Bustin' makes me feel - Let's Play MapleStory v251

Put your Let's Plays in here.

Alright, let's get down to business with Darknell. We'll be facing him on Hard difficulty today, which is way, way out of Magilia's league. You know what that means, right?

Image Sure do. Here goes! Angelic Buster Magilia Mode Modification, Geeeet HYPE!!

Image

Image Oh… I feel different.

For our boss fight today, we'll be using RenRenBunBun, who is a Ren—a class that was actualy not implemented in v251 and is a good look at how modern MapleStory classes play.

Image Waitasec, I thought I could only borrow power from other Angelic Busters!

Ren is an Anima Warrior-type class who specializes in mobility and ease of use. She derives her power both from her own dedication to her blade and from the imugi gem of her historical best friend, a snake who became a dragon and then died of an injury she received protecting Ren in their backstory. This gem lets her do some magic bullshit. Like all Anima, she also has a transformation—letting her ears appear or disappear at will.

Image Not really convinced here.

She can transform, she uses magic she got from a dragon, and her playstyle is to get in the enemy's face and beat it in. She's basically an Angelic Buster so it's all good.

Image If you say so…

Image

As a different class, Ren has damage a different Burst rotation, and one that actually starts by binding the boss. Unfortunately, MapleStory is a poorly optimized game and due to a major lag spike Darknell gets to start his attack by the time I hit Bind. Hitting Bind did manage to stun him (the slashes show this; Ren's bind is a class skill rather than Erda Nova, so the effect is different), but by just starting an attack Darknell is helpfully showcasing what his gimmick is: He's not fighting alone! Every time he starts an attack, any attack, one of his five generals shows up and does an attack of their own to complicate things. Neither Darknell nor his allies have any particularly complicated attacks, but they will randomly merge together to create a bunch of patterns that we are forced to react to on the fly.

Which is to say, this is Random Bullshit, GO!!! the fight.

(I also wish to note that this is a nerfed version of the fight. The old one also had status effect balls raining down randomly like Gloom the entire time as well, these were removed because they made everything hit Old Hard Lotus levels of "lol gg")

I will not be discussing what every attack does, because I do not care enough about Darknell.

Image

Anyways, the attack clears and we go into our Burst rotation proper. Ren's main burst is pressing her skill sequence to fire off all her boosts—one of which is an install for the background—and then holding down two buttons. One button is a Mascot-like keydown that deals damage as long as its pressed and then explodes at the end for more damage. The other is Ren's main damaging skills—they have a 15 second cooldown and there's a sequence of four that come out whenever pressed (or held down in this case). A skill on the Burst Rotation actually lets us skip cooldown for it several times in a row, long enough to make it coincidentally last as long as her Mascot cast.

This means Ren's entire Burst is about piling all her damage into about 2 seconds of combo, giving her a lot of flexibility after that. Ignore that thing on the left, it's a white column of damage that explodes upwards after an indicator shows where it'll spawn. They never stop.

Image

Also unstopping are the periodic waves of mooks the boss spawns in. They're invincible for four seconds and deal piddly damage so their biggest issue is stealing damage we want to go on to the boss. This isn't actually a problem anymore, as just about every class's bossing skills either prioritize based on HP or can just hit multiple enemies at once. They're mostly ignorable and they'll die the second their invincibility wears off.

Anyways, once the boss is unbound it's time to go into the end of Ren's Burst rotation.

Image

This is her own Origin skill—each class varies on if they want it at the end or the beginning of their Burst window, and Ren happens to want hers at the end.

Image

With the Origin done, we have enough time to spend about a second holding down Ren's no-cooldown offensive skill (a series of sword slashes in front of her kept up as long as the button is held down), just in time for her 4-hit-combo skill to come off its 15s cd and let us mash it into Darknell's face again at the tail end of her Burst window.

Image

The moment he recovers, Darknell slams his sword into the ground. This is not considered an attack, but it's yet another summon for us to deal with.

Image

He then follows up with a big sword attack. This summons the warrior add, but we dodge everything by just upjumping while moving behind him.

Image

The next attack (another big slash) comes with 2 allies, the thief and the mage. Again, we can avoid everything by upjumping them. They're summoned during the attack's charge period, so technically we need to dodge them first. Unfortunately, we're also dealing with meteors flying in from the top left. This is because of Darknell's sword slam. The meteors do a base 50% HP, but like everything else in this encounter they don't kill us so we don't care.

This is because Ren has already trivialized the entire encounter by summoning that glowing yellow thing in the middle of the arena.

Image

This golden font of victory is known as Decent Holy Fountain, and it's a common 5thjob skill that gives us a 35% heal any time I press up while standing on the fountain (limit 20 times a fountain, 60s cooldown). It's a deployable heal option, it makes attackspam bosses much more survivable without a Bishop to drop the full Holy Fountain, and it is not implemented in v251.

As long as we don't need to drink from it more than 20 times a minute, we're functionally invincible unless we get chain-stunned into death. Even better, Ren's Link Skill naturally reduces all damage she takes—including HP% damage—by 6%. This means that two 50% hits is no longer enough to kill us, and 10% HP hits are actually more like 9. Taking an extra hit to die gives us more time to get to fountain, which gives us the ability to heal to full, which lets us take more hits… Ren is a remarkably survivable class.

Image It's not a 10 second invincibility, but I'll take being unkillable just the same.

Image

Darknell winds up to use his other main sword attack here. Note the sword being parallel to the ground. Once he does it, we need to avoid all the guys who spawn in… and then if we have time it's fine to duck—ducking dodges this one.

Image

He dashes forward a few seconds later, cutting anything between where he was and where he moved to (that wasn't ducking).

Anyways, this boss has a very simple way to solve most of his attacks: When he poses with his sword and the people start spawning, flash jump behind him. This will nearly always dodge the guys who spawn right on top of you, and they're the main ones that can stun you, reverse your controls, or do other really nasty YASD statuses.

Anything else that resolves probably won't kill us through our -6% damage, our automatic potion once every 10 seconds, and our Holy Fountain access between them. We functionally have 150-200% of our healthbar to deal with every series of attacks, and this isn't even including Ren's base-kit healing when damaging enemies (which she also gets, she's remarkably easy to play (and further isn't even mentioning her ability to move while doing her main attack, which she ALSO gets base kit (Ren is SUPER easy to boss with))).

That's not to say "just flash jump" makes the entire fight free, of course. There's still two mook attacks we need to be aware of.

Image

Ah, here's one of them now. Every now and then, the Mad Mage and the… uh… Archer Dude… will spawn on either one of the extreme sides of the arena. The map is so long that you can't see both sides at once, meaning sometimes they spawn just offscreen and fire their ability.

Image

This doesn't really matter for the Mad Mage, who launches a slow-moving orb of magic that will damage and slow us (though slow only effects our walking speed, we flash jump and quick move via skills just fine), it's easy to react to no matter what.

Image

No, the problem is this asshole right here. Also, Darknell is doing his OHKO attack. Just get behind him or stand on top of him. If he's in the extreme side of the arena, it's also possible to dodge by being on the other extreme side of the arena.

Anyways, that asshole right there.

Image

He fires an arrow. This arrow deals 60% hp damage and removes our ability to jump for a few seconds. It's also fast. How fast? Please note that the archer spawned in when Darknell began his charge for his OHKO attack.

Image

The attack has just come out. The arrow is already on the other side of the screen. You will be standing there in Darknell, and suddenly an arrow happens from the other side of the screen and you had better react to it or you're getting hit.

Except you already reacted to the other two guys who showed up, so instead you just get sniped mid-reaction. :lobcorp:

Image

Anyways, we bind and burst Darknell down to ~50% HP. We've officially seen everything Darknell has to offer, from here the only other thing he'll do is just summon more guys whenever he lines up for his attacks.

That said, I haven't told you about the one other base-kit skill Ren gets that actually trivializes this fight even more.

It only matters in this fight, of course, but I think it's really funny that she can do that. So let's talk about ~hitboxes~!

Image

Outside of the meteors, which are a rare thing, absolutely none of Darknell and his mobs' attacks can hit above this line right here. This line is high enough that we can't upjump over it, to get there we have to upjump, blink, and then fly straight up for a short time to clear the enemy attacks.

Image

Here, we have Ren bouncing all the way up to the top of the upjump. From here, we press a button she gets in 1stjob.

Image

It gives us a second jump after our upjump, letting us clear that line. We can now Blink hover up here and just avoid having to deal with any of Darknell's attacks as frequently as once every ~16 seconds (Blink's cooldown).

Ren is one of the very few classes that can escape from the fight vertically like this, and it's remarkably handy.

It's also the last interesting thing I have to say about this fight. Seriously. Darknell is very straightforward as a boss, and once you've seen a few patterns you have seen nearly everything the fight has to give you. It's an exercise in reaction.

Image

So we burst him down to 25%. Every Burst I do seems to cause major slowdown on my PC when playing as Ren… It doesn't happen in every boss, but it definitely happened here. I think Darknell has so much going on that when Ren adds in her own effects the game starts to chug something fierce.

—this is the last time MapleStory has ever done a mob spam boss to this degree, in either case.

Image

I also die once. Technically this is our third death—a potion from the massive pre-boss buffstack gives us a free Heaven's Door, negating 1 death we'd take and restoring us to full HP instead. Ren herself also shares an ability with all other Anima that negates another death and teleports her somewhere random on the map instead, back at full HP.

Ren is stupidly tanky. Three deaths for any of them to actually count, and the boss is under 20% health.

Image

Darknell falls to our next Origin Burst, without doing anything else of note to RenRenBunBun.

Image

He drops nothing of note, but we do get something new now. The light orb on the left and the dark orb on the right are a shiny new GMS-exclusive way to try and deal with drop rates being terrible. They're called (Dawn/Pitched) Whisper Crystals, and they're basically Pity tokens! Every boss that can drop a Dawn set or Pitched Boss set item drops one of these whenever killed, and we can trade 65 Dawn crystals for any Dawn set accessory, and Pitched… We can trade 130 of them for any of the normal Pitched Boss items, 260 for the Emblem that comes from fighting Seren (a level 260 enemy, beyond the scope of this LP), and 390 for the Genesis Badge, a Pitched item that is dropped only by the Black Mage himself—a monthly boss fight.

They are not implemented in v251, but were a good start to fixing the myriad problems with Maple's progression.

—don't think I'm calling them 'good,' though. To be clear: I am not. Crystals aren't tradeable, so if we do every boss that can give crystals in a week we get 7 Dawn crystals and 8 Pitched crystals a week, with 1 bonus Pitched per month for clearing Black Mage. This means one Dawn item every ~10 weeks (which is statistically likely to blow up) and one Pitched item every ~17 or so weeks (which is statistically likely to blow up).

This is in addition to the Dawn/Pitched drops you normally get, of course, but 0+X is still just X.

That's all there is to say about the boss fight, so now it's time to talk about Darknell.

Image

Darknell is like, just a guy, you know? That's his story. He's just a guy who had a really, really bad day.

Over and over and over, for a few thousand years.

He was a military guy who had to relive the destruction of his own country over and over and over again for an incredibly long time due to the magic of some sorcerer who doesn't matter, and when he finally got out he found out that the country had been fallen for years and years and years. The Black Mage told him "Hey work for me 'cuz I'm technically the last person from here" and he's like "Seems legit" and now he's Darknell.

The Epic Bosses were his posse from the forever hell day dimension.

He has nothing to do with Magical Girls, and thus I do not care. :geno:

Image . . . Huh. Well, I guess that's that.

Video: vs Darknell

Image
Image So…

Image

A giant fades into view.

Image Guwaru was right. This... I'm no match for this…

Image
Image You won't escape the Light of Annihilation!

Image I thought Light was the Creation one, not Destruction. That was Darkness, wasn't it?

Image No, no, I created a place for my people, so it's the Dark-ness that Creates things. Like Darknell.

Image No, no, I'm pretty sure it was Light that did the creating.

Image …Whatever! You won't escape it!

Image

Darknell then explodes, because we killed him last episode. Then the screen starts shaking and we fall over.

Image
Image Is this what he was talking about?!

Image I can't move!

Image
Image Orchid!

Image Inform the Alliance! We're still on the path!

*we are not, in fact, on the path.

Image What? You're…

Image I told you. I've got nothing left to lose.

Image
Image Orchid!

We're being forcibly teleported away from whatever's going on.

Image

Which is probably good, because everything fades to white with Orchid still in the middle of it.

Image Ugh! This place…

Image
Image Prepare for the giant's attack!

Image

The giant does… something. It's a ring effect emanating from its center.

Image

It makes explosions, though. Purple explosions.

Image No... When did this...?

Image No damage! I think it's out of range!

Image Phew…

Image Neinheart!

Image Magilia? Where did you come from? Ah, that hardly matters now. I‘m just relieved to see you well. I heard of your hardships from the soldiers who returned from the Labyrinth.

Image Yeah, yeah, great, but what in the WORLD is that?!

Image The water flowed from the black sun, staining Esfera red. From that morass grew the giant we now face.

Image Morass…

Image …Did I say something strange?

Image No, no. Continue.

Image The Genesis Crux has now become the heart of the giant.

Image

This is, as you may have surmised, very bad.

I'm also told it looks like something from Eldin Ring? Or maybe one of the Dark Souls games? I dunno, but for the record the Black Mage Giant of Doom came first.

Image
Image The Genesis Crux is located in the heart of the giant.

Image 'A crimson tear will spawn a giant that swallows hearts…' So the prophecy came to pass. He's declaring himself a god who can destroy the world on a whim.

Image You're saying that I was in the middle of that light just now? That means Orchid was in the middle of that shockwave… …

Image How are the preparations going?

Image Empress, we‘re ready to fire!

Image Then what are you waiting for? Fire!

Image

The cannons fire in sequence.

Image
Image We'll clear a route for you to gain re-entry. It will take some time, so please do what you must to prepare.

Image Wait, Neinheart. Do you know about the path?

Image Is it...?

Image Guwaru and Orchid kept speaking of this path. That we're still on it, and we have to get off of it.

Image …Ahem. I'll tell you, but let's move to a safe place first.

Image
Image Please understand, it won't be easy.

Image Aye aye. I'll find a way.

Image It would seem we have no choice.

Image

The communicator shuts off, leaving Neinheart alone.

Image ...Ahem. Forcing allies into such danger... ls this the only way...?

Image
Image Tell me about the path.

Image It's... part of a much larger puzzle. You see, I've been analyzing data from the Arcane River, Grandis, Magatia, and elsewhere, to determine the Black Mage‘s means. His aims have been clear, but how he has so effectively achieved them has been the true mystery. Until now.

Image
Image It's something we've never truly considered.

To be fair, that is because this is remarkably stupid. :v:

Image What do you mean?

Image Let's start with the basics. His ideal world is one without Transcendents. The Black Mage had to defeat three Transcendents to achieve that goal. But he didn't just defeat them. He kept two of them from passing on their powers, and chose to absorb the third. And somehow, he was able to accomplish this under the most unfavorable conditions. You see, he could not battle the Transcendents directly.

Image
Image He was bound by the laws governing Transcendent powers, and his own powers. Fundamental laws that even he could not break.

Image Hmm… So that's why he needed commanders...

Image
Image Exactly! And even then, it's not at all that simple.

Image His commanders appeared loyal, but in truth each had their own agendas. Magnus, Damien, Orchid, Arkarium, Hilla… They had to be carefully controlled, lest they turn against him to advance their own goals.

Image What about Will?

Image Oh, he a simp.

Image ...Oh!

Image To get these powerful beings to do his bidding, the Black Mage had to convince them that their goals aligned with his, in a way that did not reveal his true intentions. And facing all of those seemingly impossible challenges, he knew exactly what to do. Three worlds became one, two Transcendents vanished, and the third was absorbed to fuel his ambitions. The implications here, coupled with what we've recently learned, are… troubling, to say the least.

Image … (Especially when you consider Damien...) (Damien was going to betray the Black Mage, Alicia got captured, and the heroes stood against him... ) (Nobody supported the Black Mage's goals. And yet...)

Image Remember, this is what the Black Mage said in the Empress's dreams.

Image Your fate is sealed.

Image I do remember that…

Image I wanted to believe the Black Mage was simply boasting. But now his meaning appears clear. I believe he knowingly orchestrated all of this.

Image So... that's the Path of Destiny?

Image
Image …Ahem.

Image ...We cannot dwell on that now. Analysis of the Core Fragment will be finished soon. Grendel the Really Old will have the final piece of the puzzle.

Image One of the Resistance ships needs reinforcements! Its engine room is damaged!

Image Please, we need you now.

Image Heck yeah! I love hunting!

Later, on the Resistance Ship

Image
Image Have you lost your mind?! This bucket‘s barely holding together!

Image
Image If any ship in the fleet should be taking point, it's the White Spear! She's still in mint condition!

Image

Image Wait, so... All ships should push forward, except the flagship and its escorts? Did the Empress give this order? Where is she?

Image Yeah! I'm gonna give her a piece of my mind!

Image She's in battle.

Image Enough.

Image Claudine!

Image
Image You can't expect to win a war if you can't follow simple orders.

Image Much less a war against a god. You follow?

Image Thank you, Claudine. I know the situation is grim, but please persevere. Reinforcements will be there soon.

Image Reinforcements? You're not talking about that dinky little ship out yonder, are you?

Image
Image Oh, that's…

Image Yep, that'll do.

Image How bad is it?

Image We're short on manpower, supplies, and time, and the monsters just keep on coming. You tell me!

Image Where do you need me?

Image Starboard deck. The soldiers will fill you in.

Image

We head off. There's actually fighting going on in the background on this screen, and the map will tell you that there are Resistance Soldiers fighting the… Ascendions, I think they are?

The soldiers are listed as roughly level 100, so they're kind of outmatched.

Image
Image Magilia!! Oh, we're saved!

Image What's the situation?

Image We're outnumbered on the deck, and the monsters are moving to take down our cannons. So yeah... not great. Eliminate the monsters on the ship deck, and rescue our soldiers.

Image On it!

Image Through the right portal, Magilia.

Image
Image We... We haven't lost yet.

We're dropped into an instanced battle, and our goal is to beat 20 of these things.

Image
Image Fire on the giant!

When we do, we have to run to each of the four cannons through the area and talk to the soldier by it to have them fire it off. Once that's done, we leave through the right portal.

Image
Image Thank you! You've been a big help.

Total Kills: 88,541

Image Oh hey, we got a message from Neinheart while you were fighting. They're done analyzing the Core Fragment, and he needs you on the White Spear. I think Grendel the Really Old has something to tell you.

Image
Image Magilia is on their way. Time for us to do our part. You lot remember the plan?

Image Get as close as possible to the giant and fire directly into its heart. If that qualifies as a 'plan.'

Image The Empress has never given us such an impossible task before.

Image She must have a reason. Right now, all we can do is trust her. ...At least, that's what I want to believe.

The same hour, Resistance Ship 1.

Image All set, sir!

Image
Image Fire!

Image Fire!

Image
Image Every shot was a direct hit on the giant! lt's lost 70% of its armor!

Image lt worked! It won't last long, but we'll have an opening!

Image Great! Now get us out of here, that thing gives me the willies!

Image Bring us about! We're leaving!

Image Wait, that's-

Image Everyone, get down!

Image

A purple explosion happens, as the Giant counterattacks… somehow.

Image Aaagh!

Image
Image The soldiers have been caught!

Image Huh? B-but nothing hap--

Image

Something status: happening.

Image Ms. Claudine… I don't feel so good…

Image

Something status: happened.

Image
Image Ah!

Image They became Erda... and scattered.

Image

Image Claudine! Claudine!

Image Get it together!

Image Ship... Get me a ship…

Image What?

Image I need to see Cygnus.

Image
Image Grendel.

Image We're done... analyzing the Core…

Image Please, Grendel... I need to know what this path I'm on is. What is the destiny that the Black Mage sees for me?

Image I can tell that you are afraid. You are afraid that destiny will swallow you whole, and lead you to ruin.

Image

Image
Image Yes... Mortals tend to regard fate with a mixture of awe and fear.

Image This is because the future is unpredictable and mysterious for us.

Image But the Empress can see the future…

Image True, true. There are a few humans who can see into the future. But they only see fragments, not the full scope. They cannot see the process by which their vision will come to pass.

Image I don't really understand…

Image The future is always determined by a singular present. But there are so many moving parts in that present, so many intersections of fate, chance, and free will… Every hand gesture, thoughtless word, and twist of the wind creates and erases uncountable futures. Processing such vast possibilities is beyond any human. It's like a two-dimensional creature gazing into a three-dimensional realm, impossible to even conceive of.

Image And you're saying... the Black Mage found a way to process that.

Image With the right process, even the infinite becomes perceptible. Yes... He…

Image
Image He saw destiny... and changed it.

Image How is that possible?

Image
Image The Demon is worthy of my gift…

Image With a single sentence, he set a new destiny in motion. Countless futures were within his grasp, and he made a choice.

Image
Image And that in turn resulted in everything, from Black Heaven, to Damien, to Aeona.

Image All this time, we've unwittingly danced to his tune. He has led us, tricked us, and manipulated us into producing the future he desired. He has led us onto this path, the Path to Genesis.

Image ...Oh! It can't be... How could we be under his control this whole time?

Reminder: The Path is already broken. It has been broken since before we ever heard of it. They spend a lot of time talking about a thing we've already dealt with, entirely because we don't know we've dealt with it yet.

Image Oh, we fought of our own free will. It was always our decision. We just didn't know who influenced those decisions.

Image No…

Image
Image Look, here. This is a Core Fragment from the giant you defeated earlier.

Image Within this fragment are futures that once existed, but were erased by the Black Mage. l have been examining these futures. Across the many timelines, there is one great constant. Those who did the most damage to his grand design... were the commanders.

Image Ah!

Image Magnus, Damien, Orchid, Arkarium, Hilla… They had to be carefully controlled, lest they turn against him to advance their own goals.

Image The only one who truly accepted his plot was Will.

Image Ah! Right! Because he's a simp, wasn't it?!

Image Precisely. The other commanders rejected the Black Mage's goal. They chose survival.

Image It's just as Neinheart said…

Image Now, look around you. What's left of them now? Who removed them from the board?

Image The Alliance, the heroes… And me…

Image
Image But it's not too late, is it? If we act now, maybe we can somehow…

Image Do you not see? Even now... He allowed us to discover this. Within the beast you defeated. It means our destiny has truly been determined. There's no way... that I can see.. to change fate.

Image Magilia! We're ready to attack!

Image It wasn't a prophecy. It was a promise. He knew what would happen.

Image There's no time! Hurry up and follow me!

Image What... What am I fighting for? What are we lighting for? If our destiny has already been decided, what's the point of this fight...?

Image
Image ......Magilia......

Image
Image Magilia! You must focus.

Image Empress...? Empress, you know that this... this fight is…

Image I know. I've known from the start. It has haunted me endlessly. I'm sorry. Perhaps i should have told you. But I was afraid you would not come this far if you knew. Magilia. Listen to me. You‘re the Adversary. But who are you the Adversary of?

Image The Black Mage…

Image No.The Adversary is the Adversary of Destiny.

Image ...Oh! The Adversary of Destiny?

Image Only the Adversary can counter immortality's fate with the strength of a Seal Stone.

Image A counter to fate...?

Image Don't you see? You're the one piece on the board the Black Mage does not truly control. That's why he's trying to make you lose hope. Because you are our hope for victory. Prove we are not the puppets of gods. Break these chains of fate!

Image Empress! We're out of time!

Image Fight. Win. And come back to us.

Image Empress…

Image That's an order. All cannons, fire!

Image All cannons, fire!

Image
Image

Image Summon the fleet, and close ranks against the giant. We must give the Adversary an opening. The White Spear will push forward to support you. Call the Chief Knights to the deck.

Image Understood!

Image Now, all that's left is…

Image Incoming! Allied transport! Something's not right!

Image
Image Empress Cygnus…

Image Claudine? What are you doing here?

And just like that, we're finally here.

At my favorite scene in the entire Black Mage arc.

Image You're not asking the questions here. What are YOU doing?

See, the Resistance really didn't ever have reason to trust the Cygnus Knights because some shit happened and they don't get along, remember? But they set that aside and decided to cooperate.

They've been really good allies, even! But the Resistance takes care of its own.

Image The Alliance... No, YOU were never like this before. How can the Knights cower in the rear while you push our forces towards annihilation?!

And the White Spear has been sitting behind the rest of the fleet, while Cygnus fires off orders from safety. So she's mad about it!

Image Return to your ship, Claudine. It was a mistake for you to come here.

Image Is it fear? Are you afraid of losing something? Or someone?

Image Claudine, please…

And Cygnus wants her off of this ship, but she won't just tell Claudine why because nobody in MapleStory can communicate their intentions clearly.

Image Our people are being destroyed out there, and we don't have a clue why!

Image Claudine, enough! If you will not leave this ship, I'll have you thrown in the brig.

Image Enough of your nonsense!

Image

They also have a pause here before anyone says anything. It lasts several seconds. You cannot skip it, even if you try. The writing actually tries to make this a thing and I respect it.

Image You think your big, shiny ship and your fancy armor makes you a commander? I see you for the scared child you are. And this battle is no place for children!

Image
Image A-agh!

Image Explain yourself! No more excuses!

Image …Huh? (Beneath her armor...) (She's wounded...) You... You really did…

Image Return to your ship, Claudine... You shouldn't be here…

Image But... you…

Image
Image Cygnus...

Image You... no way…

Claudine then appears to realize what the hell is going on, but because this is Maple we aren't getting any payoff just yet.

Image
Image Argh... I don't think I'm going to make it…

We instead go to Magilia, currently getting her ship exploded by something. This is still part of my favorite scene in the game, though, because…

Image
Image Don't give up!

He is here. :unsmigghh:

Image W-what?!

The ship explodes…

Image

But we don't need it anymore.

Image Flying Fish!

Image Hold on tight! Here we go!

Image
Image Flying Fish, how're you holding up?

He gets us where we're going without incident, as always. You're the best, Flying Fish.

Image I'm sorry, but... I'm not in great shape…

Image Oh, no…

Image Look, don't forget... The world wants you to win... It wants to survive this… So please…

In an instant, he is gone. The one constant we've had, since back in Chu Chu Island. Our ally, our friend, the best character in the Arcane River.

Rest in peace, Flying Fish. We'll take it from here.

Image …Yeah. We'll take it from here.

We've arrived at the final battleground.

So here we are at last… the final battleground, where Magilia and the Black Mage will fight for the fate of everything. Will the universe be destroyed? Will it continue on as before?

The answer to all these questions and more… Right now, on MapleCaptors Magilia!

Image

The Black Mage is the boss of what is now considered MapleStory's midgame. He's got four phases to go through, each of which having a metric ton of HP and regularly spawning shields that prolong them even further. He's a boss so powerful that he is the only boss in the game which provides us with 60 minutes to fight him. Magilia should be facing him in Story Mode—a MUCH easier proposition—but we're not doing that today.

Magilia, if you would?

Image Right. When everything is on the line… That's when I have to call in the REALLY big guns.

Image The world is at stake… But you'll get through it! Because you're Angelic Buster!

Image Right… Let's do this.

Image

Image Angelic Buster Magilia Mode Modification, Geeeet HYPE!!

Image Alright… Just this once, my other self.

Image
Image Attacks here will place a Curse of Creation or a Curse of Destruction on us. If we get hit by both at once, we'll instantly lose a life, so be careful!

I mentioned before that the Black Mage has four phases, and this is technically true, but the first phase is actually against this pair of Knights who are guarding him. The Black Mage himself sits in the back-center of the shot and watches over the fight. There are only a handful of important things to know about this phase:

Foremost, the White Knight's attacks all put us under the Curse of Creation. The Black Knight's attacks all put us under the Curse of Destruction. If we ever get both at once, we instantly lose one life. Lives are tracked using a special emblem.

Image

Any time we would lose a life, one of the red crystals on the outer two layers is removed instead. The red dot in the center is us, and if it's removed then we're out of the fight. This gives us a total of 12 lives to handle the entire boss fight—this is more than any boss since Magnus, but in exchange Black Mage can take 2-3 lives away in an instant if we aren't careful about avoiding his curses.

The second thing is that nobody plays phase 1 "correctly." The desired solution here is to split the two knights' aggro up so that neither party gets hit by both knights at the same time. This means nobody gets hit by twin curses (in theory, anyways), and it allows us to slowly whittle the Knights down over time.

Soloing changes this. When soloing the strategy becomes "Burst the enemy then run and hide in a corner." This lets us avoid their attacks entirely outside of our Burst window, for which we should have the enemy bound and unable to attack. That is how we would have to do it if we were soloing on a character like RenRenBunBun, my second strongest with roughly 80 million Combat Power to her name.

Image

Lithza, my main and our representative today, does not have 80 million Combat Power to her name. Lithza has over 400 million combat power, a chip on her shoulder, and working Angelic Buster music.

Lithza does not have to respect this fight.

This is a problem for the Black Mage, because he is one of the fairest fights in all of MapleStory.

Image
Image Hope, from me to you!

We lead off with a special move known as an Ascent Skill, a special 6th job move that is not implemented in v251. Every class has their own version of an Ascent Skill, and they all have several points in common: On activation they give us a 3 second iframe, they ignore all special enemy defenses (letting them do things like deal full damage to Gloom), and they will hit every enemy on the screen for Big Damage.

There are a lot of other minor things to how they work, but they aren't really important unless you're worried about minmaxing how much damage they do—and you shouldn't be, because this game hates you.

Angelic Buster's Ascent Skill, Surprise Encore, starts off with her signing the camera and dealing a ton of damage to both of the Knights. They share an HP bar, so attacks like this are particularly effective at damaging them.

Surprise Encore is also one of a handful of special Ascent Skills. We can press the button again any time within 30 seconds of the initial activation.

Image
Image Say cheese!

Doing so gives us a second 3s iframe window, and deals additional damage to the bosses. This means Angelic Buster's Ascent skill (like most of her skills) gives her a bit more survivability than the average.

Image

This one-two combo knocks the Knights' HP down to 27.5% immediately.

Image

So we immediately do it again. :getin:

Ascent Skills don't have a cooldown in boss fights. Instead, we get three total uses of the skill to spread out however we see fit over the entire course of the battle. Once all our Ascents are used, they're gone for the rest of the battle—we can use them offensively to rush out a ton of damage, or defensively as an oh shit button that gives us 3 seconds of invunlerability.

Using it against the Knights is technically both of these things; fighting them solo is a one-way ticket to getting chain juggled by the curses and losing a lot of lives.

Image

Anyways, that's the first phase done in exactly three button presses.

Black Mage is kind of a midgame boss now—not because he isn't difficult, but because endgame characters can just do this shit to him.

Image

With a flurry of chains, we move into phase 2.

Image
Image You don't know what I've seen. The chains constricting this world…

Image I've seen a careless god, and people without a purpose. Come, Adversary. It's time to meet your destiny.

Image Let's finish this now.

Image

Image Careless god? People without a purpose? You sound like you've been talking to the same guy I have this whole time.

Image Mayhaps.

I just want to say for the record that I have nothing to do with the Black Mage's whole thing.

Image Don't you have a fight to narrate?

Right, right, back to it. Phase 2 puts us against Black Mage proper, and we can already see one of his attacks: the chains. He fires these off in sets of between 5 and 13, and two patterns can be going on at the same time. Like Lucid's laser patterns, they will hone in on where we are and require constant movement to avoid. They deal ~15% HP damage and on hit will hit us with the Curse of Destruction—hereafter referred to as Black Curse.

These also show up in Part 1, but not in the first ten seconds.

Image

Two seconds later, he then hits us with a status effect that removes our field of vision for up to 6 seconds. Given that we have to dodge things in order to keep from getting both curses on us at once, this can be a problem—but it usually isn't. This is because it has a ~60s cooldown and can only be used once per phase; usually early on in his pattern. Because of this, he doesn't usually have a lot of attacks of both types on the field.

You'll almost definitely get hit by chains and take Black Curse, but the Curse of Creation—hereafter referred to as the White Curse—has attacks that are slow enough that we'll be able to react to them once the blindness lifts as long as we're positioned properly.

Image

We have the second half of our Ascent Skill, though, so we can just iframe through the end of blindness. :v:

Image

After the blindness resolves, I drop Decent Holy Fountain to the right of the Black Mage. Playing to the right around this spot is optimal for fighting Black Mage, because it's the best spot to respond to Meteors.

I do not feel like explaining Meteors yet, but that's why everyone sets up here.

Image

After setting it up, it's time for our first Burst Rotation. Before Ascent Skills this burst was used during phase 1, meaning we'd be stuck in this phase for about 2 minutes at minimum. That's no longer a problem, so we can set it up now.

The Black Mage, meanwhile, is using another attack, his spikes. Those ominous spines on the ground will fire up into large spikes, each one covering the whole area it's over and dealing damage + inflicting White Curse. We can see these even when blinded due to their position, so when they hit we can dodge over to the far left or far right of the screen—they will never appear there.

We, however, do not have to care. This is because Lithza has a Genesis Weapon.

Genesis Weapons are special superweapons that are given for doing a whole lot of very specific bossing, and are the equivalent of Zodiac Relic weapons in FF14 or Legendary Weapons in WoW. They come with two unique abilities. The first of these is a flat 10% increase in Final Damage, period. The second is a bonus 10 second iframe with a 2 minute cooldown—Lithza is using it here, and you can kind of see the white bubble around her that shows she's invincible. This means we can use it to either set up our Burst safely (what we're doing here), or to extend an existing Burst Rotation's safety net out another 10s. This means that between 10 seconds of Bind, 10 seconds of Genesis iframe, and 10 seconds of idol privilege we now have an incredibly safe Burst available to us whenever it's time to go nuclear.

This isn't completely true here, however, as the Black Mage is immune to normal Binds completely. We can only lean on our iframes for safe Bursts here.

Image

…Mostly. Because Origin Skills are supposed to be another tier of power entirely, their Binds are special and work on anything in the game—immunity be damned.

Image

It also absolutely chunks this man's HP, and at this point I'm actually waiting for him to begin another chain pattern before popping my Sparkle Burst iframe.

Image

I get what I want, with the chains inflicting us with the Black Curse. Both curses last for 5 seconds on hit, they each have their own set of effects when they're active. For the Black Curse, it makes us take 15% additional damage any time we are hit. We also can't use any potions to heal our HP while under its effect, but my build for the Black Mage involves abusing Fountain (which works just fine) and a Full Heal 5thjob Special Node that gives us a 100% HP heal every 30 seconds when using a skill. We will not be dying from HP loss in this phase.

More importantly: it increases our Final Damage by 10%. :getin:

Image

Image What is… this music? This divine sound…

Image Like the set list, do you? Then let's call destroying the world a day and have ourselves a concert!

Image Never… The path we are on cannot be resolved so easily, child of dragons.

Image Wait, is that some kind of like, destined thing I don't know about?

Image I think he means you're literally a child of dragons. Novas, dragons, remember?

Image Oh right! I've been so wrapped up in the Magical Girl Idol part of my backstory that I forgot the dragon part of it! Silly me.

The Black Mage has a number of other attacks in this phase, like summoning a pair of black orbs that track us and do Black Curse, a couple of things we'll see again in Phase 3, and a full screen attack every minute that forces us to run to the left, right, or center of the screen before filling everything else with lasers that instantly kill us, also giving him a special white HP bar that acts as a shield on his real HP.

But that doesn't matter here.

Image

Against the might of a fully realized magical girl, the Black Mage can't last a single minute before falling to pieces.

Image
Image The end of the world approaches.

Image

That brings us to the meat of the fight—Phase 3.

Image
Image Ahhh!

Image
Image *huff* *huff* What is this place?

Image It felt like I was pulled into something…

Image
Image Geez took you long enough.

Image Orchid?! Have you been-

Image Fighting all this time? Yeah, of course. But my attacks don't seem to affect him. I can barely make him flinch, and it doesn't seem to last.

Image ...What?
I've been MELTING this guy. He's super weak.

Image I guess the Adversary gets cheat codes. So it looks like you get to end this thing after all. Can you handle that?

Image Yeah.

Image
Image The Black Mage? He's practically a god at this point.

Image Let's go. I'll get my revenge, and you can save your dumb world.

Image
Image Struggle if you must.

Image

We're immediately thrown into Phase 3, and the Black Mage is already using a pair of attacks at the same time.

Image What about the cowboy? Are we just ignoring him, or…?

He's from a star force pity system that's not implemented in v251. Pretend he isn't there.

Image Alrighty!

As for his attacks, the first one is his weird expansion animation. This doesn't deal damage, but instead pulls us closer to him so that he can follow up. The second attack is the Meteors I mentioned back in Phase 2—this attack shows up in both phases and works identically.

Meteors fall from the top of the screen going from right to left.

Image

Upon landing, they will roll either to the right or the left. This is why we want to avoid the left side of the screen in Phases 2 and 3, the raining meteors makes dodging everything remarkably difficult and any hit we take will inflict us with a White Curse. This is particularly problematic in P2 due to how hard it is to dodge the chains, but White is the worst curse to have at this point in the fight by a large margin.

Image

This is because every part of the fight has its own annoying to dodge Black Curse attack. In this phase, it's these lasers! They appear as points of light with a cross-shape to show their range and then fire off, and come in two varieties: Blue and Pink. Blue lasers deal 20% of your HP, and the Pink ones deal 50%.

We also get to see the Black Mage's shield. A couple seconds after the fight begins it spawns in, and it works like Magnus's blue zone—as long as we're outside of it we only deal 50% damage to the Black Mage, and our healing is only 50% as effective. We have to stay on top of him to deal meaningful damage.

Image

This works fine, until the Black Mage makes this stance. When you see him starting to move like this, you need to be ducking immediately. That's because this is his most troublesome attack.

Image

The Black Mage, holder of untold magical power and the ability to see through time itself, has a kick as his most problematic attack. This is because he understands that no matter how strong a wizard you are, eventually you will have to kick something in the face.

This attack inflicts White Curse, knocks us back, and freezes us in place for a moment. This can combo into either one of the lasers to give us a pattern that almost guarantees an instant life loss, and since triggering this effect also locks our skills we can quickly wind up stuck in a situation where we can't easily stop ourselves from bleeding out lives quickly.

Phase 3 is the hardest portion of the fight, and where most failed runs die. However, it's also remarkably fair. Any time we do lose a life, it's our own fault.

Also, Orchid technically helps us through this phase? Despite her best efforts she deals a total of 3b damage per line, though, and she attacks much more slowly than we do.

Image

Because of the kick, this phase has a sort of flow to it. First off, we want to drag him over to the right again. This is because the center of the screen has a lot of random other things inside of it, some of which I don't actually know what does because I always drag the Black Mage over to the right like this!

There's like, orbs, they reverse controls or slow you? They're annoying, just drag him to the right!

After that it's a simple my turn-your turn kind of flow. Between every kick, we can fire off five casts of Trinity—six if our timing is perfect.

So five, unless you want a boot to the head.

Then, he starts an attack. If it's a kick, we duck. If it's his suck-in attack, we can get off one more Trinity, then wait for the kick to start, and then we duck.

It is important that we bait the kick, because he will not use it if there isn't a target to hit with it. If he does not use the kick, he will instead do something else—and his only other move that requires a casting animation is summoning more pink lasers, so it's basically always that.

Image

Meanwhile, mechanics happen and it's our job to react to them as necessary. Dodge the lasers if we can, and over here on the right there are only two attacks we really need to worry about for most of the fight. That explosion is not one of them—it's the Black Mage creating a platform. These platform-creation explosions deal damage and add a White Curse, but they don't spawn over here on the ground floor of the right side.

You're on the right side, right?

Right.

Image

Now THIS we have to react to.

Image The red explosion on me?

No, that's related to the White Curse, I'll explain in Phase 4.

Image The… spikey red orb, then?

No, that's the thing I mentioned that goes from down to up slowly, and never gets this far to the right. Which is where you should be in this boss. On the right.

The important attack is the raining white orbs, which drops in a consistent pattern at a consistent rate from one side of the screen to the other. They deal damage and inflict a White curse, and are in Phases 1, 2, and 3. To avoid them, we just have to walk through them.

Image

To do that, I generally wait for the one next to the orb I'm under to explode on impact with the ground, then I hit my Pink Pummel to dash into safety. This works to avoid the attack, but it's important not to use a dash move to get back into melee with the Black Mage.

If we do, the odds are very high that we'll mistime it and wind up dashing in on him as he starts winding up a kick, getting a boot to the head for our trouble. Do not dash in on the Black Mage. Walk. Just walk.

Or play something else, that's honestly the smarter move.

Image

And now… we have a problem.

At regular intervals (either 1 minute or 2 minutes, I forget), the Black Mage will perform a screenwide attack, and in this case he is using the "down" attack, as we can see from the orange energy around him. This is very inconvenient because we need to jump, have Black curse, and the Black Mage is still allowed to attack during his screenwides so if we jump right now we can't blink-hover high enough to get out of kick range—if he kicks, we're going to eat a lifeloss, eat a skill lock, fall on the floor, and die to the screenwide while stunned!

My plan instead is to walk to the right and then upjump, and if I die I die.

Image

I die. Honestly, a perfectly acceptable outcome—better one life than two. In hindsight I could have dashed during the startup from BM, then I would have been fine to upjump and hover out of his range. Alternatively, he could have used his "up" attack, visible by a white aura that flows upwards, which I can completely negate by abusing Soul Resonance's 2s iframe.

But it's fine, we have enough damage that we could sit here and let the death timer tick towards empty while waiting for our Burst Rotation to be off cooldown.

Image

So we do that.

Image I've got 53 seconds on cooldown, though?

That was due to a mispress. I need to swap back to RoR using a ring swap button we have, and we can only do that alive.

Ring swapping is beyond the scope of this course, as it was not implemented in v251 while also being removed soon from current-day maplestory for being annoying as hell.

Image Ahh, got it.

Image

Revive and hit the ring swap button (visible by that red ring over Lith's head).

Image Black orb right overhead! Is that a problem?!

Image It's me. Don't worry about it.

Image

Walking back into range (and ducking to avoid the kick, because it is all about the kick), we start laying into the Black Mage again. Every time he uses his up or down screenwide attack, he's given a white HP bar that acts as a shield on his actual HP. Weaker parties back in the day could only break this on burst, meaning the rest of the fight was just waiting for cooldowns to be allowed to scrape away at the boss's HP again.

Image

Speaking of Bursts, ours is up. Chaos erupts around us, but I let the genesis iframe rip and set up in perfect safety. There are players who swear by using the genesis invincibility to extend our Burst window instead of just using it to set up safely, but they do not play this game as a joke.

I do not intend to be good enough at dodging and weaving buttons that I will ever need it, that would require I try—which, to be clear, is exactly the same as losing.

Image I would appreciate you trying when MY LIFE IS ON THE LINE!!

You've got eleven left, it's fine.

Image

Our Burst knocks the Black Mage down a peg, eating through most of his remaining HP while we're invincible. We also get to see his other center orb attack I mentioned earlier, the orb circled here. It zigzags slowly down the screen and will Black Curse and some status effect on hit… I don't remember because I haven't been hit by it in years—it can't make it over to the right side of the screen.

You did set up on the right side of the screen, right?

Image

Meteors come after this, and we have a very easy way to avoid them now. One of the platforms the Black Mage can create every rotation is up here in the top right, and it's really handy when it shows up. We can grappling hook up on top of it, and stand there to avoid the Meteors. Black Mage can still kick us so we have to react to it—but we can do that with a simple jump and nothing comes directly from above here except meteors—which aren't raining while the meteors we need to dodge are rolling on the floor, so this is actually a foolproof strategy.

Image

Shortly after, he summons his Angels of Darkness. This comes complete with a text popup to let us know it's happening, and he calls out 1-6 of these little staticy guys that shoot energy balls in a predetermined direction towards the center of the screen. They cannot be damaged by us, and their energy balls are on the background layer, meaning that Black Mage and all of his effects can cover them up.

This is not a problem, because we set up on the right side of the screen and thus we are out of range of every one of the Angels' shot lines. As long as we're over here and staying up close and personal with the Black Mage, we can really ignore half of the fight's mechanics.

Speaking of, that shield sure has gotten smaller, huh?

Image

While the Black Mage does his "up" screenwide attack, let's talk about it.

As the fight goes on and his HP goes lower, the Black Mage's shield shrinks twice—this is its smallest form, and at this point we have to be basically right underneath him to be doing full damage. This is a fight that encourages you to get really comfortable with weaving in and out of his multitude of kicks and just fearlessly pound him into the pavement—doing so lets us sit on a spot like this and avoid many of the troublesome mechanics while speeding through the fight.

Image

The "up" screenwide resolves by a bunch of white orbs forming at the top of the screen. They fall down, covering everywhere, and explode on contact with either a platform or the ground to kill anyone nearby instantly.. Because the entire attack comes out quickly, we can avoid it with Soul Resonance. If we weren't playing the best class in the game and had no iframe to burn on it, we would instead have to stand under a platform and pray that we don't catch a stray from an orb beside it landing too close to us.

Image

Anyways we die because I started Reso too early and ran out of the 2 second iframe before the balls stopped landing. Oops!

Image

With the boss having shown us all his tricks I decide now is the time to use my last Ascent skill on him. This burns through ~12% of his HP between the two hits, leaving us with not a lot left to burn through before we're out of the hard part of the fight.

This is also where I get impatient, and that's a bad thing because impatience in the Black Mage fight means you eat deaths.

Image

For instance: here we are under White Curse, with Meteors coming at us to deal bonus damage and a laser spawning nearish to us. The correct answer here would be to have already dropped a Fountain, and to run forward slightly and tank the meteors while drinking—this lets us avoid the laser, live through the meteors, and stabilize our position from there.

Image

Instead, I reflexively upjump the meteors and right into another waiting blue laser.

Image

This costs us two lives at once, from the Curse crossover and also just dying outright. This in turn causes me to tilt, which feeds into the vicious cycle of P3. It is a fair fight. It is also not one that we can afford to play badly.

Image

So I hop right back in to melee while he's doing his suck-in attack, and see the white orbs falling alongside knowing that this attack will be followed by a Kick. The plan is to avoid the meteor right next to me, then dash out of the way and duck.

Image

I misjudge the distance of the first orb and get bonked, that's White Curse.

Image

At which point I duck to avoid kick, and see a laser spawn right on top of me. Unfortunate! What do you do?

Honestly at this point I should probably just sit there and suck it up then get back to work. Oh well. But that's not what I did.

I stood up.

Image

Standing up let the Black Mage kick me. I'm already White Cursed, so I can't get it again. This goes and shoves me back and out of the way of the blue laser, preventing me from losing a life even though it stuns me for a second. This is a remarkably clever move!

Image

…Except there's another blue laser right where he shoves us, so I lose another life. :negative:

Image

Walking back over, pink lasers spawn. I try to jump over them with the right timing to avoid them (since I'm Skill Locked from the Curse crossover that's my only option).

Image

Image Goodbye, child of dragons.

Image Ahh, beans.

I did not respect the kick. :eng99:

Image

The resulting shot rockets me to the left and through a purple laser, and then a second purple laser.

Image

So we die, again, again.

This sequence started at 55:55. By 55:42, we have lost a total of five lives. That is how quickly a Black Mage Phase 3 can spiral out of control.

Image

Anyways I respawn and abuse my 3 seconds or so of courtesy invincibility to throw Lithza right back into the fight, because everything seemed to be calm enough to try and get back into a rhythm.

Image

Lithza does lose one more life to a kick that knocked us to the left instead of the right due to poor positioning, meaning we then ate a shot from an Angel of Darkness that added on a Black Curse for the Curse crossover.

Image

But I do manage to land my Soul Resonance properly on the next up screenwide, avoiding an additional death.

Image

I then pop Burst to get rid of the last 5% of his HP. This was a waste. I should not have done this. It was foolish. But we're out of Part 3 at last.

Image

Part 4 starts with white energy gathering into the center of the screen.

Image

It then explodes in a big bang that drags us all into the Really Final Battlefield For Real.

Image
Image Space itself seems to be changing…

Image Well, yeah. Genesis is about to begin. After that, everything becomes nothing. Listen, when he's weakened, you've got to summon up the power of the Adversary and deliver the final blow.

Image The power of the Adversary? But…

Image Are you really this dense? You failed before because the Seal Stone only activates off of powerful determination. So get it together and focus! You‘re the only one who can stop this now. You have to be ready to sacrifice it all. Even your life.

Image I'll do everything I can to end this, even if that means giving up my life.

Image Good. Then…

Image Orchid?

Image What? I'm just... gonna rest... a bit…

Image Orchid?!

Image

Orchid falls over. She's been fighting constantly since just after Darknell, after all.

Image
Image This void... Am I the only one left...?

Phase 4 starts with a curveball: each member of the party gets to fight their own copy of the Black Mage, with all of them having a shared HP gauge. There are some quirks to how it works, and you're not really alone as buffs from a Bishop can hit you if you'd be standing in range, but this is a solo fight so that doesn't matter.

We've also been given an NPC button skill like with Will or Lucid, introducing a key mechanic for this last phase.

Image

When we start the fight, our character will have either a white or black aura placed behind them at random. If we are white, it is of vital importance that we press that NPC button… once.

Image

This changes the aura to black, and now we never need to press it again.

Image

Ikaruga is a Japanese Shoot 'em Up game originally released to arcades in December 2001. In it, we fly around using a ship that can change between black and white at the push of a button in order to avoid complicated patterns of bullets—we become invincible to the color of bullet whose aura we have.

Seventeen years later, MapleStory would go on to copy this mechanic exactly for the climactic final phase of the climactic final boss for its entire main storyline.

Image

Because of that, all we really have to do is go into Black aura to become immune to Black shots (and also dodge all Black curses). The only things that can hurt us most of the time are tiny White shots that deal 10% HP damage and White explosions that deal 50% HP. He'll randomly slow us, but that doesn't matter—we cannot be hit by Black attacks, we cannot get Black cursed, we cannot lose lives to Curse crossover any longer.

As for tanking, we can do that remarkably well thanks to the effects of the White curse and our good friend the Decent Holy Fountain.

White Curse has three effects. First of all, it lowers our final damage by 10%. Secondly, it periodically spawns an explosion on us that deals 15% HP damage. However, in exchange for this it restores our life by 4% every second.

The only way we can die here is if we get careless and eat an explosion before running facefirst into a pattern of 4-shot stacks of White bullets.

Image

I immediately get careless and eat an explosion before running facefirst into a pattern of 4-shot stacks of White bullets.

Anyways, Black Mage has White and Black bullets and they come out in a number of patterns. Most of them are just circles around him with varying levels of thickness, and one of them is the aforementioned 4-shot stacks, targeted right towards where we are standing.

Image

Like so.

Image Umm… what about the trees?

Oh right. Those. Every 30-35 seconds, the Black Mage will do a screenwide attack. Branches appear that are either black or white, out of portals that are also either black or white. We have a Black aura, so we want to be standing in a black one when the attack resolves.

Image

The wrong color will instant kill us, so just don't stand there.

Image

It also spawns a white HP shield. You have now seen every part of this fight.

The entire battle from here consists of sitting on fountain, drinking until an explosion or 4-stack of white bullets pattern starts coming our way. We then avoid those (or drink through them but that can be risky as we can run out) before returning to fountain.

Image

Lastly, we swap sides of the field when the Black Mage is between 4-stack patterns if he gets too close to us. Wait for bursts, fire as available, focus on not dying.

That's it. That's the fight.

Most of the time, if you make it to Phase 4 you will win the fight. This is even true for me, and all the white and black and effects kind of give me a headache, which makes things a little harder than it should be.

Image

I've learned to deal with it by letting my eyes unfocus like when I'm playing a shmup, preventing them from straining and letting me maneuver around well enough to get through it.

Image

Our Origin's off cooldown so it comes out here again, letting us fast forward through most of the Black Mage's HP bar through sheer damage.

Image

The game then slows down from Frames per Second to Seconds per Frame again, and right in time for a 4-stack pattern to come flying at me.

MapleStory is a game made by Nexon, a company with ~5-10,000 employees.

There is no excuse for this, and if I could mod the game to fix this lag, I'd do that too. :colbert:

Image

Anyways, the Burst deletes most of Phase 4's HP, and we're out in about two and a half minutes.

Image

Upon being defeated, the Black Mage curls up on himself and then disappears.

Image
Image Orchid! Orchid!

Image This must be stopped. The Genesis Crux will be revealed. And if he returns to the Genesis Crux, that will be the end of our world.

Image

That big black ball is the Genesis Crux. It serves as the treasure box in the Black Mage boss fight, and I didn't get anything noteworthy from breaking it open.

Image
Image (Only the true power of the Adversary can destroy the Genesis Crux now.)

The screen is shaking as Bad Things loom on the horizon, despite us kicking the Black Mage's butt. Somehow.

Image How does THAT make any sense?!

Like this is the first time we've done a boss fight that ended in us somehow still losing. Remember Will?

Image Ugh, don't remind me.

Yeah, he sucks. Anyways.

Image

QTE!

Image

Once again, the power of the Adversary shines gold for a moment… then explodes. Oops.

Image I failed? But why...?

Image
Image Gaah!

And then the Genesis Crux rumbles harder as the screen fades to white.

Image Nngh…

Image

Magilia is knocked flat once again as the glow recedes.

Image No, I can't... not yet…

Image

Another QTE! This one is special, it requires a lot of presses and the gauge also regularly lowers so it feels like a little bit of a struggle.

Image One more time…

Image

Image That's the thing from when the Black Mage attacked earlier… Magilia, you're being turned into Erda!

Image No! This can't be!

Image
Image Did you think that you had escaped the path?

Image …Oh!

Image You will not live to claim the true power of the Adversary. That is your destiny. Your future has been decided.

Image This very moment was destined? Even this? Even now? Black Mage! What…

Image

The Black Mage's essence flows into the Genesis Crux, until he fades to nothing.

Image He disappeared into the Genesis Crux… So... this is how it ends? Was my determination... not enough? I couldn't even take one step off the path of destiny…

Image …Oh, so now you're not going to say it?! Liar.

Image
No, you did. Just one step. though.

Image
Image This voice... Tana?!

Image
You do have the determination to see this through.

The world needs you. Everyone is counting on you to stop this. And we don't need someone who's given up.

Image Ah!

Image
Image So what matters is not the will to sacrifice…

Image

Image But the will to survive.

Image

The Adversary's Power fires up.

Image

And the Genesis Crux starts shaking everything even harder.

Image Ah!

Image
Image It's returning!

Image Get back!

Image

Orchid tries putting up a shield or something, but everything fades to white.

Video: vs Black Mage

User avatar
Previously, on Faltering Girl Enver Magica,

Image

We died, or something.

Back at the Outpost

Anyways, we head somewhere else immediately.

Image

The goddess statues stand at the Outpost, same as always.

Image

Suddenly, blue light shines from their swords and a beam goes off into the sky.

Image

The beam approaches the heart of the giant, and disappears within it.

Image
Image It's time.

Image
Image Pull the fleet back.

Image The White Spear will proceed alone. I leave the rest to you, Claudine.

And now we get to why Cygnus really didn't want Claudine to stick around on the White Spear.

Image Of course, Empress. All non-combatants, disembark! This is it!

Image
Image White Spear, full speed ahead! Into the heart of the giant!

This is because she intended to ram it into the giant. :getin:

Oh, did you think my favorite scene in the game was over? Nope, this is still part of it. Cygnus has negative fucks and 0 fear, it's actually awesome.

Image We shall be the spear that pierces the gods themselves!

Image

GOD. DAMMIT. NEXON. :negative:

No, no, it's fine. I fixed AB music. I can fix. A damn. Cutscene.

VIDEO: Limina Story

This video wasn't easy to get my hands on thanks to Maple's complete revamp of the entire Arcane River questline, but thankfully a youtuber called Aesperity had the entire plotline uploaded with some of the grinding cut out. In english!

Anyways it ends with us stabbing the Black Mage's body but again with a sword and then everything goes white.

This is the entire reason I had Magilia hold a flaming sword the entire time, just to keep this one cutscene plausible.

Image

Image Oh… I'm alive. Nice!

Image Either that, or we're both dead.

Image Nope! Staying optimistic!

Image Was that it...?

Image
Image Magilia? Magilia?!

Cygnus comes running into the nothing.

Image
Image

Image Magilial You've done it!

Image Wha?!

Image

Uh-oh. We've seen this before.

Image Hey wait! What about the 260 area?! What about Darmoor?! What about Grandis?!

Image Oh…

Image

And then Magilia fucking exploded, apparently.

Image How… How can this be…?

Image
Image The giant is moving again!

Image Empress. We have to get out of here.

Image

Image It's hopeless. The engine is scuttled, and the giant's closed back up.

Image … Here. Let me use your ship‘s power.

Those were the Cygnus Knight job instructors, folks. This is apparently the first scene with them in the entire endgame.

Image
Image How long has it been?

Image Ten minutes since the giant fell silent.

Image Perhaps we should direct our fire away from the heart…

Image But you were the one who rejected that idea earlier!

There is a future arc where Claudine is on an enemy ship and has her allies open fire exactly where she's at, I just want to point out "Fire at the place where the allies are" has never actually been anything these people care about.

The leaders of Maple World's main factions are a little bit crazy.

Image Well... The situation…

Image Neinheart... Get it together. The soldiers don't need to see you like this.

Image ...You're right. Please excuse me.

Image I'm worried about them, too…

Image Look! Over there!

Image

Something blasts out of the Giant's heart.

Image Is it...?

Image Up ahead! Our ship is leaving the giant's heart!

Image Quickly, covering fire!

Image All cannons, fire!

Image Empress…

Image It's going to be all right. Relax.

Image Communications are open!

Image

Image Empress!

Image We have destroyed the Genesis Crux.

Image Did you hear that? They did it! Hooray!

Image … There was…

Image
Image Where am I...?

Seems like Magilia isn't quite dead yet.

Image Did I... die?

Image
Image The White Mage?!

Instead, she's stuck in the erda with this guy… The Black Mage, before he was the Black Mage.

Image
Image I've been waiting a very long time to meet you, you know.

Image

Image I‘m serious. You and I have been locked in this struggle for ages. We have a bond in that.

Image A bond? Is that why you're here? What do we have to talk about?

Image Well, mainly I want to thank you. You've put an end to something that has gone on for far too long.

Image You... wanted this to end?

Image Immortality becomes a prison, once you realize what it entails. I couldn't end this myself, you know.

Image
Image A prison of immortality…

Image The powers of a Transcendent prevent them from ending their existence. Ironic, isn't it?

Image But... Wait. You wanted a world without Transcendents. Including…

Image ...Me. That's right. You see the chaos l wrought over my long existence. People with that kind of power should not exist. And that's why I needed you. We were both bound by destiny. But you were the one who could break those chains... yours and mine.

Image

Image
Image Now, I have a question for you. Your actions in Esfera, when you refused to take Tana's life... That was the turning point.

This happened before the Path was ever mentioned. It was also the only thing that mattered.

Remember kids, as long as you don't kill the writer's special sparkle baby you too can avert the destiny of Rocks Falling on Everyone, Killing Them.

Image That was the moment you broke free of the path I had laid out for you. So what I want to know is, why? Why did you make that choice, knowing it would lead to almost certain doom?

Image Well… I couldn't take her life, no matter the cost. That's not what a hero does. Our doom wasn't certain. And as long as there was a way to save her and everyone else, I had to try.

Image … Hm... Perhaps I lost something of myself when I became the Black Mage. Perhaps I lost sight of the value of life, in my pursuit of a perfect world. Without that, my quest could never succeed. And with that, you were able to defeat me. I asked you the question, but I might already know the answer. I went through a similar situation as well. The moment I was reborn into a Transcendent, I became a pawn of the Overseers. While trapped in my destiny set by the Overseers, I tried to go against them… I finally succeeded in carving out a future I desired. It's ironic that the destiny I could not accept was being forced upon you. Even if someone set the path of destiny… The belief engraved deep within your heart... The soul created in that manner… That does not waver nor does it bend to another's will. It's the result of having lived a life… You really were just like me. A person who can go against destiny. You must have realized the beauty of the world in your adventures. You met many people and walked alongside them. And all those experiences... made you evolve. A being who doesn't forget to live in harmony with others even in the face of despair. A being whose heart leads the way by shining a light in the darkness.

Image … Hm... Perhaps I lost something of myself when I became the Black Mage. Perhaps I lost sight of the value of life, in my pursuit of a perfect world. Without that, my quest could never succeed. And with that, you were able to defeat me.

Image Didn't you just say that..?

Image I thought it was impossible to do that as a mortal. I tried to accomplish it by going so far as to borrow power from the gods… The moment I gave up on being mortal, that's when I lost my way.

Image Ah! My fingertips... my hands! What's happening to me? Where am I going?

Image It seems our time together is coming to an end, I'm afraid.

Image Wait, if me sparing Tana in Esfera changed everything… Then why did you keep fighting?

Image … When you discovered that I had put you on this path... When you began to doubt your free will... What did you feel?

Image … I felt despair. I felt powerless. I thought mortals didn't have the power to change destiny. That we couldn't change what the gods had written for us.

Image Then why did you go?

Image One shouldn't give up just because it's difficult. Yes... What I felt must have been rage. And at the same time, the will to live. It's not some grand dream of wanting to protect the world. It‘s just the will to fight for what I believe in… My free will. My belief. And that unwavering faith. Destiny isn't set, not by anyone. I create my own, every day I live.

Image The higher beings might see your resistance as futile. Yet you won't give up?

Image No... They might think I'm pathetic or weak. But… ...that doesn't mean I should accept their path for me without question.

Image I see.

Image Now I know a little of what you were thinking. How it feels when other people take away your free will. But what you did about it... that was evil, all the same.

Image … The bond of destiny, a prearranged path... I'm sure we did feel the same way about it. When I realized I was losing my free will, I felt something else too: rage. l was always lonely. I tried to decide my own path, but I wavered the moment I couldn't trust myself. You formed relationships with countless people on your adventures. They must have helped you in your moments of doubt.

Image Empress Cygnus... and Tana…

Image … I thought the plan was perfect, but I started to question it. It was at that point when you, the Amnesiac Temple Keeper I had defeated, appeared. And at that time, I thought it was the end of the world. Because sending the variable called Kao to the past to change history… that can only be done once. … So I thought long and hard about it. Then I thought about you and the rest of the world. Many things have changed the course of history. Good-natured beings gathered to change the world for the better… They weren't being led by fear… ...rather, they had a true leader. Unlike me… You responded to anger with kindness. Life is full of trials and tribulations. But any trial can be overcome if beings like you gather together and cooperate. That is why... if the emotion you felt is genuine… And that's just it. If I had given up, you never would have found that strength within you.

Image What do you mean...?

Image

The screen begins fading to white. Our time really is up.

Image You've done what I could never do. Never forget that strength… The world that good-natured beings like you will create… It will be more perfect than anything I could have made. Thus, I leave the rest to you.

Image
Image Descendant of dragons.

Image But… That didn't make any sense! You were just… rambling!

Image …Ah. It was the first real, new conversation I've had in millenia. It was a given.

Image Then summarize in five words or less! Why did you keep going even if the plan was in tatters from the start?!

Image Because… … … I'd committed to the bit.

Meanwhile, outside of the Erda Flow…

Image
Image A noble sacrifice, then. I know words aren't enough to express my thanks…

Image But…

Image Wait... Hold on. I think… Yes, I just saw something else come from the giant's heart!

Image
Image Magilia?!

Flying Fish?! :stwoon:

Image Cover them! Covering fire!

Image All cannons, fire!

Image All cannons, fire!

Image This is our chance, let's go!

Image Okay!

Image
Image Magilia!

Image

A short flight later, and we're back on the White Spear with everyone else.

Image
Image I came back.

Image Just as you asked.

Image
Image You've done well.

Image Just as I asked.

Image
Image The giant is done for!

Image Ah!

Image
Image It's true!

The Giant is actually breaking apart and dissipating in the background, here.

Image Now that the heart is gone, it seems to be returning to Erda.

Image Then that means…

Image The war is over. We must all prepare to return.

Image
Image Are you going?

Image
Image This isn't the kind of place you'd want to hang around, right? Especially with stupid Claudine glaring at me.

As a reminder to the audience of things they never saw: Orchid ran the Black Wings, who oppressed Edelstein, which is Claudine's town and the home of the Resistance.

They're not exactly on speaking terms.

Image Guwaru said that you're shortening your life by using your power without Lotus.

Image Huh? Oh, that... Why? Does that bother you?

Image

Image Yeah, I think I'm about done. Not much left in me anymore.

Image
Image Geez.. I might be down to just 100 years or so.

Image ...What?

Image What? Did you forget I'm a Spirit of Darkness or something? Still, 100 years... Maybe living like a human won't be too bad.

Image
I want my concern back.

Image Anyway… See you around…

Image Huh? What?

Image
Image

Image

Image
Image I said see ya around, dummy.

Orchid exits the plot here, having filled our Rival Magical Girl Who Is Also a Tsundere quotient for the story.

Image
Image Is it finally over?

Image Get on. You should at least say goodbye.

Image What do you mean, 'goodbye'?

Image

The screen begins to pan to the right, over the other soldiers.

Image

And as it does, energy begins to condense next to them.

Image

And the people who poofed into Erda… begin to come back.

Just this once, everybody lives!

Image

We also get to see two thirds of the Esfera trio, with a note that Melange is Missing.

Image

People continue to pop back in as we go over everyone who helped us on this dramatic mission—most of whom we have met like, twice.

Image

We finally stop the scrolling shot when Cygnus is center-screen.

Image
Image We pulled through... this time.

Image Indeed.

Image It's because we were here for each other. And… We have her on our side.

Image

Enter Magilia, riding a fish.

Image
Image Farewell…

And we fade to black.

Image
Image The Black Mage…

And we leap right into the next quest, back at the outpost.

Image
Image Magilia, you're back.

Image Have you gotten some rest since defeating the Black Mage?

Image I sure did. It's been ages since I've been able to sleep like that.

Image I'm glad to hear that. We'll be needing you at your full strength.

Image Is... there some kind of problem?

Image While our great struggle has finally ended, and peace has been restored to Maple World… There are people waiting for you.

Image ! Oh…?

Image Ha! You nervous little landlubber!

Image That was rude, Neinheart.

Image We've all been waiting. All of Maple World owes you a debt that can never be repaid.

Image Our allies from Grandis played a major role in bringing peace to Maple World. You have our utmost gratitude.

Image We were fortunate that the situation on Grandis was quiet enough for us to come. There's no telling what will happen next, but this was a nice enough break.

Image When Grandis needs help, Maple World will be there. Just as you were there for us, Magilia. Magilia, I have something to give you. Speaking on behalf of the entire Alliance, please accept this gift as a token of our gratitude, Magilia.

Image

We're finally given the medal of completion for Limina, and our long quest to defeat the Black Mage is over. Maple World is saved, and there's absolutely nothing ominous looming in the background to worry about.

Image
Image Zzz... Hmm…

Image And when determination is swallowed by the deepest dark, a destiny will be written. Ha! I found this neat book... Hmm… And perhaps a way to thwart destiny… I hope this will be to your liking…

Image
Image Gerand Darmoor…

So, now that we're done with the Black Mage plot, there's one final piece of content. It varies based on what class it is, and it serves as kind of a wrapup to their own personal story.

Image Personal… story..?

You know, that thing you haven't had since level, like, 70.

Image Oh yeah! That was forever ago, and I mostly just remember the hat.

Image It was a pretty nice hat, all told.

Image Mmm, alright! Let's see about that conclusion!

The conclusion is under [Aftermath] After That Day in the quest menu, and is the final properly personalized point of Angelic Buster content in all of MapleStory.

Image
The Day After

Image
West Pantheon Plains

Image Kaiser. What brings you here?

Image Ah, Angelic Buster. I came to see Tear, but I guess that's not happening.

Image Oh, really? Tear, um, isn't here right now. (Oh, if only I‘d gotten here a little earlier!)

Image So... what brings you here?

Image Me? Oh, um, I was looking for Tear too. Haven‘t seen her in a while.

Image Ah. Yeah, I haven't seen her around at all lately. She's probably off crying somewhere.

Image (Is that what he thinks of me?)

Image
Image You think so? I think she's been doing great on her own.

Image Really? I thought you hadn't seen her in a while.

Image Well... it FEELS like it's been a while. She and I are, uh, really close.

Image Oh, I didn't know that. Well, anyway, I‘d better go.

Image
Image (Hey, wait!)

Image
Image What?

Image She wanted me to tell you something. About the rock, that shiny rock at the hideout? Tear wanted me to tell you 'thanks' for that.

Image … Okay... Did she say anything else?

Image Urn... she really likes it, it's really nice… And she said she was touched. That you gave it to her. Because it's very pretty. She said all that. All of it.

Image Well, technically she did…

Image Shh!

Image ... Did she look happy?

Image Oh, yeah! I'd never seen her happier!

Image ...Good.

Image (He looks even more sad...)

Image
Image It used to be that Tear would, well, tear up if I gave her a gift like that. Sometimes, she'd practically cry her eyes out.

Image But I did love the way her eyes would shine when she was teary-eyed with joy.

Image

Image ...Anyway, yeah. Um, glad she‘s happy. She doesn't need me anymore.

Image I... She didn't say that…

Image I'll see you around, Angelic Buster.

Image
Image Waitl You can't leave yet! What if Tear comes by? You could talk to her yourself!

Image I'm just glad to know she‘s okay.

Image

And so, Kaiser ollies out.

Image
Image Tear, you got something on your mind?

Image Yeah. Kyle said something that made me realize... I used to be kind of a wimp... Not 'kind of.' l was a total wimp. I cried over everything. Not my fault, it's just how I was, I had a lot going on...

Image You must've had a big, open heart.

Image Hmph, you could call it that, I guess. Kyle didn't mind. I think he liked looking out for me. And one time, when l was really upset, he gave me some good advice. He said, no matter how dark and stormy it might get, the sun always comes to chase the clouds away.

Image That's true. Even the worst storms pass eventually. ...Whoa. That's so wise. Someone should put that on a poster.

Image Yeah!

Image So your heart's still big, but now it's strong, too. You're a hero, kid. Everyone says so. What‘s next for you?

Image I…

Image
Image I'm gonna go make my own rainbow!

Image Ah, rainbow! Urn, what?

Image Like at the end of a storm. And our people have had a heck of a storm for the last few, you know, centuries. It's about time we all had a rainbow. We have a lot to smile about now. And I'll make sure all that smiling starts with something beautiful!

Image
Image Everyone, I'm Angelic Buster, and I'm here to light up your hearts!

Even the sprite winks here. It's cute. :kimchi:

Image

So ends the last Angelic Buster-unique scene in MapleStory through present day. She gets additional content in the occasional event, which does put her above several other classes, but really Aftermath is kind of the last hurrah of actual characterization before we go on to become the Adversary full-time while dealing with Grandis.

It's weird… the story is over, but the Hyper Burn still carries on. We've got a level to grind out, and no choice but to get to work on it. But first…

Total Kills: 88,542

We did kill the Black Mage, even if he wanted to get murdered the whole time. Still counts. :colbert:

Image

Anyways, it's back to work as usual. We've got dailies to do even after the Black Mage has been killed… and once again the only thing left to fill the gaping silence between moments is the attack animations and battle cries of a Battleground Idol.

Total Kills: 90,744

Image

The rest of the day brings us from 2.4% to 14.9%, meaning we get around 12.5% from our dailies right now.

Somebody call Sadako, 'cuz we're leveling up in Seven Days.

Image

Anyways, the next day, more of the same.

It's a sort of structure.

Image

No matter what else is going on in the world, this stupid game is still here with dailies to give some sense of forward progress—no matter how small, it's something. Enough drops fill a bucket, even if it's a massive bucket and the water is rancid.

There's something comforting in filling buckets.

I heard this theory once, where they say that if you want to break a man you just have them dig a hole and then fill it in over and over and over again… I dunno, it doesn't really feel like that would work right on anyone who has ever made it to endgame in a bad MMO. You'd have to do something extra, like starve them or something. Fundamentally, they already spend most of their time digging the same goddamn hole, then filling it back in to dig the same goddamn hole from scratch.

We just call it Star Force.

Total Kills: 92,947

Image

I don't really have much for this part of things, though. At the very least, there's no way in hell I can top the last level grind? I mean… you can only patch MapleStory to make the music of a pop idol dragon magical girl work once, that's kind of the problem. It works now (if you bother making it happen), you can't… double up on that.

Still not banned, though. I think Nexon agrees with my assessment, not that they can really like. Say so, even if it's true.

That's probably the funniest part of this entire thread, both the steps taken to fix the AB music issue, and also that I appear to have gotten away with it scot-free.

There's literally nothing else here, though. And I think, because there's nothing else here, it kind of makes the LP a failure. Like, in a purely technical sense, we have gotten past the Black Mage. We will, without a doubt, make it to 260, get our 6th job, and end on a Grand Finale.

But I must remind everyone of my original goals that I cited back at the end of the post where I talked about the ABpinch bullshit:
TQ from so, so long ago wrote: So. With all that said, there are ultimately two things that I hope to examine as we go through the next 250 levels on Magilia:

>What was the experience that I had leveling this character up all the way to 260?

>What, exactly, are my feelings towards this game?
Can you tell me what I feel for this game? 'Cuz I sure can't. If anything, I'm more confused than I started.

The usual refrain here is that I play the game as a joke. However, for the purpose of a punchline I've also become relatively knowledgeable about the lore and plot of this game? I also know more about the intricate bullshit of several of these bosses than Actual Endgame MapleStory Players… while also happening to have an Angelic Buster capable of doing any boss short of Hard Baldrix.

Which is to say, an Endgame MapleStory Character.

My account has more in common with the asshole who told me my parents never loved me and I should kill myself than with anyone who will actually ever read this thread.

I have shitposted myself into this position.

But is that all there is to it? Is there some kind of redeeming something to this game? Something I actually enjoy? I mean… I was going to bring it up later, but we should talk about some of the changes Inkwell has put forward in the time since GO WEST.

Image

There are really only a handful of GMS-unique changes… I could actually go through all of them really quickly.

…So we'll do that. :v:

Thing one: They implemented a Boss Fight Mode called Ride or Die. It was basically normal boss fights with a lot of absolutely bullshit modifiers on top of them, that functionally don't matter because with a strong enough character you can still just kind of delete the boss instantly on spawn. They implemented special bonus Nodestones that give random powerups for a limited time, and halfway through the first one they also gave us temporary Best In Slot Totem items (not covered here, they are basically just three extra item slots that give minor stat bonuses). They were pretty cool, until they expired. Anyways, the second time they did it again but with a Best In Slot Badge that you were expected to cube yourself despite it also having a time limit—this went over less well.

The third time, they gave us a temporary Oz Ring that we powered up with fragments from the event so that the normal players could have a level 5 or maybe even 6 ring if they were lucky—I had a 5 that lasted until it too expired. This went over fine, but it'd be really nice to someday get a permanent reward from Ride or Die.

They also have various cutscenes but like, Althea Saga is just Inkwell's totally cool story about multiple universes and the people who keep them all running by removing stuff that shouldn't be there… specifically the bad guy of Ride or Die who keeps summoning evil monsters to help…

Hold on, that can't be right… The Black Mage?

The same Black Mage who was playing to lose?

Did he not get the memo? Guy's dead! He can quit!

Ugh, whatever, moving on.

Image

Characters who are just starting out are now getting a massive boost, both with the KMS-born Item Burning (which gives certain new Hyper Burns a set of gear strong enough that they let my Ren quickly clear her way clear through Chaos Gloom without issue) and a new thing specifically for GMS: Equipment Rental. Rental gear covers a number of slots that the Item Burning doesn't, and the gear was remarkably powerful—while also being available on every character on the account. RenRenBunBun used them when fighting Darknell in order to make up the rest of the damage she needed—and most importantly, they included the all-important Ring of Restraint that most endgame builds need in order to maximize their damage. This was so widely successful that it's already been announced to come back this summer, making everyone's lives a little easier as they're trying to get a decent character put together.

They also added a couple of Star Force pity systems to restore traces to normal. The first is star core boxes, which drop randomly from enemies and max at 10/day. They open into various stars in two types (RNG chance for which) that are combined into making cores that restore traces and let us make them blow up again. Neat. They also added in Trace Restoration Missions—do bosses with extra conditions, get points that can be spent on restoring items. Neat.

Both of them are so slow that you'll see maybe one restoration every 2 or 3 months. They also included Pitched and Dawn set whispers, basically Pity coupons for Pitched/Dawn drops. Dawn set pitched will give you around one every month and a half if you do all the bosses, and Pitched will give one item every ~17 weeks as well. Which is to say, 4 months and change.

They're better than nothing! They're also slow as hell.

Image

Oh… I did another 30 minute farm on one of the days. Neat. Anyways, GMS exclusive content.

The last big one is a familiar system expansion—those little guys now can go on trips that involve die rolls and can give cool prizes, most notably more of those little star pity boxes, or even the completed cores or a chest that gives a random pitched boss set.

You will almost never see the last two things I mentioned. I've seen each of them once in about a year and change of maxing runs on this system.

It's still hellish, but there is the possibility of growth if nothing else.

Image

So is this game actually… good?

As I write this, Shining Star Force time was this morning. I blew up two hearts going from 18>20, before the third hit. I then blew up a shoulder going 18>19 in two taps, and a pitched item going 18>19 in three taps. I will probably not be seeing any more drops of this pitched item for the next year.

Nope. Still a shitty game that hates you, personally, for playing it.

A hole, being dug and filled forever.

Now, there is the POSSIBILITY that at some point in the future the game might conceivably suck less. Inkwell is very much aware, judging from his own intermittent ramblings, that the Star Force system is widely considered the biggest problem with progression in Maple, particularly on the Heroic server—and even that the stuff GMS gets to help offset it is not enough. He's concretely promised upping the boxes we get for that star core system thingy from 10/day (taking between 30m and an hour to farm to max if you want to) to 12/day (see above, but like, slightly more).

I need to pause here to point out that the star core boxes, designed to help players who are the most RNG-screwed, themselves require more layers of RNG to get the pieces necessary to actually allow the player to restore their traced gear.

There's something profoundly funny about that.

He has also concretely promised that we can stockpile a higher number of those Trace Restoration Mission points, which really leads to the question of why they have a max in the first place—they come in at a drip feed of about 150/week if you're doing everything, and the most important items are all 1600+ points to restore.

The biggest statement he's made, though, is from the most recent Inkwell note.

I note that this is not really a solution. It is the promise to maybe do something that might help. "We are planning to institute one of two systems. One of them, actually lets you get to 22* by paying more mesos outright. The other lets you mess with success and destruction possibilities."

To translate: Either we actually put in something that allows you to Star Force up to the beginning of endgame (at a premium cost in mesos)—solving the fucking problem—or else we're going to do some nebulous thing that will do ~something~ to the destruction rates.

Now, I'm the guy who forged the phrase "MapleStory is a shitty game that hates you, personally, for playing it." I am, perhaps, slightly biased.

I am absolutely expecting this promise to be them deciding to slide right on in with the second thing, using a system that doesn't actually fix the problem, instead letting you ultimately pay more mesos to lower the destruction rate by half, double the success rate… and still watch your stuff explode, because MapleStory.

Oh… another 30m farming session.

Image I do love hunting!

Enjoy it while you can, Magilia.

Anyways. That's the end of what we've gotten so far. That is the game as it stands, that is everything that—

Okay. It's not everything. We're talking about ABxLucid. It's time.

Image

AB x Lucid is, as previously stated, not implemented in v251. This is because it was implemented in v252, and on the face of it was a very good event.

Image

I mean, it gave out a chair that was a front row seat to an Angelic Buster and Lucid concert! How could it possibly be bad?

Well, you see, that was because it was a MapleSEA event originally—one that revolved around the new songs that were being debuted. In MapleSEA, there was a 'kill enemies to make an explosion happen' event (same as usual, really), with the big gimmick being that when you did enough Mob Murder you'd get your background changed to one of the three new Angelic Buster songs!

You know, the ones we don't have!

Total Songs: 0.23 of 8, somehow?!

Now, it wasn't all terrible—they did change the system to actually implement Shining Heart at this point, using the lyricless version which I've affectionately dubbed (coward mix) for both the short and long versions of the song. That meant that for the duration of the event, instead of three songs playing at random (Those being the full versions version of Fly Away, Shining Heart, or Star Bubble) we would get one of two.

One of them being the 30 second Angel's Room—not an Angelic Buster song—and the other being Shining Heart's full lyricless version… technically an Angelic Buster song, in the same way that an instrumental version of I Want It That Way is technically a Backstreet Boys song.

I'll give them half points for those ones, I guess.

Total Songs: 1.73 of 8

But would you believe it gets sillier?

Image

The event had a couple of cinematic cutscenes, which were actual performances. Technically. As close to performances as you can get within MapleStory… uhh…

Look, here's a video of the final one from MapleSEA.

The first one was of Lucid singing the full Star Bubble… which we didn't have, so it was just Lucid, and absolute silence like during that one Angelic Buster cutscene.

The second was AB doing Shining Heart. We got (coward mix), which is the closest we ever came to having the same experience as the intended AB x Lucid.

The third… as you can see, was the Fly High remix and a duet between the two of them.

We got Angel's Room. Except the song was too short for the cutscene.

So it looped. Multiple times.

The chair was nice, sure, but they kind of threw the entire point of the idol collab concert into the trash and I feel like I would be remiss to forgive that.

Image

So, is that it? I hate this game? Wholly and all-consumingly? It certainly feels more accurate to say that than it does that I enjoy it… But we'll put a pin in that. There's one more grind after this, after all, and there's one other glaring and obvious thing that we should probably cover first.

Image Wait, more hunting after 260?

Yeah, we're covering 6thjob near its release, which is… Grindy.

Image Woohoo!!

Image

So MapleStory… It's supposed to be an MMORPG, right? Given that, why is it that I've basically pulled myself up all the way from 0 to 260… all without any interference from other players. I've not been in a party for anything, this entire time.

Maplestory is an incredible MMO for people who hate people. Solo progression is possible all the way through Black Mage—further, really, especially with the item and rental changes made lately. It's a lonely game, and you only really need a guild for the guild buffs. Everything else, you do yourself until you get well into Grandis.

Image

Total Kills: 131,095

MapleStory is an intensely lonely game. I still do dailies on my main, and generally wind up on the busiest map available where four people are all sitting there killing mobs. They've done away with map wars, each of us has our own instanced set of mobs that we get to kill. We are four people sitting on a map where party play is not just suboptimal, it's impossible—coded out at the same time they made the mobs instanced. This is the vast majority of your Maple experience, especially if you actually hunt.

Every grinding session is 30 minutes to 2 hours of standing there, doing the same thing, alone, as three other people are on the same screen as you, trapped in the same cycle.

You never talk. That ruins the efficiency. It's being near someone else, but never touching them. Never coming into contact with other people, even as you watch them in the same rote purgatory that you are.

Sometimes I talk to them. Sometimes they say something back.

Usually, I'm just screaming into the void.

It's the perfect MMO for a person like me who would rather be a weird cryptid who delivers neat content than a person.

Image

My idea of friendship is "I throw shit at you that I think you'll like then wander off back to whatever I was doing." This puts me somewhere between 'terminally awkward' and 'literal stray cat' on the hierarchy of friendship types.

Maple is kind of the ideal MMO for people like that. I don't have to talk to anyone unless I want to do endgame bosses—and they have pub groups for that. There's no matchmaking so you wind up putting up a party request and waiting for people to join, but you can just make it as a solo player for 99% of your playtime—and this is only mostly because 99.99% of your playtime is spent doing the same rotations forever to level up and farm mesos.

Image

Total Kills: 133,900

Even then… there are still some traditions that people hold to, created by other Maplers far more personable than myself.

There's a thing called the 250 party. This stopped being a thing when 250 became free, so it moved to 260. Now, even that is gone—the only parties you see these days are for levels like 290, 295, or 300.

Because this was kind of a moment, though, I threw one. A 260 party just for Magilia, in the room that Only Angelic Busters can enter.

With Angel's Room blaring, I waited to see who would show up.

Image

Two people had time at the weird-ass hour that I was actually holding it to drop everything and show up. They are… decidedly dedicated players.

That one on the left is Aux. They do a lot of the optimization calcs for the Angelic Buster discord, and we occasionally have numbers-based slapfights in which we call each other old.

The one on the right is Rudy. They're an ABcord regular as well, and they're most known for being better at playing AB than pretty much everyone else.

A third person, Trueno, would have come—but power outages are a bitch.

Image

Some of the usual shitposting occurred, and I went ahead to turn in the last quest I'd need to push me over into 260.

Image

The hyper burn ended here, with Magilia at 260. They sent their congrats, I thanked them for showing up, then announced I was going to go beat the piss out of a tree.

Image

As usual, Gollux didn't drop a damn thing.

Next time, 6th job and the end of our trip through MapleStory v251.

It's been a long road to get there, but props to you for getting this far with the LP!

It's probably a bit early to be saying it, since it's not quite over yet, but looking forward to whatever comes next after Maple.

Image

Now that we're done hitting 260 and beating the Black Mage, it's time for us to go after the 6th job advancement. This—

Image Hey, hold on a second! Where are we?

Cernium.

Image What's a Cernium?

Level 260 area. Maple World and Grandis are merging because they're all one world. There's a sword and a winged lady, don't worry about it.

Image I choose to worry a lot!

It's beyond the scope of this Let's Play, just imagine something melancholic and also make the supreme evil Gerand Darmoor into a twinky Librarian you can shove into a locker and you've got the idea.

Image O… kay…?

Also your seal stone from back in Black Heaven gets broken which might be a good thing because it was supposed to sap your will and then kill you now that you've slain an Transcendent.

Image WHAT?!

Anyways, [6th Job] Merged Dimension. We're cliff's notesing this because it's a lot of talking about something that already got set up in Cernium's plot.

Image That we didn't cover.

And aren't covering. Yes. Glad we're on the same page.

Image

Image World's merging, Angelic Buster.

Image Huh?

Image World's merging. Were the same. Aren't now. Getting fixed. Thanks, Black Magebama.

Image Uhhh…?

Image

Image And now there's monsters.

Image I do love hunting!

The new monsters are made of a new kind of Erda called Sol Erda. The whole of 6thjob is about things Sol Erda does that are unpleasant.

Image

It can make monsters.

Total Kills: 133,911

Image

It can make their monsters GROW.

Total Kills: 133,912

Image

It can turn the Goddesses to stone.

Image

And now we hit the first actual thing we have to do: fill up an Arcane Stone to unstone the stone Goddesses. We have to charge the stone by hunting enemies until the EXP gauge on it is full, which takes a while. How long is a while?

The stone requires 50 billion EXP. This is a meaningless number without context, so to level up from 256 to 260 we require 577,306,661,354 EXP, or ~577 billion. Each stone requires about a twelfth of this amount, and cannot be filled up by Quest EXP sources like Monster Park or daily turnin XP—we have to hard grind it.

We will have to fill out seven stones over the course of this job advancement.

This means a total of 350b EXP, largely farmed by hand.

This used to be worse, requiring two additional stones for a total of 450b, but that was nerfed prior to v251 existing. In v252 they further lowered the EXP required by ~85-90% per stone (I forget which), but I didn't do that because…

Image Hey, why didn't you do that?

You love hunting?

Image Very true.

Image

Total Kills: 136,937

The one bonus we have is that the event EXP pops do count as hunting EXP and give us a big chunk towards filling our Arcane Stones. This means it only takes us around 15 minutes to fill a stone when fighting level-appropriate enemies. Cernium enemies are worth a bit more EXP than Arcane River ones, after all.

Image What's that "sacred power" thing up there in the top left?

Remember Arcane Force? That but worse. It never reduces damage to 1, only cutting it in half at most, takes much longer to actually build, and maxes its bonus damage at 25% instead of 50.

Image Okay… Cool!

Image

Save stoned goddesses.

Image

Realize that this is in fact 1.0 of the 6th job quest and we need the full 450b exp.

…wait, what.

Image Maybe the two stones are what got cut off in v252?

How do you know what that is?

Image It's postgame, I'm pretty sure now I'm acting a representation of the part of your psyche that enjoys this game.

Okay, I'm decently sure you're not allowed to just say it out loud like that.

Image Speaking as an idol, you use a key change to emphasize the climax of a song—it's important to keep the audience clued in on important things.

Okay, sure, why not. Time to farm 50 billion EXP… again.

Image

This takes even more time, but it's probably for the best—this is Magilia's last foray at hunting. She should enjoy it.

Total Kills: 139,052

Image Oh right… you never really did do much after this, did you?

Project was over. What was I going to do, make an AB Lib mule? Maple hates having more than one of a class.

Image And yet, here you are with eleven Angelic Busters.

And a Ren, we're counting her too.

Image And the Ice Lightning Mage with my old hairstyle?

Sure, why not. Thirteen ABs if you count loosely.

Image

Image Hi miss exalted Goddess, I'm off to save the third one, okay bye~

Image That's my girl. Clean up everything, alright?

Image

Another goddess, another stone, another grind for 50 billion exp.

This brings us into the final two videos, videos I actually remember moderately well. This isn't because there was anything in particular that stood out about the session, it was just grinding. I remember it entirely because of the date—Wednesday, July 17th, 2024.

Image

This is the date that v252 is implemented in the MapleStory server, and is the actual end of v251.

I want to finish the 6th job advancement before it ends, so I'm racing against time.

Image

Total Kills: 143,757

Given that this is the last time I'll ever be grinding on Magilia it's fine to go all out, just a bit—we're using EXP coupons and everything.

Image One final hunt!

Honestly, I figured you'd have more reservations about this. We haven't really picked you up at all since v251. It's been over a year at this point.

Image I've seen what training is like in the future, and I'm pretty okay with stopping here anyways. I love hunting. That thing you do in the future… that's not hunting.

I don't follow.

Image Look at this map. This is an optimal late-game farming map, right?

Yeah, I spent hours on there getting to 290, but what—

Image EXACTLY! Hours! And you know what those four little extra squares are?

Obviously. Three of them are Sol Janus, a trio of independent orbs that destroy monsters around them on a regular basis. The last is Erda Fountain's turret mode that kills monsters around it when monsters die.

Image The entire map is automated. This isn't hunting, this is just a grind. I want to see the fear in their eyes when I destroy them. I want to chase them down. I want to move across the map myself!

I want to play the game I'm playing. I get it—and Maple is a game that doesn't want to be played. It wants to be like a fidget spinner. That thing your thumbs are doing while you're engaged with something else. I hear a lot of my fellow endgamers talk about popping up a series on netflix or a movie or something while they maple in the background…

Image At that point… It isn't hunting. I want nothing to do with it.

I feel like if you are doing something else to distract you while you are playing the game… the game has lost its reason for existing. It's not escapism if you have to escape from it.

Image Mmhmm, exactly!!

I guess that explains why you're not so broken up about things, then.

Image

Anyways we turn the third stone in and all three Goddesses are back.

They then give us six more stones to fill, one for each of our Arcane Symbols. Oh, also our Arcane Symbols have flown off to stem the tide of the Sol Erda.

We still keep their power, this isn't an actual temporary nerf. It's just plot.

Image

So here we are, 300 billion EXP standing between us and our final job advancement. We can do it all at once (a change that made the job advance less annoying, we used to have to do them one at a time), we just have to sit down.

And.

Grind.

Image

The sheer amount of XP we need to get means we'll be running into a problem, though. Right now, every ~300 kills or so, we're getting a massive bonus to our EXP courtesy of the event pop that occurs. We get 30 of these in a day, and each one is giving us about 1 billion XP. Once we get through 17 more of these, however, we'll have hit our limit for the day—meaning our farming slows down without the bonus 2% fill every couple minutes.

These 17 pops will only account for a total of 34% of one stone, so… okay it's not that big of a deal. There's nothing to break anything up anymore, it's all The Grind.

The Grind, where I don't have to actually engage my brain and thus it's left to wander. I can't really farm for hours at a time in MapleStory, because when I do the mind wanders. I nod off, or hallucinate something that didn't happen 'cuz I'm half paying attention, or try to put words in order for whatever I'm working on. Sometimes I pause in the middle to actually jot a thing down, there's enough wiggle room with Spotlight to be able to take 30 seconds off every now and again.

Image

One down. Five to go until the Grand Finale.

Nothing for the mind to do but wander.

There's a lot of stuff I thought about doing for this game's run-through that wound up on the cutting room floor. Interesting running bits that were supposed to go somewhere but never really did.

Image Oh! Like how I can react to everything you say, but nobody else ever seemed to?

Exactly. I figured "hearing things nobody can" is basically one of Angelic Buster's powers, 'cuz it made sense in context. I had the vague concepts of ideas of where to go with it, but in the end…

Image You had a different idea for how to advance the story?

I decided I didn't respect this game's plot enough to do anything extra with it. Anything I set up winds up terminating without any real payoff.

Image Nothing extra? Excuse me? Then what was the Arcadion?

That was not respecting this game's plot.

Image

Total Kills: 148,383

Oh! Something important—this purple portal is actually the key to getting through these stones before maintenance starts. We go in with 6% complete.

Image

Inside, we do a quick minigame that involves knocking over a totem pole for a massive amount of EXP.

Image

In about 40 seconds or so, we've made 15%. That's remarkable progress. The hunting-based portals also can add to it, but none of the other minigames do because they're considered Quest EXP.

That's where I paused my recording—I needed to eat before I get back to it.

Image

Our 30th event XP boom happens before the second stone is even done filling—we're going it alone from here, using 3x EXP coupons and anything else I can scrape together to get just that little bit of EXP.

Image

Two down. Four to go until the Grand Finale. Until everything ends.

Image Hey, you know, it's not like MapleStory isn't trying to be a better game, right?

This is, arguably, true. MapleStory is trying to make GMS heroic a more livable server for people besides the incredibly lucky. They've also decided to start testing their shit—this week (at time of writing) a Private Test Server went up for the very first time to test out the new GMS-exclusive class they're releasing and a couple of other things. One of them was the Starforce system that I mentioned before.

Image It'll absolutely ensure that you can get your gear to 22 stars, which is good!

Yeah, eventually. It's got three tiers of protection past 18 star. Each tic increases the cost per tap, while also lowering both success and destruction rates to stick around longer in purgatory. Because two of them still have a destruction chance, the only one that really matters is the last tier—which is roughly 6.5 times the bonus to cut success rates from 15% to 8% while removing the destruction possibility.

On average you'll be spending roughly triple what you would spend if you go for pure boomless, though because most of that cost is inexplicably on the 19>20 tap the new meta for items that you have backups for is to go with normal rates 'til 20 (which is a ~56% chance, that's basically a coinflip) and then perfect guard destructions until it goes to 22. This has a net cost increase of ~32% over raw tapping in exchange for cutting the average boom rate to a third of what it normally would be.

Image See? They're trying?

Sure, but I feel like you either get to charge me 6.5x the cost per tap or cut the success rates. Both at once is just rude. It is, I will admit, better than nothing.

Image So they ironed out the worst part of the progression system. It should be fine to enjoy the game now, right?

Well I never said that. I'm a single-issue voter, remember?

Image But… you fixed the music.

I shouldn't have had to. :colbert:

Three of six, about 23 minutes after the last pop.

The grind has set in. I'm leaving myself with notes in the footage that tell me how long it is until maintenance starts. There's about three hours right now.

Disaster strikes. My map is stolen while I'm in a portal to get a big boost of stone EXP. I have to change channels. This, in turn, lets me see something beautiful:

My new map is being shared with a Hayato who has used all of the Angelic Buster Remaster event items to look like an AB. This is, in fact, the best use of these cosmetics that I have ever seen.

I also had a sudden reset on kills due to a mispress so I'll bank that here.

An hour into this final video, and four of six are done. Two more, before the Grand Finale.

Time has lost all meaning. There is only the grind. And a big slime I have to beat up. Disconnected thoughts bubble through my mind, rippling along the surface of an endless ocean of consciousness that even its owner can only see so far into.

Image This section is about playing Maple as a joke?

This section is about playing Maple as a joke.

Image

There are many facets of the joke of MapleStory. The first one, and my favorite, is a basic call and response bit. While discussing the game, frequently the person I'm talking to will go "Why do you play this game?" That is the call.

The response: "I can push a button, and a magical girl power-up theme plays. This even works in boss fights."

There is also me knowing way more about the lore and various minor mechanics than any normal player should be aware of—just going off on a deep dive into a random topic and ending the mini-lecture with "I play this game as a joke" is a decent joke. Expected, but not unfunny for being so obvious.

Then there's the newest bit, of course, from Update 68—objectively speaking, "I fixed AB music because the sound isn't part of the game" is the sort of Going To The Nth Degree humor that I wish I had an excuse to take to more often…

But is that all I have? Is the only reason I play for these three jokes?

Image Of course not! Don't be silly.

Then why am I playing this game?

Image Toxic yuri.

what

Image MapleStory isn't good for you, you are… probably not good for MapleStory, but you're stuck paying attention to each other. Maple throws out content and tries to improve juuust enough that you don't leave because they want your money. You think their ineptitude is hilarious and want to watch them trip and fall. Then you add in the feelings about wasted potential and the yearning for a better game that never really existed but got romanticized somewhere as a mythical ideal…

Image You know, toxic yuri.

what

Image

Image Anyways, a half hour later the fifth stone is done. One more to go, before the Grand Finale.

No, no you do not get to just drop something like that and move on like it didn't happen.

Image Sorry. Idol privilege.

Did you just IFRAME a conversation?!

Image Bubble bubble~♥

ugh.

Image

We've been getting messages periodically about the upcoming maintenance in our chat window throughout this process, so I finally decide to capture one. It just tells us that we have a couple of hours left before the v252 maintenance starts; nothing major.

So this is it, the last grind before the end, and the cusp of the Grand Finale of my… third? Let's Play?

Fourth? Third and a half? I'm not sure how You Have To Burn The Rope would count with all of this. Let's just call it third, it's probably the third.

Now that I'm nearly done with my third LP, I think it's officially time to look back over it as a whole.

Image We were already doing that, though?

Yes, and now we're doing it but more.

The end of a Let's Play is always interesting to me, because it's supposed to act as a sort of… final summation of everything that happened where the LPer gives a sort of final wrapup of their feelings for the game, usually over a credit roll. Maple has no credits, so there's just talking about everything while grinding out an Arcane Stone for the purposes of the 6th job advancement.

Image

Each time I have sat here, facing this ending, I've had a different set of feelings built up. I remember, long ago, when I was done with Lobotomy Corporation… When the last update got posted, I felt largely energized. I knew exactly where I was going next, with Library of Ruina being out, and I was still very much in the honeymoon phase with Ruina's mechanics. I figured I could play the game again and I wouldn't mind at all! I was hype! I was ready to go! Lobotomy Corporation was the first big project I'd ever put my mind to and actually finished, and it ruled.

Ruina's ending felt more like catharsis. I had… somewhat underestimated how long it would take to get through the game, and it turns out I'd taken everyone on a trip that lasted over four years. Oops. :sweatdrop:

By the end of it, I had cooled on a lot of things. I still haven't touched Ruina again since finishing the game, and I don't know I ever will. It's a fine game, but there's a lot of cruft to it that just kind of makes the endgame remarkably annoying to play? Friends I'd had had worked their way out of the fandom, and my link to it had left in a much more permanent capacity. It felt a little… bittersweet, I guess? Still, I was satisfied—I'd done everything I wanted to and then some over the course of that thread. The Projmoon LPs in total are still probably my magnum opus, and I doubt sincerely that anything I make will ever eclipse them. It was a nice fifteen minutes, and I did my best to make it memorable for everyone involved.

That brings us to now. More than anything, I feel terrified that it's ending. I feel a lot of other things, too, but it's the fear that I want to examine.

Image

I don't have a fourth LP in me. If I were to quip about it, I would say this is because Project Moon hasn't released any more games, but like… Chrono Ark exists. It's a niche indie Korean dev'd game with a messed up plot—that's my entire brand. Seriously, go check it out, they even had a pinch scandal like every other goddamn thing I've shown off on this website. :v:

I would also say that I made this LP so that there wouldn't be any controversy over which of the TQ Let's Play collection was the worst one. It's Maple. It's definitely Maple. There's no question, there's no argument, this is just the worst one.

But this doesn't seem like the time for a one-liner, so instead I have to be introspective, which—for the record? Sucks. Never stare at your navel, for it is dark and full of lint.

Basically, at its core, I think what I enjoy most about these threads is banging at the constraints of an existing framework, coming up with plotlines that work within them, and expanding on what is there to make something new and interesting that feels fundamentally correct within the world. I think that is part of why MapleStory has felt so lackluster to me; I can't do that here. Not without rewriting large portions of what happens.

Magilia is not a character in MapleStory. Magilia is a gun. We are a passive observer who occasionally gets to make a QTE to try and do something, who has set dressing boss fights when the plot finally allows us to but otherwise are completely barred from doing anything within the plot. For as much as everything relies on Magilia, the entire plot of MapleStory took place while she was in a hat, or fucked off into another dimension where nobody could speak to her. We are someone the plot happens to. Outside of a couple of lines and the whole of a single [Aftermath] cutscene, we're not given anything to work with past level 70 when our character plot ends.

The plot points Magilia in a direction. She fires. We repeat.

But I've gotten off track.

Total Kills: 170,329

The Battle Analysis ends automatically after an hour, so I have to restart it here. Banking the kills.

Anyway.

When I first started with Lobotomy Corporation it was for a couple of reasons, but the biggest one was ultimately this… burning inside my gut that needed to write about the game and show it to people. I still felt that through the whole of Ruina, and Maple… was mostly an intensely personal project that I wrote about 'cuz I felt I needed to or I'd go insane. Right now, though, that fire is pointed somewhere else entirely. I want to make a complicated mess in my own world, I want to stop building sandcastles in someone else's sandbox when I have an entire beach of my own.

And that is the source of the fear. The knowledge that after this, what comes next is something Different and Unknowable. There's excitement and there's the joy du verve, but there is also fear, and that isn't something that should be ignored.

Face the Fear, Build the Future, right? As far as that goes, I'll make sure to announce on my bluesky when it launches, and also probably mention it on kofi or my youtube. I'll probably need a month or so to finish pulling everything together and get things rolling, just to get the workflow in order and set up the last couple things I've been putting off. I'll also mention it in the thread, of course.

But first, I have to bring MapleStory to a close.

Image

It's time.

Total Kills: 170,403

Image

...goddammit, maplestory :eng99:

Okay. A Hyper Teleport Rock later, and now it's time.

Image

There's six tiny sidequests surrounding the center mass of Sol Erda, each one corresponding to one of our Arcane Symbols. We need to clear each one out to return everything to balance.

Image

For Vanishing Journey, we re-enact the end of the weekly symbol quest by shooting a laser at giant Sol Erda enemies.

Total Kills: 170,491

Image

For Chu Chu Island, we're doing QTEs to free Hungry Muto from some Sol Erda that's holding the poor kid down.

Image

Lachelein's has us punching dark piles of Sol Erda to turn it bright blue, while monsters try to turn bright blue ones dark blue—a reference to a piece of Lach content that was retired before 6th job ever happened.

Total Kills: 170,518

Image

For Arcana, we're helping unbind Rock Spirits so that we can get up to where our old Spirit Buddy is. However, the QTE where this happens is built for normal character Speed and Jump—and Angelic Buster, as you'll recall, gets more Speed than most characters do.

Image

She falls off of the pile during the jump up, and the cutscene plays like nothing wrong happened at all. :v:

Image

Morass, as is befitting the worst area, is just us rotating bits of background until they line up.

Image Morass…

Image

Lastly there's Limina, which just has us beating up random Sol Erda mobs.

Total Kills: 170,572

Image

This puts the Sol Erda into balance, because it was just kind of confused due to the world merge, and gives us the ability to control it. The goddesses congratulate us, and we get back to what we were doing.

Image

Nexon has, at least, learned from their 5th job advancement. The animation is not blocked by anything. It's also very sparkly.

Image And now, it's time for the Grand Finale! Right?

Right. Let's do it!

Image

One more time, I head to Hellux.

Image
Image Everyone's idol, Angelic Buster, ready!

Grand Finale is the Angelic Buster Origin skill, the super-powerful once-every-6-minutes skill that has been shown a few times before now. It starts by having Angelic Buster pose.

Image

She then poofs her weapon into a microphone…

Image

Blows the crowd a kiss…

Image

And triggers a flash mob to explode on the enemy. The attack isn't done yet, though.

Image
Image All together, let's go!

It zooms out, and launches a bunch of fireworks that deal even more damage. This is the most damaging part of the skill—please note that it hasn't started yet and Phase 1 Hellux is already down 80% of its HP.

Image

It then will turn our Soul Seekers into more powerful Cheer Balloons for the duration of the 40 second buff, while spawning a bunch of them right off to bonk the opponent. Hellux melts under the onslaught.

It also does one last thing: changing the background to Star Bubble for those 40 seconds.

Total Songs: 2.73 of 9. It's the KR version, and it works perfectly. For the first time, I do not have an asterisk.

Image

Nothing drops, of course.

Final Kills: 170,573

Image

With the Grand Finale done, all that's left is to hang out in the Room Only Angelic Busters Can Access and listen to Angel's Room while waiting for the server to go down for maintenance.

This is, truly, the end of MapleStory v251. MapleStory itself, however, continues on. With my music fixed, so too do I—until they ban me for AB music crimes, the funniest sentence ever conceived of in relation to MapleStory.

Image

Not that even this would stop me from Bustin, of course.

It remains a shitty game that hates you, personally, for playing it. It is a treadmill designed to never end, designed to barely change. Cygnus was put into a coma in the level 280 area. She is still in a coma in the 285 area, and 290, and even the new 295 area. I do not think she will wake up before Darmoor is defeated. Of his thirteen apostles, we've only managed to beat two over the last nine areas of Grandis. We walk onward without end, in hopes that something cool will happen.

Maybe it will, sometime before level 400.

There is no such thing as a Mapler who has ever had their story end in a way that felt fitting or epic. There are always plot threads hanging open, there is no dramatic ending without an immediate "but wait, there's more" to undercut it, the goal is always to make sure that we know there is no end, that we will never get to see more unless we grind out those next five levels over the course of a year—and the more is merely more of the same. The only Grand Finale is the one on Angelic Buster's skill list.

MapleStory is not a game which has endings, it is a game which simply stops once its player is sick of its bullshit.

This is the MapleStory Let's Play.

It's been a long road to get there, but props to you for getting this far with the LP!

It's probably a bit early to be saying it, since it's not quite over yet, but looking forward to whatever comes next after Maple.

Image Remember, this is what the Black Mage said in the Empress's dreams.

Image Your fate is sealed.
This bit in particular feels really funny to me because it reads like Neinhart managed to do a really good Black Mage impression.
I read this right when I posted so it counts. Thanks very much for sticking with me this long!

The next project... I'd talk it up, but it's ultimately a serialized webnovel so it'll probably just be a Pretty Ok One Of That. I'll be sure to link here when it starts as well, 'cuz of course I will.
