Hirohiko Araki wrote:"I hate working in silence. I always have some music or radio station on — like
Musashino FM — when I work. It's as important a tool, to me, as paper or a pen.

But I'm disorganised and lazy sometimes, and can't always find my CD's.
So, a coworker showed me how to find and listen to music directly on the
internet! And I'm a bit of an online video "addict" now! I even found videos
of people playing JoJo video games, but many of them just talk right over them.
I'm thinking "Shut up! People want to hear the video game, not you or your lame

I guess, there's some mysteries in life, we're not meant to understand..."

Welcome one and all, to another duology Let's Play behind the sick twisted minds of the 50 Cent Duology; The JoJo Duology. JoJo's Bizarre Adventure is a japanimation/comimanga split up into several parts, each focusing on a different character in the Joestar lineage who, along with their own unique set of allies, fight against strange enemies who threaten their peaceful lives. We are going through two games from two different parts; JoJo's Bizarre Adventure for the Super Famicom, a Part 3 game, and GioGio's Bizarre Adventure for the PS2, which is a Part 5 game. ChorpSaway will be heading up the Super Famicom game and I, FutureFriend, will be heading up the PS2 one. For these Let's Plays we will be joined by the other members of The Otaku Trash Machine, TheJayOfSpade (nerd) and Taoc (jock). Both games are Japanese exclusives, but have been fan-translated, so we will be using those versions.

Image

JoJo's Bizarre Adventure (SFC) is a JRPG made by Winkysoft, who have pretty much developed 95% of all SNES anime adaptation games. Their outing in JoJo is weird, its an utterly bog-standard JRPG that is mostly just a weird highlights version of Stardust Crusaders where every fight takes place 2 minutes after the previous. It's cool though, Jotaro can die by being yelled at rudely by an ape. Despite being a JRPG, it's also very short, so this will be a Video LP provided to us by ChorpSaway. This game was fan-translated by romhacking group Aeon Genesis.

GioGio's Bizarre Adventure is a PS2 action game made by Capcom. It's a weird clunky boss rush game that does a surprisingly decent job translating Golden Wind's fights and their mechanics into video game form. It's almost obsessively devoted to translating nearly everything from the Manga 1:1 into the game. It's interesting and hell, I think, as the person providing this part of the LP, its worth checking out for how it tries to do this. This game was fan-translated by manga translation group JoJo's Colored Adventure. This game's LP also won't be released until we're done with the Super Famicom Game, sorry for that!

Image
No rules. As long as this thread stays fun and funny, we'll keep it that way. This Let's Play also won't be spoiler-free, so go wild!

My unbiased review of this let's play so far: it's fantastic, a detailed deconstruction of Jotaro Jojo and his wacky stories. I'm giving this one a thumbs up

I'm glad this is here as well. The question of how to fight a car in a turn-based rpg is finally answered (same as everything else).

From the very start I was concerned about how the game would handle the D'Arby fight, but it's somehow even worse than I expected. For reference, I thought the game would probably just force you to only use the Talk command, which would've just been another damage race with different numbers but still better than THAT.

Damn, d'Arby wasn't even supernatural outside of the thing where he was maybe a ghost. He just played a regular-ass simple card game with us for fun.

At least Judgement boosting is attack through thinking about how Hell 2 U is the coolest taunt ever made up for that. :allears:

Is the equipment at least relevant? That seems to be the only actual RPG mechanic in this game, given how the characters keep doing the same damage with the same attacks.

The equipment is relevant, but not in like a particularly satisfying way. Like, you don't have visible changing stats outside of HP and MP, so the only thing you can do to be better at taking and dealing damage is via equipment. Basically, upgrading equipment keeps you level against most of the bosses and lets you completely dominate basic enemies, which would be good for a sense of character progression if this wasn't effectively a boss rush game.

How common are the random encounters? Are they just mind controlled goons and vampires?

They're not necessarily "random", the enemies will always appear in the same location in the maps. If you explore the dungeons more for items, you'll run into more of them than I did and it could seem random, but it's largely a skipable part of the experience since they don't actually provide much of a challenge. And yeah, they're generally just generic vampires and stuff.

That sure was a strange adventure.

I'm really looking forward to the next one, a boss rush that tries to hit all the plot beats sounds fascinating.

So I'm going to ask what is probably a foolish question. What is the meaning of "Stardust Crusaders?" Do the various series titles mean anything, or is it just word salad?

I think it's because the protagonists are going on a "crusade" to Egypt and Jotaro's Stand is Star Platinum. That's...basically it. Phantom Blood is because it's about vampires and Battle Tendency is because...Joseph gets into a lot of fights?

Yeah, the titles tend to have more of a thematic connection to the contents of their part, if even that.
By the way, one early scanlation translated the title of part 4 as "Diamond is Not Crash".

i mean obviously araki did that so you would not refuse it with cronenberg's classic Crash (2004)

Knowing nothing about Jojo outside of this LP, I have to ask if they explained the banana gun thing in the anime or if it was always just "Yeah I turned this banana into a gun, don't question it"
Based on what I have heard about the anime it's either an incredibly specific power that someone has or they just hope you don't ask questions

Yeah, that's just kind of Giorno's thing. He turns objects into living things and sometimes turns them back. Like the gun! Then again, this particular part is known for being particularly incomprehensible. Who really knows how King Crimson works, anyway?

Another aspect is that Stand battles are all about creative application of abilities that sometimes borders on rules-lawyering. For instance, a character in another part has the ability to put destroyed things back together, and he can use that to track people by planting a piece of an object on them and using his ability on the rest of the object so that it flies toward the target over any distance to reunite with its lost piece. The ability of Giorno's Stand is to "give life" to things, which can sometimes translate to overloading other people with life energy so that they experience everything in slow motion, and sometimes to transforming a gun into a banana.

Those title cards are very powerful. handdrawnsquare made something special when they drew Black Sabbath slipping on a banana peel.

Giorno didn't turn a banana into a gun, he turned a gun into a banana. And then he asked it to turn back into a gun while Polpo was eating it, because the creatures he creates are very loyal to him and apparently bananas are capable of understanding the concept of "loyalty" and following basic instructions.

Bananas have no concept of loyalty but guns do.
