?"

Image "Who are you?"

Image "You know, I wanted to kill you from the start. I probably would have if you had gotten too close."

Image "But..?"

Image

Image "You can be arrested for conspiracy, you know."

Image "If you can catch me. And if you're wondering about your friends, they can't get in. Their cards have expired already. There may have been a little typo in the database when Shawn issued them."

Image "What is Dragon's Blood?"

Image

Image "Why does Nathan want it?"

Image "All these questions! I think you already know the answer, but you're just afraid to say it."

Image
Image

Image Chance flicks a crumpled sheet of paper at me, and it bounces along the ground harmlessly.

Image "Until next time."

Image Chance turns and strides toward the front door.

Image "Wait!"

Image I race forward and grab her wrist.

Image
Image
Image
Image
Image

Image A car pulls up and she opens the door. Shawn is sitting in the driver's seat. He glances at me with an air of cool disinterest. Chance steps into the car and slams the door shut, leaving me to watch them disappear down the street.

Image

Image

Image

Image I rub my head slowly, but the pounding headache from Chance isn't going away.

Image "No idea where they went?"

Image "I barely had any idea of where I was. Whatever she did really hurt..."

Image "Please try to relax."

Image "What do you think I'm doing?"

Image I try not to snap at Naoki, but I still feel miserable. Li Mei knowingly places her hand on mine and smiles reassuringly.

Image "You did well."

Image "She's right. We lost Chance and Shawn, but at least we caught the killer."

Image "Yeah, I guess that's a good thing. How did you two even know where to find me?"

Image "Li Mei."

Image "She came to us after you and Chance went off together."

Image "If not for her, Nathan would be long gone by now."

Image "I find it hard to believe Nathan would do that. Did he really hate me that much?"

Image Jupiter sighs and shakes her head.

Image "If I had just known... Maybe if I had chosen him instead of David..."

Image "You can't blame yourself for his decisions."

Image "At least we have a lead to follow now."

Image "That's right! We still didn't manage to collect Johansen's old research!"

Image "Oh, I can help you with that."

Image "Really?"

Image Jupiter walks to the computer and types in a few lines.

Image "What did you need?"

Image "Nathan said something about Dragon's Blood. Do you know what that is?"

Image Jupiter nods, and her fingers fly across the keyboard.

Image "As far as I know, Dr. Johansen didn't get much further than a few odd notes, but they might be useful."

Image "Are you sure you can give this to us? Aren't they classified or something?"

Image "In Dr. Johansen's absence, I'm qualified to give the government anything I deem pertinent."

Image "That includes this."

Image

Image "Technically, I'm the only government employee here."

Image "Awww, Miko! That's mean!"

Image "You'd be required to turn it in to me, anyway. I'm just saving you the trouble."

Image "You're an enemy of fun, you know that?"

Image "Call it what you want."

Image Gurski pockets the drive before Aki can protest any more.

Image "Well, if there's anything else I can do for you, just let me know."

Image "Um... I do have one strange request..."

Image "Ask."

Image "Your rabbit. The one Li Mei caught the other night. Can we have it?"

Image "I suppose it would do no harm. We're likely to be disbanded and sent to work with other people now."

Image "Why do you want it?"

Image "Um... I guess everything that happened these past few days got me thinking."

Image

Image Jupiter sighs.

Image "Noble indeed, but it's not always that simple."

Image "Maybe not. But this time, it is."

Image
Image

Image "Alright, kids. I'm glad we all had great fun, but it's time to go home."

Image "Well, there's still one more thing..."

Image "Oh?"

Image I hold up the crumpled paper that Chance tossed at me.

Image "A flyer for a resort? Don't tell me you need a break from this relaxing job, Kan."

Image "Cute, but no. Have a closer look."

Image Naoki leans forward and reads the flyer's cheery message.

Image

Image "You're kidding."

Image "You know this place, Miko?"

Image "No, but Kangai does."

Image "It's the place where I... where we solved our first case."

Image "So this... is an invitation?"

Image "It is. And I'm going to accept it."

Image Aki grins and pats me on the back.
