What is this game?
Etrian Odyssey 4 is the fourth game in the dungeon-crawl-and-map-draw-them-up RPG series of Etrian Odyssey, also being the first game of the series to appear on 3DS. It was developed by Atlus and was released in Japan on July 5 in 2012, in North America on February 26 in 2013, and in Europe on August 30 in 2013. In typical EO fashion, you create your own party. Type a name, pick a class, pick a portrait, and do that at least four times more. Then explore the Yggdras- wait. No. Not in this one. In EO4, you traverse an overworld instead to get to the individual big and small labyrinths. While there is a story, it's not very thick. This does allow you to make up your own backgrounds for characters, which is nice.

Anything else?
I'll be playing with the transparency patch by GlitchMC. It'll give all skills a MUCH more descriptive description that describes their effects with *GASP!* numbers!
I'm sadly not going to write a ton of dialogue for the explorers. I tried that before, but got tired of it way too quickly. I might insert a few lines if it fits the situation. I won't stop you from writing dialogue yourself if you want to write some though.

Bold text will denote the game's narration.
Italicized text will be my personal comments.

The Guild

Frank's character, Atalanta the Landsknecht

Image

A young woman who grew up near Tharsis. Learned to hunt with her mother, and run with her father, she met the current Guildmaster of Tharsis a few years ago and discovered her true calling in life. Adventure! A leader amoung her family she's more than used to being in charge of hunting parties, and hopes to inspire other adventures with her abilities with a Sword and Rapier! Although, she's very headstrong and has already run into danger without really thinking about consequences. She truly wishes to find like minded people, and is more than likely to talk to everyone to inform them of the benefits that Tharsis could get from reaching Yggdrasil. At 19 though she has much to learn, but she's excited nonetheless

sasaki's thighs's character, Hel the Nightseeker

Image

Hailing from a land far away, Hel got dragged by to Tharsis by his airship-fanatic buddy. He took on adventuring after being pushed. Hel is... a coward, in the worst sense. It doesn't matter with whom, person, monster, or even tiny little animals, he gets spooked easily, wanting to run away at the slightest bit of danger. He's also has a deep phobia of gore and blood, the sight of it always makes him puke. Hel is a pushover, it doesn't take an especially convincing person to make him agree with something. That said, he is not naive. Hel is observant and swift, he takes down his enemies with terrifying speed. He keeps track of people, and observes them quietly, but it's hard for him to share information with others, people are too scary!

Cross's character, Frank the Fortress

Image

Frank might look evil, with his harsh face and harsh grin, but he's a bit of a coward, and loves hiding behind his shield, especially against enemies that are absolutely massive. Because of this, he's a pretty good Fortress, making sure that everyone else is behind his shield as well, he hates people being hurt, because then he has to take care of them, and that puts him in danger! Unfortunately, while his mother told him to smile to ease people's worries, he never got the hang of it, so looks like he's about to gleefully murder them despite the kind words coming from his mouth.

Erisin's character, Nie the Sniper

Image

Raised sheltered until she was set loose upon the world at the age of 18, Nie's mannerisms and ideas are a bit on the old-fashioned side. Balancing her somewhat haughty and snobbish attitude is genuine wonder at a lot of things the adventurers of Tharsis take for granted, like airships, or bars, or anything outside of high society expectations. Her disciplined upbringing made her surprisingly good at archery, the highlight of her many lessons on how to be a proper lady. But it's time she sees more of the world, and what better way than to plunge straight into the wild life of a labyrinth adventurer?

Arctoyolt's character, Bundt the Medic

Image

Bundt's a bit of a lazy guy who claims he's "gotten the deets of the healing" despite his somewhat questionable way of going about medical practices. Still, he at least works on the battlefield rather than sitting back. Survival's more important than being able to kick back and do nothing, since what good's a dead guy to his friends?

Jarno the Runemaster

Image

An astrologer from another land who came to Tharsis to learn of more magical techniques beyond astrology, to find cool new outfits, and to find more fantastical flora and fauna. He has an aversion for eye contact and can come over as emotionless when he's calm, which may make him seem unapproachable. Can be very friendly and emotive when he is comfortable with others. Is minorly famous for cheating death, despite him sometimes lacking armour or any skills to avoid damage and death.

Wakujuz's character, Quelle the Dancer

Image

To Quelle every swing of her swords is both art and history. Basic sword forms have their own sinister beauty and tell a basic story: a person attacked from the side draws, slides the blade aside, ripostes, and so on. The Blade That Remembers is a school that takes that a step further, encapsulating entire battles and wars into a long, flowing dance. It is beautiful and deadly...just like the Labyrinth. Young and impetuous Quelle wants to MAKE history instead of merely learn about it. Excelling at her training the young blade dancer struck out on her own for Tharsis to meet her aunt Kirtida and join a guild set for the great unknown.
Quelle is a bit of a selfish hothead: it takes a lot of assurance to assume you'll be the one people will be telling stories about for generations to come. Still she is chipper and easygoing, ensuring she'll be able to make friends wherever she goes. The labyrinth with challenge her notions of perfection, both martial and superficial, and it's only a matter of time until she'll be forced to evaluate what it means to be part of a team.

Name: Katarin

Class: Fortress

Portrait: The one with the twintails

Bio: Katarin does not do things by halves, or even 100 percent, but 150 percent. A scion of nobility who somehow ended up here, she charges headfirst into all challenges, laughing madly and declaring how absolutely wonderful it is. She aspires to tame a FOE through sheer force of will.

Guild Name: Virtuous Dancing Bastards

Can't submit a character right now, but I'll toss out Guild Highroad

User avatar
I forgot to mention I also got character submissions through Discord, so sorry if your character didn't get in. I might have gotten a submission through Discord first before a post here. Sorry if I disappointed anyone. As of writing this, Sniper is still available.

User avatar
Welp. Looks like the character slots are all taken! Sorry if you didn't get to submit anything! The guild name is still open though. Max 8 characters for a name.

User avatar
ready for Nie to learn that kangaroos are not just a fairy tale made to scare children into behaving

User avatar
I am complete and utter pants at the EO series and its relatives, but I'll always enjoy watching them.

As for Guild name, to commemorate the new forum, perhaps Sandy.

User avatar
Current votes for a guild name!
Highroad: 2
Sandy: 1
Odd Bird: 1
Sirocco: 1

Anyone else?

User avatar
Sirocco is pretty much one of the best possible names here. Definitely get my vote.

User avatar
mentioned in on discord but I like Sirocco as well

User avatar
Sirocco: 4
Highroad: 2
Sandy: 1
Odd Bird: 1

Now that's a swing.

User avatar
Considering the guild will be sailing* north for most of the journey, Sirocco is a blessed name. An hot and humid wind, coming from the south-east.

*is it still sailing for airships?

User avatar
I like Odd Bird myself.

Considering EO4's ship has no sails, I'd say no.

There are several points in the game where they refer to the balloon on an airship as the 'sail,' actually

Update 1: Old Forest Tutorial

Image

Hollow ones cling to faith;
Fanged ones honor power;

Foolish sages protect a lie.

But the Medium's song remains,
Guiding you to Yggdrasil.

You hold the wings to soar
In this tempestuous saga.

Winds of beginning, blow now...

Image

Now that's a great opening theme. EO4 is the first EO game with orchestrated music and the title theme gives you a good wake-up slap.

Image

EO4 is also the first to have a difficulty option! Casual gives you 50% extra damage dealt and halves damage taken, losing a battle carts you back to town instead of making a sapling visit your screen, and Ariadne Threads are infinite. I'll be playing on Normal though.

Image

Legends say something sleeps within Yggdrasil that calls people to eternal paradise. In order to ascertain the truth of this legend, the Count of Tharsis issued a challenge across the land. "Reach Yggdrasil and uncover the truth!" That summons has drawn countless explorers to the city. You are among their number; a pilgrim to the city with little to your name but a blade and boundless curiosity. Nevertheless, you aim to solve the mystery of Yggdrasil and win fame and fortune!

Image

The game won't allow me to go anywhere but the guild, so...

Image

Image

Image This is the Explorers Guild, where your kind pools their talents. It's something like a mutual aid society. Now, if you want to operate in this city as an explorer, you have to be part of a guild.

Image I want to make my own guild and make a name for myself!

Image Oh, so you want to create your own rather than joining someone else's? Then write a name in that ledger. Though your guild will be your whole identity in Tharsis, so think it over carefully before deciding on a name.

After skipping the usual "Don't be mean" suggestion for names, we enter the name that won the poll.

Image

Image The Sirocco Guild... Very well. Here's hoping you can live up to the name. You'll want this. It's a letter of introduction that'll get you into an audience with the Count.

Obtained Formal Letter!

Image Next, you need to register the explorers you want in the Sirocco Guild and form an adventuring party. It's up to you who to recruit, but you can't go wrong with a balanced party. You can register yourself, of course.

Time to create the guild members!

Image

Image Alright! Now to find some guildies! Oh! Heeeey! Mr. Robes with the wand and book! Wanna join my guild?

Image Me? Sure, I suppose.

Image

Image Nice to meet you, Jarno! My name's Quelle!

Image What's the name?

Image Quelle!

Image What?

Image It's Quelle!

Image No, I- Nevermind. Thanks for inviting me though.

Image No probs! Here's some forms you can use to help find some more guildies for us! Let's meet up here again! Byyyyeeee!

Image W-wa- Uuugh... I guess I'll try my best... Why is she named "What" though? Probably a coincidence.

After a while, Quelle finds a lone explorer.

Image Heya! Want to join my guild?

Image Hmmm... Mayhaps joining a guild may help my ability to see more of this world? I accept, miss. Do you, perchance, know where your guild leader is? I would like to apply.

Image Right here! Just fill in this form, please!

Image They simply let just about anyone form a guild? Thank you. Here is my form, filled in as per the requirement.

Image

Image Thank you! We'll meet at the entrance of the Guild Hall! See ya!

Meanwhile...

Image

Image F-Fine! Here! Please don't hurt meeeeeee!

Image I- What? Why would I-

Image Where are you taking me?!

Image P-please calm down. You just signed up to be part of an adventuring guild. I'm not going to harm you.

Image There you are, Hel! Could you maybe not run off like that? Why'd you run, anyway!

Image AAAAAAAIIIIEEEE! Don't sneak up on me like that!

Jarno and the Fortress exchange looks. Jarno has a puzzled look, while the Fortress looks back with a sheepish smile that looks... a tad demonic.

Image Guess I'll sign up too... Can't have him run off to get you hurt, huh? Haha. Don't worry. My friend Hel's a gigantic coward. The name's Frank, by the way.

Image

Image I see... Well... We... will meet up at the Guild Hall, okay?

ImageImage Okay!

Hel runs off again, panicking slightly. Frank is hot on his trail.

Later, the guild meets up at the Guild Hall. There's something off though.

Image Waaaaiiit a minute. Who are YOU?

Image Wait. This isn't the Highroad Guild?

Image Nnnno... This is the Sirocco Guild.

Image Oops! Welp. Guess I missed their recruitment drive! Can I join yours then?

Image Sure! Glad to have ya!

Image

Now that I'm done making them, let's set off!

Image

Image

Image

Image Here in my Grand Court, when there are important duties to be carried out, I assign them to explorers as missions. But of all the explorers who arrive in Tharsis, like yourselves, we want only the best on the hunt for Yggdrasil. Before you can set out on your search, you must prove yourself worthy as explorers. What say you to this?

Image I do not know of my allies' abilities, but I certainly will be able to do so.

Image Rude.

Image Ah, very reasonable of you! In that case, simply accept the mission I have offered and prove your skills.

Tutoial tiiiiime. *Bangs and confetti*

Image I'd like for you to head to the Old Forest Mine on the outskirts of the city and excavate some Iridescent Ore. We had thought the vein was mined dry, but the other day, a certain explorer found that there was more to be had. The Iridescent Ore is a pretty thing. Shine light on it, and it refracts it into all the colours of the rainbow... But its true worth is not found in its beauty! Though I'll explain more about that if you complete the mission. Now, do I understand right that you've only recently arrived in Tharsis? You must lack the proper essentials. So I'll pay half of the reward for this mission in advance. Use that to purchase whatever you'll need.

Obtained 500en.

Huh! That's generous.

Image The Old Forest Mine is the perfect place to test your skills. You'll need all your strength and cunning there. Once you're ready, head to the city gates, and I'll have a soldier waiting to escort you there. Best of luck!

But before we do that... Uh... We currently are only equipped with the equivalent of a quick snack run to the freezer in the middle of the night. A visit to the atelier is in order!

Image

Image

Image Da Sirocco crew, huh? Well, hey, welcome ta Berund Atelier. For alla ya weapon and item needs! Eh... mosta ya needs, anyways. It kinda depends on da materials you explorer folks sell us. Da more materials ya bring us, da more kindsa stuff we'll sell yas! We gotta list posted of what kinda equipment we can make, so if ya see something ya want, bring us da stuff. Well, niceta meetcha! Give us a ring whenever ya need something for ya advencha!

No. This is seriously how she talks. Anyway, what the girl says is true. Bring materials from the labyrinths, sell them, and unlock new equipment. There's different types of weapons and armour that only certain classes can equip. Equipment has an effect on your battle speed, but I won't go into detail about it right here. On the bottom screen, you can see what a selected ally has equipped currently, in addition to their stats. Equipment can have an effect on stats, depending on the icons in its description. I'll go into detail about the icons later, when a certain mechanic is unlocked.

I bought a shield for Frank, a bow for Nie, and some helms for all but Frank. Three Medicas should be nice in an emergency. Whenever I start an EO game, I tend to go down a list when buying equipment to keep myself from screwing myself over. Shield, weapons, armour, accessories, items. Shields have priority over every purchase so long as a class like Fortress, the tank, is in the party. Then weapons to allow allies to actually USE their damage skills. Mages and healers don't care about weapons much in games like EO4 though, since they have no effect on your damage beyond extra effects on the weapons.

In addition to all this exhausting prep work, I allocated the skill points of the current party members.

Image

Why didn't I invest in Iron Wall? Well...

Image

Frankly, it sucks this early on.

Image

Image

Image

Saving a point for Lightning Rune later.

Image

Now onwards, TO ADVENTUUUUUU-

Image You're the Sirocco Guild, right? I'm here from the Outland Count.

F- Please, game. Less text, more adventuring?

Image Before we leave, you're sure you're ready for this? Whatever skills you have are useless if not trained.

Obligatory message you have 3 free skill points on a fresh character and that you gain 1 SP per level. Assign SP to skills in the Custom menu you can access with the Y button!

Image So, what'll it be? Should we head straight for the Old Forest Mine?

Image Let us proceed posthaste!

Image Alright, then follow me.

Image

Image

Image

WE ENTER AT LAST. We can also instantly leave if we'd like.

Image Ah man. Adventure. Would've preferred to stay at the guild, really.

Image Wha-?! Where'd you come from?!

Image Assigned by the Count as your personal doctor. Name's Bundt. Cheers.

Image ...but he never said that?

Image Guess he forgot. Here's my card.

Image

Image We're glad to have you regardless! Welcome to the team, Bundt!

Image

This desk's underside seems a lot more appealing than its topside, all of a sudden.

You pick it up and see that it is a shining, golden locket, with space for a small picture inside. Could another explorer have dropped this...? If you are curious, you can try opening the locket.

Image Let's uh... Leave it be before we anger the owner...

Just as you are wondering what to do with the locket, someone speaks to you from behind.

Image Found that for me, did you? Thanks, I've been looking all over for it.

You turn to see a sleepy-looking man with a sack over his shoulder. His attire marks him as a fellow explorer. You hand the locket to the man, who seems to be a friendly sort. He asks the name of your guild.

Image Me, I'm Whirlwind, though that's really just a nickname... Nice meeting you, Sirocco Guild.

Image We're here for some Iridescent Ore. Have you seen a vein of it?

Image You're here for some Iridescent Ore? Yeah, I think there's still some to be had in this Old Forest Mine. How do I know? Because I'm the one who found it in the first place. Here. Maybe this'll help.

Image What is this parchment for? We do not need it for notes.

Image It's to draw a map with, Nie. Explorers draw their own maps to navigate the labyrinths. Some explorers like to say it's an explorer's lifeline.

Image Preposterous! Do we not get a navigator?!

Image Look down. The navigators are standing around that area.

Image What? That doesn't make any sense!

Image I sketched in where you can find the Iridescent Ore. I hope that helps point you in the right direction.

Image But only half of it is drawn!

Image Huh? The map's only half done? Well, that makes this a great chance to learn how to draw your own!

I'll keep it short here. You get a selection of tools such as a pencil, paint, and icons to draw a grid-based map on the bottom screen. Draw it well, or face disorientation.

Image How 'bout it? Think you can draw your own? Don't worry, if I can do it, anyone can!

The man laughs, though you are not sure this is a joking matter.

Image But seriously, you need to learn to draw a map if you're going to chase Yggdrasil. That map's your lifeline.

Image Chasing a tree isn't going to be that hard. Well... Unless it suddenly grows legs. It's not out of the question.

Image Preposterous! A tree cannot grow legs!

Image You never travelled to Etria, huh?

Image When you think you're done with your map of this Old Forest Mine, bring it here and I'll look it over for you. I'll be at the entrance.

The man then parts with you and walks back the way he came... You glance at the map he gave you and decide to begin your search anew.

I quickly ran back to the loop behind me to find a closed shortcut. I ran back and ran into...

Skills
Rush Attack: A single target attack that deals Bash damage. Uses the legs. Melee range. 130% damage. No speed or accuracy modifiers.

Threatening? Not really. Especially when they're alone, which they can! An elemental attack will deal with it effortlessly. A quick round of regular attacks does them in too. I'll show battles if they're not boring like a single roller. Got some Hard Skin as a reward. In addition, the enemy is added to the compendium, in addition to any items they dropped. Now I can perss R to see the damage vulnerabilities of Rollers!

Image

As you proceed down the forest path, you eventually reach a fork in the road. Across the water, you see a shining patch of ground. It seems something buried shallowly is reflecting light.

Image Isn't that the ore we're looking for?

Judging by the map you received from Whirlwind, the Iridescent Ore you seek can be mined there. But the water between you and your prize is too deep to cross. You frown and begin looking for another route.

Image Mage, freeze the water!

Image The ice I create with my magic dissipates too quickly. Tried it before in another land. The ice also... tends to be so cold it hurts to even be near it. Quelle would likely not want to be a sunny ice sculpture. She's not dressed for the cold either.

Image

Did another explorer leave this? The sign begins, "Caution!" in large bold letters. You read further... "From here on lurk monsters of the old mine! Those who mistake recklessness for courage will meet Death!"

You sometimes find random events throughout the labyrinths. Some are good, some bad, some are simple conversations or text. Choose wisely when interacting with them. You may face danger if you choose poorly. In this case, it's hinting at what's to come...

As you steadily put one foot in front of the other, you gradually become aware of a dread presence.

Image To the right! F.O.E.!

Image

Image

You know that there is no shame in avoiding unnecessary combat... A wise explorer picks their battles. If you wish to avoid an encounter, study the monster's movements and slip past it! FOEs will also move for every turn that passes in battle. Be aware of their position during combat!

Even in a forest mine, F.O.E.! The game isn't really kidding either. FOEs are practically minibosses that wander the labyrinth in full view. They're visible on your map. The flames surrounding the icon on the map shows how difficult the enemy is compared to you, level wise. It checks with the highest level in your party. Red is a large difference, yellow us just about right, and blue means they're easy. They can join battles too, so don't take too long in a battle if you're in their path! How do you get past them? Well... You solve their puzzle! Look at the FOE's path and how it reacts to you and the environment. That is how you pass by without getting annihilated. Or you brute force your way through if you can handle it. Almost forgot... The orb that changes colour in the bottom right as well as those coloured bars? The orb represents how close you are to entering a battle. The bars represent how close an FOE is. All bars full? The FOE is right next to you!

Image

Image

This is a plant called a Traveller's Friend, prized by explorers for the way it stores water in its stalks. If you're thirsty, you can nibble at the stalk, though if you are wary of monsters, you may wish to leave.

Image I'm a bit hurt, but... we're pretty much raring to go, aren't we? Let's just pass it by...

If this plant is attractive to humans, it would be equally so for monsters... Thinking this, you turn away. Unfortunately, you turn directly into a horde of terrible insects! However, your caution has enabled you to catch the monsters unawares! You take up arms and prepare for battle!

Well... I did say your choices can matter during these events!

Jump Kick: A single target STR-based attack that deals bash damage. Uses the legs. Melee. 150% damage. +3 speed. 90% accuracy.

Image

Certainly more dangerous than a roller! Though... Will we even let them attack at ALL?

Frank uses Taunt while Quelle uses Counter Samba. Bundt heals Frank. Jarno casts Fireball Rune at the back row. Nie uses Leg Snipe on the front row.

Image

Image

Image Right for the knee!

Remember how the Jump Kick description says it uses the legs? Nie's Leg Snipe inflicts leg binds. Leg binds halve AGI, disable escapes and evasion, and keep leg skills such as Jump Kick from activating! If an enemy tries to use the skill, they waste their turn.

Image

Image

And since we got a pre-emptive strike on the enemy, they don't get to act! Be careful though, as you also have a chance to be ambushed and be forced to wait a turn yourself whenever you enter a battle.

Frank defends. Bundt and Quelle attack the Grasseater in front, and Nie attacks the back row.

Image

Image Whoo! Tag team!

Image

And a crit from Nie! That was trivial.

After successfully vanquishing the terrible insects, you decide to leave at once before more can arrive.

The Guild moves further to their destination when they pass through a door.

When you open the door, you see an open clearing past it.

Image

Image

But have care! The wandering beasts will hunt you mercilessly even while you mine for minerals!

Don't be so dramatic, game. While pressing A at a gathering point will count as moving or advancing a turn, these FOEs don't chase the player. Do you want more materials from these points? Press A multiple times! EO4 changed gathering to be much more bearable. You get about three shots at gathering from these points. Chop, Mine, and Take simply give you a chance to get more resources. No more gathering parties!

After dodging the first baboon by just letting it walk past, you can get slate here, but that's not what we're here for...

Image

Image Oh no oh no oh no oh no...

Let's allow the FOE to pass first...

Image

Image OOOOOH! It's so shiny!

At last, you have mined the Iridescent Ore you came for! Your mission is now complete. The ore won after many tense moments near powerful monsters is lighter than you'd imagined and feels fragile... After you finish exulting in your accomplishment, you stow the shining stone and begin your trek back.

Now I'm not going to go back the way I came, no. There is a path beyond the baboons.

Image

Image Cooool. Treasure. What's in it?

Image

Well then. With that, let's enter the shortcut behind us.

Image

Image

Of course...

Yet again, Frank taunts. Bundt attacks the front row while Quelle starts cha-cha-chasing. Jarno lights the back row on fire, and Nie recreates a certain scene from Ace Ventura with Leg Snipe.

Image

Image

Image One-two-three! One-two-three!

And finally, Sirocco rushes with a round of regular attacks.

Image Let's return to town... Oh... He's still waiting for us...

You find the explorer Whirlwind, who gave you your map, standing at the edge of an open clearing. If you wish, you can have him review the completed map you've drawn.

Image Whirlie! Look at our map, please!

Image Oh, hey guys. Want me to take a look at that map? Alright, let's see here...

You hand him your map and he pores over it to verify its accuracy... Whirlwind studies your map intently for some time, but eventually his face brightens and he addresses you.

Image This is nicely done, considering the time it took. I'm surprised how well drawn it is! Looks complete to me. This is your map and yours alone. You never know when you might need it again, so take good care of it.

ImageYou get yourself some Iridescent Ore? I thought so, since you seemed so pleased. Anyway, that wraps it up for your mission.

The man congratulates you and you thank him before parting ways.

He has a name, game. :P

You check your knapsack again to make certain that the Iridescent Ore you put away is still there. The final step before completing your mission will be to visit the Grand Court and report your find.

We're going to the inn innstead. I didn't save when we were first in the town.

Image

Image

Image Welcome to the Saehrimnir Inn. Lots of our explorers use this place as a base between excursions. If you get hurt or tired, come back here and get a good rest. We have a clinic in the back, too! You're welcome to use it if you have any ailments or wounds to treat.

SAVED. Thanks for reading this update! Now, if you'd like, you can vote here for the next party composition!

User avatar
ah yeah EO4 gather mechanics

unlike other games you can't get into an encounter unless you have a FOE barrel into you or something so no gathering ambushes in the traditional sense

along with single point gather skills and other mechanics we shall see later gathering Is arguably the strongest here in the entire series, in the sense that high reward for little risk or effort

you can't really build an insane gathering party but interacting with gathering on your main party is basically free for some pretty nice stuff

User avatar
Class Showcase: Landsknecht

Image

The class with the name few seem to be able to spell well, Landsknecht is a damage focused class with a tendency for teamwork. They use swords and rapiers to deal damage to enemies and can equip shields and up to heavy armour. Landsknechts are capable of aiding their allies through passives and actives such as their class skill and Break skills, but can also require the help of others to use their Link skills effectively. Very robust on the HP and VIT side, but are horrendous when it comes to magic. Their low TEC leaves them vulnerable to TEC damage in addition to limiting their capability with TEC based skills. Landsknechts also have rather shallow TP pools, adding another limitation if handled poorly. I wouldn't trust them to inflict ailments either due to them having the worst LUC in the game, which their TEC certainly can't compensate for. This also leaves them weak to ailments and binds, so keep a Medic, Dancer, or Theriaca handy just in case. They're not absurdly slow though and are quite capable of keeping up with enemies in the speed department.

Stats

Image

Class skill

Whenever the Landsknecht attacks an enemy, other allies who attack the same target gain extra damage and accuracy against that enemy. These are displayed as separate skills in game, but only the strongest of this line is in effect. Supports multiple targets, but does not stack with other instances on the same targets. In-game, these are separated into three different skills that are unlocked by reaching the required level. Only the most powerful active iteration is used.

It's more damage for everyone, so why pass on it? You'll enjoy this bonus whether you use Links or not. Just make sure the Landsknecht goes first so everyone benefits from it.

Novice

Sonic Raid

Required skills: None
Body part used: Arms
Equipment: Sword or Rapier

Has priority, with a -3 speed modifier. Equipped weapon determines the damage type. No accuracy modifier.

Image

Do you need to go fast? Then this skill will give you that without any other requirements. It's just not that much beyond that and you probably just want to invest in other skills already. It's probably useful if you really need to finish off a thing NOW, but I personally never found any use for it. Wait. You don't want a Link Landy? Well... Sucks for you. You'll have to wait. This is the best you get until level 20! Does take oils, but not visually.

Blazing/Freezing/Electric Link

Required skills: Lvl 3 Sonic Raid
Body part used: Arms
Equipment: Sword or Rapier

No speed or accuracy modifiers. Deals elemental+Cut/Stab damage to one enemy depending on the skill and weapon used. Whenever another ally deals damage to the enemy, a follow-up attack is generated. The damage of the follow-up is determined by the follow-up multiplier of the skill's level. (Initial DMG*[Follow-up mult]%= Follow-up DMG)

Death does not cancel this skill.

Image

Links are most likely one of the most powerful damage options in the game. Especially in combination with other skills available later in Landsknecht's kit. It triggers on any kind of damage too, which makes building a party around Links very easy. Links also do not stop if the user dies. All you need is the initial hit, and the effect will stay.

Why is the follow-up multiplier in the table? Well... The follow-up multiplier is affected by Link Mastery. Check that skill for more info.

Also, here is a nice little bug with Links involving imbues and elemental forges. They can change the Link's damage type, but it's really weird about it. Fire imbues change Ice and Volt Links to fire damage. Ice imbues change Volt Links to ice damage. Volt imbues don't do anything, in addition to Fire Link not being affected by this. If you really want to, you can save on SP by only investing in Electric Link and use imbues/forges to simulate the others. Is one less buff or forge slot worth that for you? Go right ahead!

Power/Mind Break

Required skills: None for Power Break. Lvl 3 Power Break is required for Mind Break.
Body part used: Arms
Equipment: Shield

Has a -3 speed modifier. Has no accuracy modifier. Uses the equipped weapon's ATK value to determine damage, but isn't usable without a shield equipped. Deal Bash damage to one enemy while decreasing the enemy's physical or elemental damage for 4 turns. Power Break reduces physical damage. Mind Break reduces elemental damage.

Image

The damage honestly sucks. Use them for the debuff only. Nothing else. If you're using Links, don't bother. Let someone else handle the debuffs. And no, it really doesn't use the shield's DEF to calculate damage. Unlike later games.

Power Boost

No requirements. Passive. Increases physical damage dealt.

Image

Like the wise men and women of Skyrim like to say, "Not now!". Wait until you're done with your build to invest in passives like this. As you can see, it's an SP sink if you invest in it too early and won't pay dividens until way late while investing in other skills will pay off much earlier.

Vanguard

No requirements. Has a speed modifier of +6. Increases the user's physical attack and grants them priority for 5 turns, at the cost of taking extra physical damage.

Image

If you don't want to compromise through equipment, then this skill will help Links to go first so long as any other allies don't use even faster skills than Links with priority. Landsknecht's HP and VIT do quite a bit to compensate for the extra damage taken, but be careful anyway. The DMG buff is nice though, but it's up to you whetehr or not you want to juggle buffs.

Mineralogy

No requirements. Can only spend 1 SP on this skill. When gathering at a mining spot, gain a 10% chance to find rare materials. Stacks additively with other instances. (10%+10%=20%)

Woop! You don't need to invest more than a single point in these skills anymore, and it doesn't affect the amount of times you can mine too. (Luckily or sadly).

Bandage

Heals a static amount of HP to an ally, but is only outside of battle.

Image

*Snrk!* Sorry. I can't contain my laughter. This is simply not worth any investment at any point for me. It's actually a static amount that is healed and it just isn't worth using Landsknecht's TP for healing. You'll most likely have a Medic, Dancer, items, or a combination of these on you when starting out, so it's outclassed there. Since it's static, it doesn't scale well into mid/late game. There is no good reason for Landsknecht to take this unless you do some sort of meme run, but you'll probably just use items or rush back to town by using an Ariadne Thread. That TP and SP is better spent on other skills.

Veteran (Level 20)

Double Strike

Required skills: None
Body part used: Arms
Equipment: Sword or Rapier

Deals cut/stab damage to one enemy twice.

Image

Nothing outrageous. Just your gateway skill to the sword and rapier skills. Does imbue, but it doesn’t seem to visually represent it.

Spiral Slice

Required skills: Lvl 3 Double Strike
Body part used: Arms
Equipment: Sword

Has no speed or accuracy modifier. Deals cut damage to one enemy and 50% of the damage to adjacent enemies.

Image

Have some splash damage! Mostly a better fit for randoms.

Penetrate

Required skills: Lvl 3 Double Strike
Body part used: Arms
Equipment: Rapier

Has no speed or accuracy modifier. Deal stab damage to an enemy in the front and back line. Only deals half damage to the back line, due to the back line taking half damage from melee attacks.

Image

Not really the best targeting for a melee attack, but at least it compensates with somewhat higher damage? I guess?

Iron Wall

No requirements. Passive. Decreases physical damage taken.

Image

Honestly in a much better position than Power Boost. Still, I'd rather put my points elsewhere for now..

Swordbreaker

No requirements. Passive. Grants a chance to nullify physical damage to the user's line.

Image

If you don't like RNG skills like this, you can leave it. It's still pretty good to have if you do take it anyway. Especially if you have a Fortress on that line.

Improved Link

Required skills: None
Body part used: Head

Has no speed modifier. Has a duration of 3 turns. Allows the user to perform more follow-ups. Multi-hit skills can trigger multiple follow-ups, but decreases the chance of a follow-up by 20% with every successful follow-up. Multi-hit skills only trigger a max of 4 follow-ups. This is reset whenever a new action is taken (Skills such as Sword Dance and Blade Flurry count for this reset).

Image

Take this if you use mainly Links. Especially with a Runemaster, Sniper, and/or Dancer in your party. Your damage will skyrocket. This does sadly add a turn of setup, but it's worth it.

Initiative

Required skill: Vanguard

Passively increases damage and accuracy when attacking before all enemies.

Image

If you're already investing in Vanguard, why not in this as well? You're guaranteed to go first unless an enemy somehow has priority.

Muscular Chef

Increases STR bonuses gained from food. Can only spend 1 SP on this skill. Effect stacks in a non-standard way with other instances.

Image

You can live without this, but it can be of use. Especially if you have multiple allies invest in this.

Master (Level 40)

Sword Tempest

Required skill: Lvl 3 Spiral Slice
Body part used: Arms
Equipment: Sword

Has a -20 speed modifier and a -5 accuracy modifier. Deals a lot of cut damage to one enemy.

Image

While it is slow and slightly less accurate, it makes up in power. Even then, you can easily disable evasion through leg binds, blind, panic, and paralysis.

Swift Stab

Required skills: Lvl 3 Penetrate
Body part used: Arms
Equipment: Rapier

Has a +9 speed modifier and a -15 accuracy modifier. Deals stab damage to random targets multiple times. May hit the same target multiple times.

Image

I don't like that TP cost. That is all.

Weapon Parry

Passively reduces damage taken when wielding two weapons.

Image

You know, I find this skill hilarious. The skill isn't bad. It's that holding two weapons gives better defence than armour will!

Link Mastery

Required skills: Lvl 3 Improved Link

Passively increases the Link follow-up multiplier on each consecutive Link follow-up. With both the Links and Link Mastery maxed, the follow-up will deal 50% of the initial damage on the first follow-up. 58% on the second, 66% on the third, etc.

Image

This is why Links have a follow-up multiplier mentioned in their skill table. This passive works in your favour by affecting that follow-up multiplier instead of the final follow-up damage. Let's say this passive is triggered once, adding 8% to the follow-up multiplier. While 50% of 140% is 70%, 58% of 140% is 81.2%. That's an additional 11.2% for the follow-up's damage. EO rounds decimals down, so that's 11%. If it was a regular 8% buff to the 70%, you would have gotten 75.6% instead, rounded down to 75%. By directly adding to this multiplier instead of being a stacking buff, you get a much better boost to your damage. Neat, right?
