Last time, the gang discovered the ancient ruins of the Mu.

Dr. Anzai, the enemy's still somewhere around here. Please don't go off on your own.

I apologize. When I saw the Mu ruins of my dreams, I couldn't help but want to see them in person.

At least you're safe, Dr. Anzai. That's all that matters.

Hmm…

But I know how she feels. Anyone with the slightest interest in archeology wouldn't be able to stay still after seeing all this.

I can't disagree. By the way, Doctor, what's that you're holding?

This? Dunno. It looked interesting when I found it.

Can I see it?

Sure. Thoughts?

…It seems to be a recording device. A pretty old one too…

Does it still work?

I doubt it. It's tens of thousands of years old.

…No… It's still functional.

Really? Amazing! Please get it working.

…Got it. Can everyone step back for a moment?

Whoa! A g-g-ghost!

Executive Director, it's not a ghost. It's a hologram.

How dare they scare us like that! It's outrageous! Right, President?

SHHHHHH!

Sorry.

The hologram girl's kinda cute.

Dang, it's rare for Rai to compliment a girl.

But she really is.

Shut up already!
This is when an FMV plays. I have the transcription of it below. Special thanks to Caphi, Peytral, and an anonymous contributor for their help. You can see the FMV on its own
here.
I am Mew. I leave this as a record of our existence. We are the descendants of people who were invaded by the Balmar Empire and fled to this world. But just as we began to build a new civilization here, they arrived.

Their attacks began immediately, without giving us a chance for dialogue. We had no choice but to defend ourselves, but we're evenly matched. The war continues to drag on as I record this.

Due to the destructive weapons used by both sides, the planet's temperature is slowly rising. The polar ice caps are beginning to melt. It's only a matter of time before this continent sinks beneath the waves. Our extinction is inevitable.

To ensure the survival of our race, we entrusted twelve of our surviving children with valuable genetic manipulation devices and our entire stock of Tronium, evacuating them to the highest point on this planet. There's only a small chance they'll survive, yet we're out of options.

I'm making this recording to pass on the anger and sorrow of a race being slaughtered to extinction. Perhaps no one will find this, but even so, that will be fine. I go into our final battle believing that someone in the future will find this.
Our last hope is in those twelve children, and in the Mutron-powered battle robot, Reid--
(TL Note: The girl's name is Mew, or ミュウ, but her civilization is the Mu, or ムー. It's intentional.)

W-what!? What did she say!? She said Reideen, right?

Maybe? She got cut off halfway through.

More importantly, she said Tronium, yeah? They gave the evacuees Tronium…

That's what she said.

!?

Master, do you know about this Tronium?

W-why would I know about something like that?

You just look as surprised as Eiji.

You fool! I was just surprised that aliens went to Tibet!

(Ugh…)

Oh, yeah. You once said you were from Tibet.

Exactly!

(Phew…)

Eiji, what is Tronium anyway?

Tronium is--

We've got hostiles!
Earth Route Chapter 25: Revenge of the Death Demon Squad

EIJI! SHOW YOURSELF! I won't lose this time!

Gosterro, don't fight alone. We're a team, remember?

Don't bother, Getty. He'll never listen to a thing you say.

He knows. I fight my own way. Ahahahahaha!

Gosterro! I don't care how you fight, as long as you win! Failure is not an option!

I know. I got this.

Bone, Getty, we'll focus on the Daiku-Maryu. If that's destroyed, they won't be able to leave this place! Got it?

Good plan.

Loud and clear!

Deploy the troops! There're 10 deployment slots. I'm using Kenichi, Eiji, Sanshiro, Domon, Ryusei, Rai, Akira, Watta, David, and Rowan.

This map is a little more interesting than most. We're caught in a crossroads of caves, with enemies to our northwest and west. Retreating to the southeast may sound like an idea, but enemy reinforcements spawn there on the sixth enemy phase, so there's a chance they can shoot someone down without warning.

The Death Demon Squad are back, same as the last stage. Gosterro's AI will have him focus on Eiji exclusively, while the other three will focus on the Daiku-Maryu. Try to use your units as a wall and/or take them out as soon as possible. How well the Death Demon Squad succeed will impact something later in the game.
SECRET ALERT
Layzner Mk-II or Enhanced Layzner and V-MAX
- If you want the Layzner Mk-II, do not let Bone, Getty, or Manjero damage the Daiku-Maryu.
- If you want the Enhanced Layzner and the V-MAX ability, let the Daiku-Maryu be damaged by the Death Demon Squad.
We won't get either of the Layzner upgrades for a long while, but this is where you decide which one you'll get.
For the purposes of this LP, I'm getting the Layzner Mk-II. However, I will show off what happens if you get the Daiku-Maryu damaged.

This is bad. They're targeting the Daiku-Maryu! Everyone, protect us!

Rei! Activate V-MAX!

READY.

Eiji, what was that?

That was V-MAX.

Dammit. Even if we all work together, we can't beat the Layzner with an activated V-MAX.

But we can't just leave without trying!
Doing this event will not only shove the Daiku-Maryu to the far southeast part of the map, opening it up for an ambush, but it'll unlock V-MAX for the Layzner.

V-MAX works differently in Shin compared to other games with Layzner. Here, it's a map command like Mazin Power, though it doesn't have a morale requirement. It lasts for three turns, during which Layzner gets an increase to its stats, a beam coat, and a new attack (in which Eiji rams the Layzner into the enemy several times). It also changes the battle BGM to
V-MAX. Once the three full turns are over, the Layzner overheats and will be unable to act for one turn. After that, you're free to use V-MAX again!
But we're not going to use this power for some time yet, as we're going for the Layzner Mk-II. So pretend all that never happened. If you're worried about not getting to use this ability, the Mk-II comes with V-MAXIMUM, which acts the same way.
Not only is the Layzner upgrade determined in this stage, but there's another secret upgrade for one of our mechs.
SECRET ALERT
Reideen's secret weapons
Bring Reideen to (10, 13) for an upgrade to the Gorgon Sword, and (13, 9) to unlock God Voice.
Have Reideen break through the fighting to raid the ruins in the northwest. Here are the scenes when you bring Reideen to those squares:

T-this is the Gorgon Sword! Is Reideen really the legacy of the Mu?

God Voice! Raise your voice until your heart bursts… That voice is God Ramu. Shout in praise of Ramu's name!

W-who's talking? Where's this voice coming from?
I should note that while the new Gorgon Sword is an upgrade over Reideen's stock version, you also lose all upgrades you put into it. But it is a free attack, so it's worth re-investing into it. God Voice is an extremely powerful 1-range finisher that drains Reideen of most of its EN, but is one of the strongest attacks you can get outside of the SRX, Shin Getter, and a Mazin Powered Mazinger. Contrary to its showing in other games, Akira doesn't seem to be affected by God Voice, so you can use it as many times as you like.
Here are the items:

The map ends when all enemies are defeated.
You do get a quick scene if you get the Gorgon Sword upgrade before we get to the VN screen.

Akira, what're you doing all the way over there?

During the battle, I stumbled across a Mu armory. I found this.

A sword? Ah, is that the Gorgon Sword!?

Bingo! To be precise, it's an improved version of the Gorgon Sword.

So Reideen really is…

Yeah. Mew really was about to mention Reideen.

But that's amazing. It must be so much more powerful than your old Gorgon Sword, right?

I think so. It's definitely sharper. With this, Reideen can fight a lot better in close combat.

Was there anything else?

There was a God Gorgon, but it's the same as my usual one.

Shame. But finding a better Gorgon Sword is a huge find.

Yeah. I kinda like it.

You were defeated by mere Earthlings and were forced to retreat. The Death Demon Squad has truly fallen.

I'm so sorry. We underestimated them.

It is what it is. Bone, make sure you keep a close eye on them.

Of course, sir.

Manjero, expedite the investigation.

Sir!
If you got the V-MAX event, the conversation is slightly different.

You were defeated by mere Earthlings and were forced to retreat. The Death Demon Squad has truly fallen.

I don't know why, but they had the Layzner. Plus, they used V-MAX. There's no way we can beat that.

Wait, so Eiji is with the Earthlings? Hmm… He keeps getting in my way. In that case, I'll have to teach them a lesson personally. Bone, keep a close eye on them.

Of course, sir.

Manjero, expedite the investigation.

Sir!

Eiji, what exactly is Tronium? From the name, I'm assuming it's a metal.

You're correct about that. As far as I know, it's the rarest and most valuable metal in the universe.

What makes it so great?

Are you familiar with warp travel?

I know! It's that thing in sci-fi stuff that lets you travel to distant places instantly. Ya know, I'm a big fan of Captain Kirk.

Ha! Captain Kirk he says. That show's ancient. Captain Janeway's the new hotness.
(TL Note: This game came out in 1996, when Voyager was airing. Yes, the names are in the original text.)

Zip it!
[Ryusei bonks Watta]

Ouch!

How many times must I tell you!? He's the president of our company! Stop hitting him on the head! I won't let you get away with this!!

M-my bad. I'm sorry, Watta. Really sorry.

You're fine. Just don't ever do it again.

Yeah. I don't want your director to kill me.

Hmph!

Ahem… Anyway, the gist of it is that it's technology that shortens travel in outer space. Warp drives require a tremendous amount of energy that can't be supplied by ordinary nuclear reactors. However, by using Tronium as a catalyst, it's possible.

I see… What makes it so rare?

Tronium is only minable on the planet Tron. In the past, a giant comet struck Tron, destroying the planet. Since then, despite endless searching throughout the cosmos, additional Tronium deposits have never been found.

So all the Tronium that exists was mined before that comet?

Yes. As I mentioned before, Balmar has been in a war of expansion for thousands of years. Battleship production is always a top priority, for which Tronium is required.

So whoever controls the most Tronium is the most powerful. Balmar must have a vast reserve of the stuff.

I believe Mew said they brought theirs to Tibet.

More precisely, she said the highest place on the planet.

Yeah, Tibet.

That's what it is now, but there's no guarantee it was the same back during the Mu's time.

I can't think of another place that fits the bill…

I agree. It's the only location that fits.

If Tronium is there, we need to go after it.

Let's get out of here and head to Tibet.

You fool! How impulsive! How reckless! What good will rushing there do? We should first return to base and depart when prepared.

I agree with the Undefeated of the East. Let's return to base for now.

Good judgement, Dr. Daimonji. I'm impressed that you came to the same conclusion as me. Listen, Domon. If you rely only on technique and power, you'll never become the true King of Hearts. You must make accurate judgements. Cultivate the knowledge to do so, and your heart will never steer you wrong. Got it?

Yes, Master!

He's so unfriendly with us, but he's like a cute puppy to his master.

I mean, they have a deep master-student relationship.

The gap is massive.

I guess it's just his personality.

You're one to talk.

You knocking my award winning personality?

Ugh. This BS again?

Did I say something wrong?

…

…

…

????????
