First up, the Ice Man himself.

The base R-2 is decent. It's the bulkiest mech we have on this route so far besides Gaiking, and its I Field helps when fighting some of the OG enemies. Despite having a B rank in Air, it can fly, but you'll want to land it as soon as possible to take advantage of its A rank in ground. Its biggest weakness is that its best attack, the Beam Chakram, only has 4 ammo. Most of the time, you'll want the R-2 to stay in one place and snipe enemies with its rifle.

Nothing really to do but to move everyone east and wipe out the aliens. As long as you keep the R-2 on a building, Rai can fend for himself very easily, at least until he runs out of rifle and chakram ammo. Have Ryusei go reinforce him, while everyone else moves on the northern bank of the river.

Enemy reinforcements spawn on the third enemy phase. These Kyos are extremely agile, so watch out.

There is technically a boss, the battleship Fure, but I won't be covering it since it's impossible to kill. It retreats either when it hits 50% HP or during a plot event on the fifth enemy phase. Speaking of which…

Here's the boss, Old Man Killer's Grotector. It is possible to defeat it with a well-invested Trider (Watta gets Valor at level 10, along with an upgraded Trider Bird Attack), but it retreats at 50% HP. Either way, you'll have to get it off the map in order to beat the chapter. The Grotector can and will deal massive damage to our units, so try to bait out its main cannon in order to exhaust its EN supplies.

I forgot to take a picture of the map, but there's not that much to see. The objective of this map is to survive through 4 waves of enemy reinforcements. Very weak enemy reinforcements spawn during the enemy phase when they have 4 or fewer units remaining, but these guys drop pennies so they're not worth farming.

Honestly, this could have been another email.

The only boss of this stage is Jeangall in his Skullrook. It's impossible to defeat him, since when his HP drops below 26,000, he restores full HP. That's also not to mention that the Skullrook's giant drill attack will deal a lot of damage to anyone it hits, and our only units for this stage aren't known for their defense.

Jeangall is also with Beast Knight Namazungo, which I consider a miniboss since it's stronger than the other mooks. If you position Reideen exactly 8 squares north of Namazungo, you can aggro it, but still stay safe from Jeangall.

According to an online guide, if you use cheats to somehow destroy Jeangall, the game bugs out and continues to spawn reinforcements whenever someone does an action.

If you don't want the items on the stage, the best course of action is to camp in the woods on the island the trio spawns on.

Here are the items on the map. There's also a Zolmanium Alloy hidden under Jeangall, so you'd have to lure him away by getting into his range. I didn't bother going for it, since, remember, armor parts are bugged to decrease the unit's armor instead of increasing it.

We're back at the Photon Power Lab and the situation's the same as the last time. The Daiku-Maryu is unable to move, and we have to defeat all enemies on the map. There aren't many right now, but more will show up with some rather different spawn conditions.

It's also worth mentioning that you can't deploy Fan Li, Bunta, or Watta, since Watta is currently back home for a bit. Dunno about the other two. You'll only have Sanshiro, Ryusei, Rai, Akira, and Yamatake for this chapter.

Here's the boss, Dankel in his Grotector. Same as before, but now we have to actually fight it. I didn't notice it before this map since this is the first time we have to properly fight one, but Grotectors have innate HP Regen, making them more difficult to take down than I thought.

The enemy reinforcements spawn near the center of the map based on Dankel's HP. A pack of random mooks appears after Dankel's next action when he's between 100-80%, another when he's between 80-60%, and a third when he's below 60% HP. After that third pack spawns, he retreats with the following line.

Image Today just isn't going my way.

It is possible to skip reinforcement phases if you deal enough damage in a single turn, and it is possible to defeat Dankel if you've invested in your units enough.

Once again, I forgot to take a look at the map. It's a brawl where we get to control Domon and Master Asia against four Death Army soldiers. Our martial artists can easily defeat each MS in a single hit, and they cannot get hit in return, so this is the greatest email-like stage ever. Instead of going for the kills, use this time to gather the few items around Shinjuku. The Daiku-Maryu is in the top corner, but it can't move, so just ignore it. You'll probably want to give all the kills to Domon, since we can't get Master Asia permanently in this game.

Firstly, we got some changes to the squad.

Gaiking and the Daiku-Maryu got an upgrade in both stats and weapons. Gaiking gets 500 HP, 20 EN, 2 mobility, 100 armor, 10 limit, 1 move, better terrain ranks, and three new attacks. Plus, its old attacks get a slight buff of between 100 and 300 extra power each. The Daiku-Maryu gets 4000 HP, 20 EN, 100 armor, and the Giant Cutter and Miracle Drill attacks.

Trider can now transform into the Trider Cosmic and Trider Beagle. Normally I'd try to talk in depth about these new forms, but they're just really bad. They lower Trider's already weak defenses and mobility without even increasing its offenses, making it a sitting duck. Cosmic does have one extra point of movement if you really need it, but just stick to base form.

The Shining Gundam has now joined the squad for the rest of the game. Make good use of him, and enjoy the quite silly Shining Finger animation.

This map is super annoying. Our objective is to defeat all enemies, but the majority of them are in the forested valley between the two mountain ranges. The enemies in that forest are extremely tanky, and that's without the defensive bonuses gotten from the terrain. Don't overextend, and whittle down the enemies as you slowly advance forward. Thankfully, these enemies use beam attacks, making the R-2 and any unit you gave an anti-beam coating to extremely good at fighting them.

Our main boss of the stage is Killer in his Grotector again. We actually have to destroy it this time, as it won't retreat at low HP. Bait out its EN, then pile on the damage once it only has weak attacks left.

There's also the Fure again in the southeast corner of the map, but a plot event happens on the fifth enemy phase that causes it to run away. We'll get it one of these days.

Enemy reinforcements spawn on the third enemy turn. There are Kikaijus to the west, and SPTs to the northeast and southeast. Make sure the ones to the northeast don't surprise your less-armored units like Reideen and Trider. Remember that SPTs have laser weapons, so they're not affected by anti-beam stuff.

It's another standard kill-'em-all stage. Use the Daiku-Maryu to ferry your landlocked units. These are all things we've seen before.

The boss of this stage is Jeangall's Skullrook. He retreats at 40% HP (16,000), and even if you can deal that much damage in a single attack to defeat him, he somehow always stays at 10 HP, so there's not much point in trying to do so.

Here are the items. Make sure you pick up the Minovsky Craft on the southernmost island (last picture). It's the only one that exists in the game, and giving a unit like the Shining Gundam the ability to fly helps a lot.

I want to make an extra note here about the Minovsky Craft. It allows units to fly and gives attacks that normally can't hit flying units an A-rank in the air, but it doesn't improve that unit's own terrain ranking. If they normally have a B in the air, they'll keep having a B in the air.

Voltes is back! This is a solo map, where Voltes must take on everything by itself. Have Voltes collect the items, either combined or splitting up, but you should do the bulk of combat while sitting on top of Big Falcon. Its HP/EN regen and defensive bonuses make fighting the boss a lot easier.

Speaking of the boss, here's Killer in his Grotector. Its own HP regen makes fighting this a pain, but the moment it runs out of EN for its laser cannon, it effectively becomes harmless.

I used this time to build up the Voltes Team's levels by grinding weak attacks on Killer. You'll want to be at a high enough level for Kenichi to have Valor and Hiyoshi to have Luck (level 18) to get the best possible payout.

Here are the items on the map. As mentioned, it's easier to split up to get them, but I wanted to use the whole Voltes after so long.

Not a fighter by any stretch of the imagination. It has a resupply module, but its best use is as an accel-bot to gather items around the map. I ended up not deploying it at all for the rest of the game.

This map could have been an email. The enemy SPTs are extremely weak. Even the Volt Machines can deal with them. Just make sure you collect all the items before you kill the last enemy. You don't have to worry about any bosses or reinforcements. If you combine into Voltes, you can end the map during the first enemy phase!

Here are said items. The last item, a Cartridge, works differently in this game. It automatically restores all of a unit's ammo when one of its weapons runs dry. It's still a consumable, so you lose the part when this triggers.

Image We were on a Mars base for training when Eiji arrived in this shuttle to warn us about a crisis on Earth.

Image Him. He showed up one day and said, "My name is Albatro Null Eiji Asuka. The Earth is under attack". It sure shocked everyone. Then, a fleet of alien ships appeared and destroyed the entire base. We only managed to escape thanks to him.

Image Really? You look no different from us. I thought you'd be some sort of octopus-looking monster.
Image There are species out there that look different from us, but most races have similar skeletal structures.
Image Wow, so there're a lot of aliens out there, huh?
Image There are far more living things in the universe than you can imagine. However, this galaxy is special. Maybe because of its remoteness, there are a lot fewer living species here than in other galaxies. That's why you've never come across them until now.

First up, our new units. On this route, they stay with us for the rest of the game.

[SPT-LZ-00X Layzner]
The main Real Robot of this route, along with the R-1. The Layzner is extremely agile, making it very difficult to hit. It also has some decently powerful attacks and a bunshin. However, its famous V-MAX upgrade is technically optional, but we'll get into that in a few stages. Give it some love and it'll make things a lot easier later. Just watch out for its limited ammo, making it a decent recipient for Cartridges.

[SPT-BB-02U Baybull]
A slightly bulkier Layzer, bunshin and all. It can only use its rifle and punch, but it'll get outclassed later in the game. If you want to use it, it can be a decent second-string fighter.

[SPT-BD-03U Buldy]
The Buldy has a long-ranged cannon, which is about all it has going for it. The Buldy will take a lot more investment than the Layzner, but it can be a decent sniper and support unit.

Destroy the enemies around the starting islands and the southeast island before turning your attention to Jeangall. You don't really need to split up your troops, but I did for expediency's sake. Domon dealt with the UFOs on the northern island, Ryusei and Rai tackled the Beast Knights on the west island, and Voltes, Reideen, Gaiking, and the SPTs dealt with the enemies to the southeast.

Additional mooks spawn on the sixth enemy phase as well, but they only have beam attacks, so the R-2 or anyone with an anti-beam coat can easily solo them.

Here's our main boss for the stage, Jeangall's Skullrook. We have to fight it seriously this time, so get ready for a slobberknocker. Watch out for its extremely powerful 1-range drill attack.

However, an event happens when Jeangall hits 45% HP.

Despite being Heinel's Skullrook, a mook is piloting it. Oh well.

It's recommended now to ignore Jeangall and destroy the new Skullrook, as it'll retreat at the next plot event, and it would be a shame to lose out on all that money.

Speaking of plot events, the important one happens when Jeangall hits 20% HP.

Jeangall will immediately attack the Daiku-Maryu. What you do here will determine what stage you get next, and if you're able to get one of the game's few secrets.

SECRET ALERT
Kill Jeangall
Counterattack the Skullrook. You don't need to be able to shoot it down or even hit it.

Save Jeangall and recruit Heinel
Defend or evade the Skullrook's attack.

Of course, if Jeangall's attack destroys the Daiku-Maryu, it's Game Over, so make sure it's well healed before this event.

For the purposes of this LP, I'm saving Jeangall, since there's no reason to kill him.

If you decide to kill Jeangall by counterattacking, the battle continues as normal and you destroy his Skullrook, killing him.

If you're saving him, the following plays out:

Last time, the Daiku-Maryu Squad had a dramatic confrontation with the Boazans.

As mentioned in the last chapter, this stage is slightly different depending on whether you killed Jeangall or not. For the purposes of this LP, we'll be going down the "don't kill Jeangall" route, but I will point out any differences.

Earth Route Chapter 20: Betrayal

If you killed Jeangall, this chapter is called "Vengeful Demon". The map is the same.

Deploy the troops! There're only 8 deployment slots, so I'm taking Kenichi, Domon, Eiji, Akira, Ryusei, Rai, Watta, and Sanshiro.

Regardless of the route, we got an upgrade!

An upgrade to the R-2 in every way. The biggest difference is the Hi-Zol Launcher, a very powerful and long-ranged attack. Beyond that, it got a small stat and weapon power upgrade. Thankfully, all upgrades to the R-2 transferred over to it.

Here's the starting map. It's the same on both routes. The enemy is just a bunch of Red Baroms and two Grotectors.

Here's one of the Grotectors, but they leave during the first enemy phase, so it's not likely that you can take them down. If you're on "Vengeful Demon", you'll have to fight both of them.

Anyway, the new boss is Heinel in the Guardian God Godol. This thing is very, very strong, but its attacks only have a range of one, so you can attack it from a distance without worry.

If you didn't kill Jeangall yourself, a secret opens up to you.

Heinel #2
Convince Heinel with Kenichi three times.

Otherwise, you'll have to defeat him.

The first time:

Image Heinel, for some reason I can't think of you as my enemy. If we talk, we should be able to understand each other.
Image What nonsense! Do you think I, Prince Heinel, would surrender to mere Earthlings!?

The second time:

Image After what we just saw, I don't think we should be fighting each other.

Convincing Heinel thrice brings him onto our side. This LP will proceed as if you're doing this.

With that bulk, this thing cannot be killed, which is a good thing since it only has 1-ranged attacks. We don't get to use it for long, so have fun with it while you can.

Another difference between stages is after the first battle against Heinel, the following scene plays out at the start of the next player phase:

Image This is bad. Sakon, order everyone to retreat.
Image Sir. All units, retreat! Board the Daiku-Maryu immediately!

The map objective then changes to "have all units board the Daiku-Maryu". Doing so will end the map, but you can still destroy Heinel for the EXP and money.

Apparently, if you fight Heinel when the Daiku-Maryu is already shot down (which won't result in a Game Over here), a scene plays out where cutscene-exclusive character Dr. Sakunji will show up and tell you to keep fighting. I haven't found a source of what he says, though.

Image Actually, the aliens were very interested in my theory that the Mu ruins are submerged off the coast of Japan, or more specifically, in the Mariana Trench. They went off to the trench almost immediately.

Deploy the troops! There are 7 deployment slots, and you cannot deploy any SPTs. I'm deploying Heinel, Kenichi, Domon, Ryusei, Akira, Sanshiro, and Watta. However, I highly recommend using Rai. You also cannot deploy units that cannot be underwater, like the R-Wing, Trider Cosmic, or Trider Beagle, which is why I recommended switching those units out of those forms.

Welcome to underwater hell! The goal of this mission is to defeat all enemies, but they're nothing. No, the true enemy is the infinite water terrain. All units will have their movements reduced to 2-3, and their attack power severely weakened. The only exceptions to the restricted movement are the Daiku-Maryu and the R-2. The Nesslar is also an uncontrollable NPC, and getting it shot down results in a Game Over. Accel is your friend here.

Thankfully, the enemy is also using units that suck underwater, so they're just as affected by the lowered movement and weaker attacks.

Enemy reinforcements spawn near the Nesslar on turns 2 and 8, but if you have any other unit in range, they'll go for you instead. Defeating all enemies before the turn 8 reinforcements will end the map, of course.

Here are the items on the map. They're all minor amounts of money, so don't worry if you end up missing them.

Deploy the troops! There are 10 deployment slots, and Heinel is a forced deployment. I'm using Kenichi, Domon, Ryusei, Watta, Eiji, Akira, Sanshiro, Rai, David, and Fan Li.

Whoops, I forgot to take a screenshot of the map again. Thankfully it's not that interesting, just endless water. This is part 2 of water hell, but at least our flying units can actually fly here. Nothing to it but to advance into Suhl's trap.

The main boss is Suhl's Skullrook. Same dance as before. Heinel and Suhl even have a line of dialogue when they first fight.

This whole chapter is nothing special…

…Is what I would say if I was lying. This stage has a very unique gimmick among all SRW stages. Suhl's strategy comes into effect based on the number of times you attack certain Beast Knights. It's possible to miss out on some of these dialogues by attacking the Beast Knights in a different order, but here they are for your convenience.

The first time you attack the Baizanga or Dokugaga:

Anyway, the fun isn't over yet. An event occurs after Heinel damages Suhl for the first time.

Now, both of the "Decisive Battle" versions of this stage are slightly different. You still have to deal with the Spirit gimmick, but none of the Heinel-related dialogues/events are present. I cannot find anyone online who didn't recruit Heinel, and I just don't have time to play the entire game up to this point, so there's not much else I can say. But then again, there's no reason not to recruit Heinel.

Another underwater-only map. While the Nesslar excels underwater, its best is still extremely mid. Have Sanshiro take point while Bunta focuses on gathering items. At least the Nesslar's movement isn't impaired underwater.

I'll cover bosses in a moment. I just want everyone to take the field first. Also, without Voltes here, I lack the ability to cast Scan.

Speaking of which, enemy reinforcements spawn on the fifth enemy phase.

Speaking of the Death Demon Squad, our main boss on this stage is Gosterro in his Daljan. Normally, he'd be extremely agile and intimidating, but we're underwater. He has a C rank in water. Not exactly the best showing for one of Layzner's main rival characters…

This is a fairly simple map. Eiji can solo Gosterro to the east, then rejoin the main group. Everyone else should make for the ruins to the north and west for their defensive terrain while gathering items.

Now we face the Death Demon Squad in earnest. There's Gosterro in his Daljan, Bone in his Eldarl, Getty in his Dankof, and Manjuro in his Gasshalan. All four of them are extremely strong and agile, and should be taken out as soon as possible. Dump your SP into morale and accuracy-raising Spirits. The grunts aren't strong, so use them to help raise your morale and/or give EXP to some units that may be falling behind in levels, like Trider or Reideen.

Reinforcements also spawn in the south on the third enemy phase.

The map theme when fighting in the Mu ruins is the mysterious-sounding Blue Labyrinth. It reminds me a lot of Golden Sun. The enemy phase theme in the ruins is the tense Codename "Viper". This game's original tracks continue to impress me.

There's no boss dialogue, so here are the items on the map. Make sure you pick up that 20k cash. Thankfully, they're easy to find since they're all in the center of the craters.

This map is a little more interesting than most. We're caught in a crossroads of caves, with enemies to our northwest and west. Retreating to the southeast may sound like an idea, but enemy reinforcements spawn there on the sixth enemy phase, so there's a chance they can shoot someone down without warning.

The Death Demon Squad are back, same as the last stage. Gosterro's AI will have him focus on Eiji exclusively, while the other three will focus on the Daiku-Maryu. Try to use your units as a wall and/or take them out as soon as possible. How well the Death Demon Squad succeed will impact something later in the game.

SECRET ALERT
Layzner Mk-II or Enhanced Layzner and V-MAX
  • If you want the Layzner Mk-II, do not let Bone, Getty, or Manjero damage the Daiku-Maryu.
  • If you want the Enhanced Layzner and the V-MAX ability, let the Daiku-Maryu be damaged by the Death Demon Squad.

We won't get either of the Layzner upgrades for a long while, but this is where you decide which one you'll get.

For the purposes of this LP, I'm getting the Layzner Mk-II. However, I will show off what happens if you get the Daiku-Maryu damaged.

Doing this event will not only shove the Daiku-Maryu to the far southeast part of the map, opening it up for an ambush, but it'll unlock V-MAX for the Layzner.

V-MAX works differently in Shin compared to other games with Layzner. Here, it's a map command like Mazin Power, though it doesn't have a morale requirement. It lasts for three turns, during which Layzner gets an increase to its stats, a beam coat, and a new attack (in which Eiji rams the Layzner into the enemy several times). It also changes the battle BGM to V-MAX. Once the three full turns are over, the Layzner overheats and will be unable to act for one turn. After that, you're free to use V-MAX again!

But we're not going to use this power for some time yet, as we're going for the Layzner Mk-II. So pretend all that never happened. If you're worried about not getting to use this ability, the Mk-II comes with V-MAXIMUM, which acts the same way.

Not only is the Layzner upgrade determined in this stage, but there's another secret upgrade for one of our mechs.

Reideen's secret weapons
Bring Reideen to (10, 13) for an upgrade to the Gorgon Sword, and (13, 9) to unlock God Voice.

Have Reideen break through the fighting to raid the ruins in the northwest. Here are the scenes when you bring Reideen to those squares:

I should note that while the new Gorgon Sword is an upgrade over Reideen's stock version, you also lose all upgrades you put into it. But it is a free attack, so it's worth re-investing into it. God Voice is an extremely powerful 1-range finisher that drains Reideen of most of its EN, but is one of the strongest attacks you can get outside of the SRX, Shin Getter, and a Mazin Powered Mazinger. Contrary to its showing in other games, Akira doesn't seem to be affected by God Voice, so you can use it as many times as you like.

Our bosses for the stage are the Master Gundam (Normal Mode) and the Walter Gundam. Well, I say "bosses", but the Master Gundam and its mysterious pilot don't stick around for long. I'd be surprised if you're able to get to him in time, but if you think you can cheat, it's scripted to always survive at 10 HP. The Walter Gundam can only hit grounded units and units at range with beam attacks, so exploit that weakness.

In Super Mode, the Shining Gundam gets access to the extremely cool Shining Finger Sword attack. However, this doesn't increase any stats, and it also unequips all of your items, so you'll have to re-equip everything after the stage. It's impossible to access Super Mode outside of two plot stages.

Being in Super Mode also replaces Shining Gundam's battle BGM with the always amazing Flaring Fighting Spirit ~ Crossing Over the Detestable Fate. This is the only way to hear this BGM in the game.

For bosses, we've got Master Gundam (Normal Mode) and the Devil Gundam. It's actually impossible to defeat either of them, so I just want to show it off. Because this is a plot stage, Domon, Master Asia, and Kyoji will always be left with 10 HP.

Not even the R-3 Powered… The R-3 has some very long-ranged attacks, but is also extremely frail. Use it to snipe down already damaged enemies.

Overall, this is just a standard rout map. Gosterro might be a problem since he's right in your face at the start, but a few Spirits and he'll go down instantly. If you manage to line up a kill with Aya, she'll gain so many levels that she'll unlock Double Move!

Double Move essentially gives a pilot two movements and actions per turn, and is unlocked when that pilot reaches a specific level. It's different for all pilots, with Real Robot pilots like Eiji getting it in the early 30s, while Super Robot pilots get it in the late 30s. Battleship pilots like Pete do get it, but at a high enough level that it's not feasible to get unless you're doing some sort of Daiku-Maryu solo run.

Enemy reinforcements spawn on the third and sixth enemy phases.
